Has anyone changed thier fog lights with PIAA Bulbs:confused:
I've changed the fog light on my Max and it was easy, since all I had to do was take the plastic protective cover under the front of the bumber. :) |

Mojomn7g,
Thanks for the info :2:
I'm going to change my bulbs this weekend.
BTW, what is the bulb size for the fogs? |
|
|
| jaak |
I put Sylvanias in the headlights (Don't have HID's boo hoo...) and it changed the colour slightly, but did not increase the light output.
Not that I'm surprised, as most of these things are standard bulbs with a blue coating to alter the output colour temperature.
If the HID kit's weren't so expensive, I'd get a couple of sets. One for the headlights and one for the fogs. Or maybe just the fogs.
Anyway, it's only 'cause I'd like them, not 'cause I need 'em! |

jaak,
Don't worry :D At the rate HID's are going on new cars, the cost of adding one, will go down dramatically. :4: |

I have found that Hoen has the best ones I have seen, I have them on my BMW and they match the HIDS perfectly. Here is there website: http://www.hoen-usa.com/
The size for our MO is 9006 in the fogs. |

Hey Speedy,
I just finished changing my fog lights to ultra white Cuzo's (best match for the HIDs). You will have to take off the front splash guard to gain access to the back of the fog light. Tip: Turn wheels away from the side that you are working on.

what i am referring to the courtesy door (kickpanel area) light pods... the front actuate when the door is ajar; the rear two are mere dummy shells, with no pre-existing wiring running to them....

| I see you guys are going nuts with the light upgrades. Does upgrading any of these bulbs with super whites produce more heat in the enclosures that might cause some plastic to melt over time. I am sure super whites look great but they probably wont look to great if the clear lenses are burnt to a brown crisp. I wanna change them all too, especially the fogs and DTR lights. |

hey gen.........
good point (an i have gone overboard b4........cracked the glass lenses on a previous vechicle, bcause the heat was soo great from the hi - watt bulbs!!)
the best way to approach this is to make sure to get the true DOT bulbs, with oem - spec output......
for the lil door kick lights, i went with APC, but ont recommend them for major bulbs (cheap stuff, imo)
i do have the 9006's in right at the moment (apc) but am putting the sylvania correct-rated white bulbs in their place asap....
and YES, the glass is warm (hot) to the touch with these overwatted bulbs... definately a bad thing!!

I have Hoens in the biz car (BMW330i) and they are awesome. Same fitment in fact, 9006, as the Murano. Originally had PIAA xtreme white and they would not fit correctly in place so did not have a change to see output.
Over on the bimmer forums they are widely regarded as the best ones for matching hid main beams. Not only that they are warranteed for a year which not even PIAA can match that.

Another thing to remember guys...
You will not get a good light output from any LED bulbs. They are very cool, however the housing for the driving lights are made for bulbs that emit light forward, side and a little behind the bulb itself. If you use LED's, as in my experience, you will not take advantage of the reflective material behind the bulb.
And remember, you will have to try different brands out as my HID's on my MO are not as Blue as my friend's MO. So the bulbs I recommend may not be an exact match for your HID's.
Gator... I bought these from a local performance shop, but check out your local Circuit City now... they are carrying aftermarket lights now... and their return policy is great! Try those out first, and if you don't like them, take 'em back. Just don't destroy the box. And say you didn't like the color.
Have fun with you Mo's guys.... I just finished match tinting my front windows. I'm pretty excited about it. Just waiting for a solution to come out on the Aux Line In situation for my portable audio ; )
Take care,

i tried the APC 80 wattage ones, but they made the glass almost glowing hot... (the hoens still make the glass hot to the touch, at 51W)......
i think the reason the parking (daytime runners in other areas) are the color they are is due to DOT specs elsewhere..... (my moms rx is that way..... ima get the brown out for her this christmas.....man, that sounded aweful.,........ sorry!!)

