new leather question - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi~ I have a new 05 MO w/ Leather that I bought last week. Should I do anything to condition/protect the leather right away or should there be a breakin period before I go slopping goo all over it?
dmako
I don't think it hurts to condition the leather.

Remember the time the car was made, stored, shipped, stored, show the elements have been at the leather.

i'd go ahead and condition it right away. at the detail shop, the leather conditioning is part of our protection package and the only thing it can do for the leather is moisturize it and make it more supple.
MO in TO
Just make sure to stick with quality names likes Mothers or Meguiars........and be prepared for slippery seats for a few days as the leather will absorb what it needs, and the rest may need to be rebuffed with a dry soft cloth a day or two later.:2:

will at my auto detailing job i came across a product made by Auto Glym. they make really awesome leather conditioner. we were conditoning the leather on a QX56 the other day and in an hour, all the conditioner was fully absorbed. talk about thirsty leather.

I've had good success using a leather "creme" conditioner called Lexol I think. Purchased it from Costco a few years ago and it comes with a bottle of glycerin based cleaner and the "creme" conditioner. I use it every few months.

I also bought some Armor All Leather Conditioning Cloths. I know a lot of people here don't like Armor All, but honestly I've been using their products for 15 years now and never once had a problem with it.

I've been using Lexol on an Audi A4 and will be using it on the 05' MO from now on. I apply the pH cleaner first followed by the leather conditioner. Works great

thanks for the great info, all. First car w/ leather so I want to make sure it lasts a looong time.

I love this stuff http://www.leatherique.com/

Both the Pristine cleaner and the rejuvenator oil

Frank came by a few days ago to get the free air deflector and commented a couple of time as to how soft my leather was.

i've herd about that stuff but also herd that it's kind of expensive

I have been using Lexol for many years. I was first turned on to it by the detailer when I purchased my wifes C320 and have never looked back.

The cleaner and conditioner make for quick work. The best part is we don't slide off the seats onto the floor when she hits the brakes.

Whatever you choose, (there are other great products on the market) make sure it is Ph Neutral and had sunblock.

The other thing I use that is the Cats Meow is a California Duster. With one wipe it takes all the "White Specks" Off the black leather. Its worth every penny of the $9.99 it costs now. I have had mine for 5 years and its still like new.

I have used them "ALL" and I literally mean that and in this case I got what I paid for!

grip if it's good enough for you then i guess i might just have to try it out to soften up the leather. do you do the massage hand application as suggested on the website??

I bought the "Pristine" If you ask a bunch of questions about the "rejunivator oil" and comment about the price she will GIVE you a sample bottle for free.

I put it on with my hand in a slip-on rubber latex glove, ONLY to make the oil go further, not to protect my hand. It is great stuff, Also for leather furiniture in the home.

Well, I just tossed them $45.00 for a set of products. Im hoping its as good as you / they say it is.

How long did you let it sit on the MO?
Did you turn on the seat heaters?
FastEddy
I received it in the mail yesterday and applied it to my front passenger seat around 11am and let it sit in the sun till around 5pm. It soaked in and did its thing. I followed up with the cleaner and let it set over night.

I cant say that its any softer then it was when I started but it added a great shine to the black leather. I followed up the rear seating last night and it seemed to soak in well even with the cool night temps. Ill let it set in the sun all day today and clean it this evening. Maybe the longer time will help to soften it up.

I am totally impressed with the cleaner product. I used it on all the inside plastic and leather (excluding the dash for now.) It gives the black interior a great wet look. Time will tell how long the look will last and how much dirt it will attract but it sure looks good. Once Im satisfied with the performance I will do the dash.

Thanks for turning me on to this product. Its at least as good as what I was using and may be better. If nothing else, The cleaner was worth the cost.
hfelknor
I had the same experience.
It worked OK at cleaning and conditioning .....but hardly worth the cost....in this case Zaino is just as good (and smells better) and is cheaper. Cheaper is a bit unusual for Zaino.

It did nothing for "softness".

I think a more fair test would be on 10 year old hard leather. It might work better there.

Anyway I have enough for the life of the car now , and it works fine.

I'm convinced to try Lexol products on my leather.

Do you guys buy the wipes and use those or the spray?

Any tips on applying?
FastEddy
Till now I have used Lexol exclusively and have no issues with it. Im always looking for something better so thought I would try this other stuff.

I use the spray bottles. Most people will just spray it on and wipe it off with a soft towel. I like to spray on a genouris amount of the conditioner and hand rub it into the leather paying special attention to the seams. Ill let it absorb into the leather for as long as it take me to do the rest of the car then a quarter of football or NASCAR. Ill then use an absorbent cloth (Yellow MicroFiber Towels from Costco) to wipe and buff the seats off. I only use the cleaner if I happen to get a spill or spot that needs cleaning.

