Back Up (Imaging) Software? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I've a got a laptop whose starting to lose it's hard drive (30gb) after 4 years. I've got a replacement drive, but need to make an image of the exsisting one on a network drive, replace the laptop drive and then copy back the image.

I've looked at Acronis True Image and CMS Professional, but can't find any real live user information on the internet.

Can anyone reccomend a backup or drive imaging software solution, single user liscense, that's cheap, and will work on a W2K network?

yeah, i'm not really a symantec fan but ghost is probably their best product. i routinely make images of my drive onto an external usb drive and i can recreate the laptop drive from those images or browse the images like a zip file to retrieve 1 or more files if i need them.

that's my vote.

Norton gost is the best way to do the drive image. It is wery simply to restore everything and with 30 gig drive should not take long to restore.

Yea, I'm no fan of Symantec either, and if I recall correctly, Ghost is their best product becuase they didn't develope it in house. I think they just bought the software and stuck their name on it.

I guess Ghost it is.

Thanks!

I just did the same thing with my desktop a couple weeks ago. After copying the hard drive over, I wasn't able to get it to boot from the new hard drive. I ended up having to boot to the recovery console (with my Win 2K CD) and use the fixmbr and fixboot commands.

Hopefully you won't need to, but I thought I should let you know just in case.

I have been using Ghost for about 9 months now, and have been quite happy with it.

Good luck :-)

Guys are right about Norton Ghost, but...
Being a computer tech myself i personally would reccomend simply backing up the DATA(Documents, pics etc.) to another computer or a CD and do a clean install of the windows on your new hdd. After the system is back up and running just copy your backed up data back to the lappy and reinstall all the software that you use.

how about this..... IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH HARDWARE......

do a clean install of windows on your new hard drive.
connect your older hard drive to another port (use the CD-ROM's connection, or secondary IDE connections, (primary or slave) and then copy the required data on your new hard drive. it will save u a big hassle and keep any hidden trojans or spyware out of your new machine (as long as u know what u are copying)

PS> you might would have to configure the jumpers on the older hard drive as well.

Ok, it's done!

Bought Ghost 9.0 in a retail box for $70. There's also a $20 rebate I'll be sending in.

Took my firewire portable, external backup drive and connected it to the laptop, installed the Ghost software, set up the networking IP's and made an image over to the backup drive. Took about 45 minutes total.

Popped out the old HD, put in the new one, and booted to the recovery console in ghost, restored the image, and in 15 minutes it was done.

Rebooted the laptop and everything was smooth as silk.

Way easier that rebuilding the system from a clean install as I have way too many security (VPN's, active directory etc.) issues to try and update let alone all the service packs from all the software manufacturers.

This laptop is now close to five years old and runs like a champ again.

Totals cost, HD $175, ghost $70, (net $50), having my laptop back in less than an hour, Priceless!

Thanks everybody and consider this a BIG endorsement for Ghost.

I'm going to look into pricing for a site license for all the machines on my network.
