Pictures of the 2006 Murano are now out and posted on the Nissan News website!
2006 Murano
I'll post three of them here. The first one shows the "redesigned" front grill. Frankly, the redesign looks pretty minimal to me. It looks like they just added a few more "teeth" to the grin. Personally, I like the design of the grill, but I was kinda looking forward to a more dramatic change.

The next picture is of the back of the car, showing the LED tail lights and a rear bumper protector...maybe it will be standard now.
And finally a shot of the interior, showing the instrument cluster. You can't see it in this picture, but another shot on the website shows the head unit more closely with "MP3" clearly labeled on it. What I don't see is a SAT button. What happened to the SAT button???

Thanks for the update.
The changes are subtle at best. Even the current owners will have to look twice except for wheels which are nice. |
|
|
| nissanlove |
| ehh i thought the wheels would be better but there not. NISSAN THE MO NEEDS 20's!!!!!!! i like the new grill and the guages look awesome. and the aluminum bumper step pad is sweet. the led tails could be better. not impressive enough to trade in. maybe i'll get the step pad. dosn't look like the tails are retrofitable. notice that there is a wireless sat antenna in the middle of the roof. pretty cool. |

Nice find! Been very anxious to see what's up.
A few initial impressions:
-- Not in love with the wheels. At all. Maybe the SL wheels will be cooler. I prefer both current wheel designs to this new one.
-- That barely qualifies as a grill "redesign". I was thinking of something more dramatic as well.
-- Don't like the little lip on the bumper around the fog lamps, the current bumper is cleaner and looks better. I do kinda like the chrome rings tho...this one's a wash.
-- Can't quite tell what color the gauge faces are with the lights being on in the photos. I've never been a fan of the orange faces, so this looks pretty cool.
-- LED tails...hmm, I dunno, I'm not blown away, I guess I need to see 'em in person.
-- Like the rear bumper protector.
-- Chrome lower front bumper and rocker bars don't look too obnoxious, have to see them in person and on a darker color to be sure. That front bumper had me worried, coming from the company that put those horrible chrome pieces on the Titan's front bumper...but this seems alright.
Now we need package and pricing info, and info on the new colors and interior/exterior color combos. Still hoping for Glacier Pearl with the Charcoal interior... |

| The gauges are very similar to the Infiniti's with amber numerals on a dark background. The new grill is very similar but I think an improvement. The new wheels are similar to the Infiniti's wheels. |

That was what I was thinking. Pretty minor changes overall though. Thanks TexinFla for posting the pics! |

I also notice the new rear bumper protector (it does look nicer) and the chromed side rail runners beneath the doors (kind of guady). The chrome rings around the front fogs look like they came off an Altima and they added some odd looking metallic looking "rings" around the climate control dials.
At first glance the new guages look nice but the large letters on the fuel and temp guages look out of proportion with the rest of the dash. |

Well, I sure won't be looking to trade in my '05 MO for an '06.
The only change that I like on the '06 is the switch to LED tail lights.
I like the look of the gauges and the chrome wheels on my '05 a LOT better than the new ones on the '06's. |

A satellite radio antenna. |

| Is it just me or does the grille appear to be a gunmetal color similar to Mo in To's wheel mod. Maybe it is just the lighting. |
|
|
| TheGymKid |
| I believe that color is a light gray... also new for the Murano I assume. |
|

Well, the grill changes are very subtle, but I definitely like it better than the previous one. Looks a little less like a clown smile. Still prefer my stainless Z style though.
Love the instrument cluster! If someone successfully does a switch-over, I might consider it as well.
The LED lights seem very weird. I don't like how pronounced the little dots are. Have to see in person. And I wish that they would put yellow turn signals for the rear. Always has been a pet peeve of mine.
I don't care too much about wheels, but having just rotated mine for the first time last night (SL) and realizing how much of a pain it is to have the recessed lug nuts (both for removal, installation, and cleaning) it looks like these are easier. |
|
|
| elliotgb |
Most likely only subtle changes until a major redesign somewhere in 2008. They'll keep tweaking here and there and adding a few new bells and whistles, but no structural changes for a while.
I do like the instrumentation and lighting. |
|
|
| Gonzo |
I like the changes. Note the area around the fogs... a change there a little nicer and the bottom of bumper slight changes too. Nice.
Over all a big thumbs up for Nissan.
Now the question is.... will that frount grill fit 03-05 models and how much in that incstrument cluster? I bet it would be fairly easy to swap it out. |