| I just want to clarify something here. It has been said that the bulb needed for the fogs is a 9006 or H3. The H3 portion is not correct and should have been a HB4. The H3 bulb is completely different and not compatible anywhere on the MO. This is what an H3 looks like. http://www.piaa.com/Bulbs/Bulbs-H3.html and this is what a 9006 also known as a HB4 looks like.(third one down) http://www.piaa.com/Bulbs/Bulbs-9000.html Best way to avoid any confusion is to refer to it as a 9006. |

| Found something I believe to be different on the Canadian models since nobody mentioned what a pain and how very little room there is when installing the passenger side fog light bulb. I have seen this before on other vehicles where the windshield washer fluid container is much larger on the Canadian models than the US ones. It reaches down and blocks access to the bulb from the back side and you need to tackle it from underneath by separating the front skirt along with the wheel well protection panel and squeeze your fingers from below, up between the washer bottle and the fog light. No more than 1 1/2" clearance. A real pita but on the bright side, I think the Canadian washer fluid bottle holds 100 gallons :D |
|
|
| ekaxel |
| Passenger side fog is a pain in the US model too. US washer bottle is probably the same-completely blocks the back of the fog. Took about 3 times as long, and had to loosen the bumper cover. IMHO, the fogs are ineffective.. When the low beam (HID) are on, turning in the fogs does nothing. I have my fogs modified to use as DRL (like the Canadian version). |
|

| ekaxel, how did you modify your fogs to use as DRL's. I would like to do this also. |

I don't want to run my HIDs all day as DRL's but would like to have just the fogs on. Was told by dealer it was some sort of law, but then I see non-HID MO's out there running just the fogs and not the headlights. Even if I were to use the fogs for their intended purpose, it wouldn't make any sense to have the HID's on since they would just cause a blinding fog wall. Any options or thoughts on this? |

I was able to do this on my Maxima. I basically tapped into the fuse box in the engine bay so that the fog lights had power whenever I had my parking lights on (as opposed to only having power when the headlights were on). So now I can turn on my parking lights and turn on/off my fogs. I guess it helps me be seen better, but I personally just like how it looks.
As a side note, I really don't consider these to be 'fog' lights, they are really just driving lights. True fog lights are yellow in output as it is not as reflective as white, to cut through the fog. |

I just took out the sylvania Silverstars from my FOGS, 9006ST color temp 4000K at most, went to Hyper White 4200K from American Auto they are out now also What it takes to match the Osram Sylvania HID headlights, What comes with the MO from the factory, is at least a 4500K color temp but really 5000K would be better, Higher up in the 6000 to 7000k IS TOO violet. Funny you should mention fog lights and PIAA bulbs, I just finished dealing with that exact fiasco as we speak!
I changed ALL the bulbs in my MO to PIAA Extreme White Plus. (Including all the interior dome lights, door lights, daytime running, this is one WORTHWHILE upgrade. Compare an original bulb in one map light and a PIAA in the other and you will be amazed. But I digress...!)
When I swapped out the original Sylvania 9006 foglight bulbs I found the new PIAA's I had wouldn't fit. After a lot of cursing and arm cramping I put the bulbs side by side and found that the overall length of the PIAA's is different (longer) and the refective cap in the foglight prevented them from being inserted all the way (the seat on the bulb is also longer). I emailed the tech people at PIAA and they confirmed that their bulbs aren't always 100% compatible in every situation and told me to return them where I bought them for a full refund. When I tried this the supplier told me there was no returning electrical components (in most cases this makes sense to me) and I had a big ordeal trying to get PIAA and the supplier to come to an agreement. It all worked out in the end, except for the fact that I'm now back to stock bulbs.
I see the Sylvania Silverstars and the PIAA Extreme White Plus bulbs are each 4000K, so I'm wondering if they will be a close enough match to look good with the PIAA's in the running lights above. Anybody know?
Mo YA!

