ESCORT Passport 8500 Install - Click HERE for Original Thread
Enforcer
I ordered a direct wire power cord from Escort without the smart-cord muting feature and a sun visor clip.
Enforcer
Install. Pull the front of the map light console down until the snaps detach then slide unit forward, down and out. Tap into the yellow wire of the map light connector and attach the ground lug to an available bolt. Route the wire with the phone plug through the front of the headliner. Helps to tape things up when your done. Also wrap the remaining cord bundle in foam to prevent rattles. There is a small "pocket" as shown for stuffing the bundle into.
Enforcer
Contents. The cord has an in-line fuse rated 2A.
Enforcer
Plug detail. Red is hot (+12V) and Green is ground.

Thanks for the detailed instructions.

I’m planning on moving up to an Escort 8500 or the likes soon.

PS: how do you lower your visor?
Enforcer
You can lower the visor just fine but then the sensors are off axis (pointing straight up and down). If you want to use the visor and detector fully all the time, then obviously this won't work. You'll have to put it elsewhere. I put mine on the passenger side which is good for 95% of my driving.

I tried this direct wire option and each time I blew the little fuse in the direct wire kit. The last time that I tried I think I blew the fuse to my interior lights. First question is what in the world can I be doing wrong to make this happen? And second, does anyone know where the fuse to the interior light is located. I checked the panal on the drivers side down by the e-brake and I checked under the hood. Could not find it anywhere. Thanks in advance for the help.

I have just purchased a Valentine One Radar Detec. and I realy like the idea Enforcer used to tap into the map light console....I know he stated to pull from the front untill it snaps but I seem to be pulling but I just dont want to take a chance on it breaking....

I have the sunroof buttons on my MO....I'm sure that does not make a diff. but....

My question to you guys are what & how did Enforcer pull that map light console without breaking it?

Many thanks in advanced!!!

Question:

Does the power to the map light circuit cut out after a certain period? That is, can I leave the detector power switch on all the time after leaving the car without having to worry about draining the battery?
Snowride
Here's another rather simple option. Works very well and the spring type power cord make it a breeze to drop into the side door pocket while remaining connected and you can also open the door. I mounted an extra twin socket to the fuse panel door and tapped into the existig fuse for the front socket with an "add a fuse". A small piece of velcro keeps the detector in place. Kinda need this setup up here because they do carry a $1000 fine if you get caught with one plus you lose the detector.

I have the Passport 8500!

Where do I get the direct wire power cord?

I need that bad!
dmako
From Passport. I've seen it on their web site.

How do I remove the map light console???...If it matters I do have the switch on the map light console for the sunroof
mattsmurano
I ordered it, I got it, I installed it! Weeeeeeeee I love it! No more hanging coil cord!

Enforcer,

If you tap into the yello is that part of the ingitiion system... meaning does your detector turn off when the car is turned off and on when the car is running?
mattsmurano
I don't remember the color. but it is the wire that supplies power to the map lights. It has "logic" built into it controller on the circuit.

This wire supplies power to the map lights when the vehicle is unlocked, and turns off 5 minutes after the ignition is switched off.

I blew the fuse to my interior lights when I went to direct wire my radar detector. Where is the fuse for these lights? I can't find it in the fuse block or under the hood.

Thanks!

Now I'm wondering. Could my blown fuse really be a blown body control module? What's this cost to replace?

Thanks,
Mark
mattsmurano
This is the instruction that I followed. It is working perfectly! I didn't blow a fuse.
MarkY
FWIW, I just followed these instructions on my 1 day old 2004 Murano. Worked like a charm.

Thanks Enforcer.
promike
Worked for me too but does not turn off. No big deal. Have had other vehicles where the unit remained on all of the time with no problem.
promike
Correction. The unit does turn off automatically but takes 30 to 60 minutes. Cool.
Eric L.
I did my install tonight using the same yellow wire. Easy as pie. Thanks for the great tip!
Murano_driver
Enforcer,

Thanks a lot for the pictures and instructions. I installed mine in 15 min. But it took me to take a screw for the ground wire most part of this time (and two cheap screw driver bits). To you :7:
Mgalin
I just pulled one of the suction cups out, stuck it to the bottom of the windshield on the far left, and pinched the + wire under pins of a fuse that was switched 12V.. takes a whole 10 mins.. (That is, if you don't care about rear laser detection)
Ground it to any screw inside the fuse box area where there isn't a painted screw.. works like a charm.
TheGymKid
Has anyone done a similiar hookup to a hotwire from the dash? I want my Magellan to stay on after the car is off. These instructions above are great for connecting a wire from the roof.

Thanks...

My wife woun't let me have an escort and now I know why.!!!!!!!!!