My wife isn't as anal as I am and gives the wipes to the guys at the car wash to use when she gets her car washed. They don't like to do it but a $5.00 tip helps them get over it. She does this 2 times a month or so.

I was originally turned onto Lexol from the Mercedes dealer. Its the recommended product from their service department.

Thanks for the warning. The last thing I want is shiny leather and the wet look for the interior.

I have leather and don't find the leather hard at all but more glove like.

I like Lexol products. I've been using them for 7 years with great results.
GripperDon
I have used Lexol, and others and they were fine. I liked the Rejuvenate and Pristine combo the best I didn't get a shine ( I hate Shine) But I love luster and suppleness. That is what I got, Hope you get better results as it soaks in over the weeks.

If not, Toss it out, Chach it up to experience and go with something else, (I will always take it if you really want to toss it out by the way :) ) Be happy to send you my Lexol in exchange.

we dont have as great a range of choice here in australia. we do have meguiars and mothers though.

is the meguiars gold class leather cleaner/conditioner foam any good? is there any problems with it being a combined product? I cant seem to find a seperate cleaner and conditioner.

I have exclusively used meguiars products for years. has anyone tried their leather cleaner range? this is my first leather interior and i want to look after it.

On my 2006 Mo (produced Oct. 5, 06, charcoal leather), I have applied the Meguiars Gold Class leather cleaner/conditioner that is a heavy cream/lotion. Applied 2 coats and it seemed to absorb right in and left no gloss (I like the flat finish better). It left no scent. There are a few wrinkles/waves in my front seats; it did not eliminate them.

I am confused by Zaino and Lexol. Are these the same products? Do they leave a gloss? I would prefer the one that left no gloss.

Any help would be appreciated.

I applied the Meguiars Gold Class foam and it left a terrible gloss. I might need to try the lotion but I am hesitant because of what the foam did.
RickM46
Bigdongers,
I used the Meguiars heavy lotion on mine and it left no gloss. I used a cotton cloth (actually from a package of diapers that I bought at the local auto parts store, Murrays - a chain in Mich and Ohio) to apply it. I applied one coat and let it soak in for 15 minutes; then, applied another coat and let it soak in for 15 minutes; then buffed with another clean diaper. Even though I applied it thick, it soaked in with very little left to buff off. I applied it to all surfaces of the seats including the vinyl parts. No gloss.

I will get the exact name from the Meguiars container and let you know the name. The lotion has a creamy color and is so thick that you have to shake the container a bit to get it out. It says on the container that the lotion leaves no gloss. Before I bought it, I squeezed a bit out on my fingers to examine the lotion - no smell, no oily residue, has aloe as a component.

I noticed that there were other Meguiars leather treatments on the shelf but they were in a spray container and were a very thin liquid - I figured the lotion would be better.

OK, here is the Meguiars product that I used:
Meguiars Gold Class Rich Leather Cleaner/Conditioner.
It is in a black plastic bottle and is a heavy lotion.
It states on the labels that it has aloe and nutrients and UV Protection and leaves no gloss.

Thanks Rick.

It sounds like its the same as the foam. The foam did leave a gloss though..

When I first applied the foam, the seats went really wet and didnt seem to absorb it. I left the car in the sun for a few hours and then tried to wipe off the excess without too much success.

What was yours like when you applied the lotion? was it easy to wipe off? After wiping was the seat looking like it was before or still a bit "wet"
RickM46
Bigdongers,
The product is quite thick, has a cream color. I applied it liberally with a cotton cloth. At first, the leather appeared wet but as it was being absorbed, it began to dry. While drying, it had a bit of a gloss; however, after about 15 minutes, I used another cotton cloth to buff the seats and the gloss went away. The seats have their original flat black-no shine look. There was very little residue on the cloth. The temp here in Cleveland was about 40 F at that time. I am satisfied with the product; the main reason I bought it was: aloe, UV protection, no gloss. It states on the back label that there would be no gloss.

I am debating whether to switch to Zaino or Lexol or Leatherique.
Hope this helps.

I purchased a bottle of Meguiars Gold Class leather lotion too, and applied it to my seats today. I used a fine cotton polishing cloth, and the meguiars applies easily and leaves absolutely no shine at all. In fact, I was wondering whether it was soaking into the cloth and not into the leather, since I did not see the "wet" look I am accustomed to seeing when applying interior detailing products. I'll let it sit overnight and see if I can feel the difference tomorrow (I certainly can't see it).

Previously I have used Lexol in other vehicles and it left a nice glossy shine on the seats which faded slowly as it dried over a few hours.

I admit I like my leather to have a bit of a shine, I guess you would call it lustre instead of shine, but the Meguiars doesn't leave that look.

It did leave a bit of a fresh pine scent though.