The gunmetal colour was seen on the Japanese Murano, if I recall correctly, so it exists. It may be on this one too, or maybe they put it on certain colours, just like painting the "skid plate" on certain colours and not others.
Looking at the pictures is like playing "Where's Waldo"...
I'm sure I've missed things, and most of them have been identified above, but to make it a bit easier....
The Front:
- Aluminum roof rack (Looks good on the silver, not sure I would want it on the Copper)
- Tweak of the grill styling softens the style a little. I like it, but I also like the existing one.
- Metal ring around the fog light (Easy upgrade, especially for those that have had theirs broken. I've had rocks smash two, so far...)
- I like the wheels, and they look like they may be a bit cheaper to make, as they don't have the large center cover of the previous SE wheels
- Metal accent on lower grill opening and sides. (I don't dislike them, but I like it better without.) Again, depends on the look you like and the colour, if they're good or bad.
The Rear:
- Sat antenna is body coloured. Helps it blend in better. Did they poke a hole for the antenna wire?
- LED Taillights. I'm curious to see them closer and on. I like the look of the original one a little bit better, but I'm sure the LED's look good.
- Aluminum bumper guard. I'm sure it will scrape up, just like the one inside, but it links in with the styling of the inside one, better.
Interior:
- Aluminum cover on bottom part of shift knob is a bit different.
- Door handles are Chrome. (I've seen Nissan do this before with other models, once they were 2-3 years old.)
Instruments:
- Same instruments, but blacked out the entire face instead of just bottom part, and added silver ring around the edge with rpm and speed markings.
There's a fair bit of reflected light off the faces in this picture, so they don't look as black as I suspect they are. This is great for those that hate the mostly orange instruments. I actually like the orange better, but that's such a personal preference thing, there is no right or wrong. No doubt, these look great too!
Radio Pod:
- They've moved radio functions around, to add things as well as make it more intuitive (I suspect).
- RADIO button will select AM/FM/SAT so no SAT button needed. It also removes SAT from the buttons so the sales people don't have to make up explanations for those that don't have/want the SAT function.
- Where's the "MUTE/PAUSE gone?
- Functions added for MP3 navigation (FOLDER)
- DISP button instead of pushing the audio button. I would expect that the RDS implementation is better and this will help select what you see in FM, as well as SAT modes.
- Chrome accent on joystick and climate controls
Here's the previous version of the radio:
This is in line with what Nissan normally seems to do. Once a model is 2-3 years old, they often do a bit of a facelift, without really changing the underlying vehicle in any drastic way.
Just enough tweaks to get your curiousity and hopefully push new buyers into the new model, instead of picking up a deal on the previous year.
Only thing here that jumps out at me, would be better RDS implementation (if they have indeed done this) and MP3 capabilities. Oh and I'll take the colour display, of course!!! |
|
|
| Nissmo |
From the closeups it does not look like the MP3 capability is any more than being able to read them off discs.
No 2.5mm jack that would be really nice for players. |
|
|
| Zooropa |
The aluminum bumper guard is gonna get scratched and dinged to death. A factory installed plactic version would have been a better choice.
I have always been a fan of the brushed aluminum accents on the interior and am sad to see them chrome the hack out of the Mo. It looks cheap and shows fingerprints.
Lighted steering wheel controls are a great addition. I was trying to use cruise control (something I rarely use because of traffic) on I-5 in the dark and I had to keep turning on the overhead light to see which button was accel/set/resume etc. |
|
|
| mozman |
Jaak - Great post on illustrating the changes. I was about to note some not mentioned earlier, but you got them all.
I agree with most people that overall the changes are ho hum. A few things are eye-catching. I'll look forward to the complete redesign in the next 2-3 years... that will hopefully cause a bigger stir. |
|
|
| hasaanbhutta |
what about iPOD integration?????
i thought it was coming through in 06 models. (at least its there in Japan)
anyways,.... not MUCH impressed with these little tweaks by nissan but it sure refreshes the MO for any future buyer who might not consider CVT as a big factor.
i will still stay put with my 03 till a major redesign..... |
|
|
| Gonzo |
| As someone metioned... where is the sat button? I would also bet that the new "display" button does the same thing as the exiting funtion just on a dedicated button to be more intuitive. Just a SWAG. |
|
|
| rjardine |
I'm OK with the existing instrument cluster, but the '06 is that much better. I would think it is a reasonably easy retrofit so long as the odometer info is stored in one of the OBCs and not the cluster.
Similarly the rear lights look good for a retro fit. May just have to start looking at Ebay for items like this once the '06 has been available for while. |