Gymkid - i've got a hotwire in at the fuse box for a socket to power/recharge my ipod. Pep Boys sells a "tap fuse" kit that allows you to remove a fuse from the fuse panel and plug in what looks like a dual fuse holder with a wire coming out of it. The first fuse socket in the holder is for the wire so that you now have an extra hot lead. The second fuse socket is for the original fuse you removed from the fuse box. Very neat and simple install. I connected a windshield suction cup cell phone holder with socket to the new hotwire and grounded the socket to an unpainted screw under the dash. The fuse I tapped into was for the interior lights, which stays hot even after the car is turned off. If it helps, I'll try to snap some pics and post them.

AWESOME !! Thank you... i'll look into that. Pic's would be great.

I also have to order/buy another wire for the Magellan now and I guess cut the end and splice it to hook it up.
Jim C
Gymkid - sorry for the delay in posting these, but here are the pics. This first one shows the plug in end of the unit to splice into the fusebox without cutting wires:

Here's a picture of the plug with a more neutral background:

This is a shot of the plug installed - note the way the two fuses (one for the wire and one for the original plug) are now oriented downward but still accessible:

I then snaked the wire up the side of the dash and out the A-pillar to the suction cup unit where the wire plugs into the back of the holder.

And here's one more angle of the holder with Ipod.

I use an FM Modulator called iTrip to get the sound from the iPod to the car stereo - not as good as a direct line, but it cost me a lot less.

Good luck with the install of your radar detector!
TheGymKid
Hey Jim C... THANK YOU for the great pictures. I didn't realize you updated the thread with the pictures until just now. I found an old radar dector and took that plug out, and tested it with my Magellan... it works, so I'm going to use that one with the connector wire you suggest here. I'll go today to an auto parts store to buy it.

Which is the best fuse for me to use to plug it into ?

Gymkid:

I tapped into the 10v fuse for the interior lights. Its an always-hot fuse and frankly, if it blows, I don't consider interior lights to be safety critical (like brake lamps! or brake controllers!!). Its right in the middle on the right hand side of the double row of fuses. I believe I found it by matching the position on the diagram on the underside of the fuse cover.

Great, i'll look at the diagram on the door panel and match it up.... smart choice of fuses to use.

Another question... how did you hook the plug up to the fuse addaptor? Will i need another type of connector? At the moment, I cut the end of the plug off the Magellan wire, so I have two wires hanging out, a red and white one.
Jim C
You'll need to splice the two "hot" wires together. The tap fuse plug has a red wire coming out. I used soderless connectors to splice the hot wire for the socket plug to the tap fuse plug. For the ground, I just added an "O" ring to the socket's ground wire and hooked to a screw under the dash after confirming its ground status with a multimeter.

ooo, this sounds a little more complicated now. what does a multimeter do? I assume I can buy one of those also. I just have wire the white wire to a screw somewhere so it is grounded is what your saying right.
Jim C
Yup. Just ground the white wire to some unpainted screw under the dash. A multimeter or voltmeter simply measures voltage when you apply the probes to a hot wire and a ground wire. Not a biggie. You don't really need one - but I like to measure the quality of the connection. Again, just find an unpainted screw. If it doesn't work, try a different screw. Good luck.
TheGymKid
I did it... I went to Pep Boys and bought it, sliced the wire, grounded it and ran the wire up to come out behind the instrument panel to the Magellan that sits on the dash behind the instrument panel.

I can now leave the Magellan on while the car is off, and it automatically goes off on it's own after 20 min's. A safty feature built into the Magellan.

Thank you J.C. for your assistance and teaching me how to do it. I'm a very happy camper.

1 last question... will the battery be drained at all if I leave the Magellan on for 20 min's while the car is off a few times during the day? So when I come home from work and shut the car off and leave the Magellan on... it wont kill my battery, right?
Jim C
Gymkid - it shouldn't drain your battery unless you turn on and off your car a zillion times in one day!! Even then, it shouldn't be an issue. The power draw off of your radar detector is not that great. I've left my Escort on literally overnight on my other cars and it has not caused a drainage problem. Besides the safety feature on your Magellan, you also have one in the Murano that will cut off battery power after a certain time frame as well. Just try to remember to turn off your Magellan when you leave the vehicle as its a good habit regardless. Oh, and congrats on the successful splice in.

Great post. I love the posts that make sense of do it yourself projects for dummies like me. Thanks for taking the time.
TheGymKid
I forgot, I had taken a picture of the fuse connector and wanted to post it in case anyone else went to the store looking for it. It also came with a few fuses in the box.
Enforcer
Good to see tapping into the yellow wire still works on the 06 :D.

And yes power is removed from that circuit automatically after about 20 minutes, its controlled out of the BCM power saver circuit. Then when you unlock and open the door power is applied. So you just leave it turned on and don't worry about it. It will not drain the battery.
Eric L.
Textured headliner/sunvisors on the 06 model looks great - better than the molehair on my 03.
Enforcer
BTW, the visor bracket is fabricated with simple hand tools and 1/8" x 1" aluminum bar stock available from Lowes or Ace. And it held in place during my accident. The older red LED 8500 still works fine, just dedicating it to the Z and this new blue LED one to the MO.
Enforcer
On a side note...the visor clips are different from the 03, twist and pull to remove them.