I have done it about 10 times now and it take me just minutes. As a number of posts of of other have pointed out the bolt that hold the fog lamp assembly in place is on the top of its housing.
I use a small (but not unusually so) rachet with about a 3" extension. I remove the front (front) mud flap and pull back the inner cover like you have done.
Non reach into THE SPACE ABOVE THE WASHER CONTAINER AND JUST BELOW THE HEADLIGHT HOUSING AND YOU WILL HAVE YOUR HAND RIGHT ON THE TOP OF THE FOG LAMP HOUSING, TOUCH THE HOLDING BOLT FOR LOCATION AND THEN BUT THE SOCKET on it , TURN AN, VOLIA! THE FOG LAMP IS LOOSE. NOW PRESS ON THE LAMP CONNECTOR TO PUSH THE LAMP LOOSE AND IT WILL FALL OUT THE FRONT (CAREFULL DON'T LET IT HIT THE GARAGE FLOOR)

Thanks again Gripper, just a question though - Is it necessary to pop the whole light assembly out? I was able to simply swap out the bulb on the driver side without having to do this (or is it required because of the tighter fit on the other side?).
Another question you maybe can help me out with (especially if you have the service manual). How do you get at the reverse and rear license plate bulbs? Do you remove the inner liner on the rear hatch and get at them from the inside (I really can't imagine it would be that difficult) or do the lenses pry/popoff in some way that I haven't tried yet?
Thanks for the info...
TenSpeed |
|
|
| GripperDon |
No you may not have to remove the complet lamp assembly. I did beacuse the bulb holder was so tightly clamped that it was much easier to remove the lamp that way. I also took the time to connect up a extra wire to the fog lamp hot side as I have been making a driver selectable fog lamp DTRL system that can run the fogs all the time the ignition is on or have the fog lamp act normally using the MO's computer control.
I hooked to the hot lead of the backup lamps bye just opening the small cover that is on the inside of the hatch right behind the license plate. Pop test, cut, splice and you are done, no liner to remove. This is also where I put my rear view camera stuff.

YES PM MOpar he is THE expert on parking bulbs. I have a set of 6 point led that I got from Superbright that are a perfect match for the HID's and bright than the stock bulbs.
MOpar knows the number of the ones I have. However has tried a number of type including some that are bright enough to be headlamps. I think he has Amber leds currently. If he doesn't know my number I'll rummage around and find my old order. |

Centurion tried PIAA 168 Xtreme Whites. but he agreed that bright white parking lights looked to much like second headlights to on comming traffic.
Grip's WLED-W6 leds from superbrightleds.com have a good color match but not very bright.
I installed WLED-A6 leds (amber but showed yellow ) nice color, not bright enough. Found JamStrait.com Hyper-Bright Amber LEDs in
AutoZone good yellow, brighter than superbrights, not bright enough yet. Installed PIAA Plasma Ion 5 watts 168's, good brightness probably the best I am going to get in yellow, I like yellow parking. I found some 921NA 18 watts( natural amber glass ) Blazer brand in AutoZone, bright but not sure about extra heat from 18 watts.
I also tried clear
923 11 watts
921 18 watts, bright but not HID color.

Mopar,
Did you happen to get pics of any of these?
Wow, you sure did try a lot. |

| Pictures of the lights haven't come out too good before, I will try again. |

I'm going to try the Hoen's for the fog lights and mains. However the only 9007 available is the zenonmatch plus 80/100w. I e-mailed Hoen with my concerns about the higher wattage and they suggested a heavy duty wiring harness.
Is anyone running this wattage currently....opinions? |

| The fogs are 9006, so far stock wattage but xenon bulbs. |

Yeah, no worries with the fogs, my concern is with the headlights.
MOpar, are you running HID's or upgraded aftermarket bulbs? |

im kinda having the same troubles as Trev
i was checking the local area for lights, and i found only two brands
Eaglite
Osram
now Osram is German quality and should be pretty g00d
my concerns are that they come in 90/100 Watt bulbs (for the 9006 fog lights and the 168/H7 parking lights).. i asked the guy at the shop that i should be buying it at 55 Watts, and even decreasing it to 51W like u guyz have been discussing..
he tells me that the car would Fix the Watt power on its own ?
i was like wtf? (excuse my language)
at 100 Watt it would definitly melt the glass as well if im correct ..
wut do you guyz suggest? i think the best thing is to go and buy myself sum online.. im gonna email Hoen, PIAA and see if they can send to my country.. |

It might get warm but I doubt it would melt the glass... If anything, I'd worry more about the wiring harness, but even that's likely to be OK, if the fuse doesn't cook and blow after a while.
The parking lights, actually are glass with metal reflectors, unlike the headlights. |