Just to clarify that point, I don't know it for a fact, it's my "edumacated" guess.
But considering how the steering wheel control toggles through sources and the old button, er sorry, the original design, toggles between AM & FM, then it's logical to just throw SAT in with that function. If you don't have it, no change to your operation, and if you do, just one more press.
If I was a bettin' man, I would put money on it. |

Neat post! Thanks for pointing out all of those changes. I do like the new instrumentaion and the chrome handles. I'd miss the radio mute button, however. |

I'd miss mute/pause as well -- but I'd gladly give it up to get MP3 ability.
Can't wait to see if it's going to be an simple/difficult/impossible swap... |
|

I figure they've put it in there somewhere, but not consumed a whole button with it. Hopefully it's sharing duties with something else...
Hey, maybe they've finally stuffed in the parts for the phone to mute it! (I can always hope, right?) The circuit exists, they just didn't put in the parts in the circuit board to enable it. |

Doubt it will work since its not compatible with the display screen (unless that is changed too). |

By the time you buy all those stock parts, you could get a killer aftermarket custom setup for less money. |

Why do you assume it has a new interface as opposed to just utilizing the interface that already existed on the '03-'05 color screen? I know it's possible that it may have a new interface, but I wouldn't automatically assume that. Even in the '03 - '05 models the radio clearly has the ability to display text or whatever else it needs on the color screen...that's really all it would need to show the MP3 info. No? |

There is another thread discussing installation of the LCD display. I believe it was determined that the orange info screen and the LCD display have different display control units. |

Right -- I never said anything about the amber screen, I wouldn't assume that would be the same. But like I said, wouldn't it be possible that the new stereo uses the same interface with the color screen as the old stereo did? |

Some of us with 03-05 have the orange LED screen. |

| Do you think that the ring around the fog lights will allow easier removal to replace the bulb instead of having to removing the fender cover as we do now? |
|
|
| jaak |
It's likely the fog lights are exactly the same and the ring is just some trim put in front of it. (They use the same fog lights on other models, like the Altima, etc.)
So my guess would be.... No.
Hopefully the newer models with the colour display will display more than one thing at a time. Currently, the orange LCD will show you Channel, Artist and Title at the same time and the colour display only allows you to pick one of those. Step forward in bling, step backward in function, for that part of it. (I'd take the bling, given a choice, but I have colour LCD envy...)
:p |
|
|
| samwlee |
So the color LCD only shows one line of info? I always thought it would show channel, title, artist and a whole bunch of other info...
What I really would love is the standard backup camera.. after 10 months, I still have issues estimating the rear of my car when I park.. |

There is an interior picture showing what I believe to be hazelnut. It looks really nice. Also the SE wheels are called sport styled and the SL wheels are called luxury styled but I found no pictures of the two styles. |

Hmmmnnnnnn.
There is a reason that most people like 5 spokes.
Homer |
|
|
| Eric L. |
| So all Muranos will have the six spokes now. Ah man, I liked my SE six-shooters because it distinguished my vehicle from the other SL's out there (that seem to make up 95% of the Muranos I see on the road). Now that they all look the same, it kind of makes the SE less special. Drivers of other SE's will understand what I mean (and the SL owners here will just think I'm imagining things). |

Yup, the SE's have had it since '04 and any Murano can have it if you change the shift mechanism.
I've made my October 2002 built '03 SL do it. It's been there in the transmission right from day one... |

My thoughts exactly. I'll bet those of us with factory Nav on older models are just a swapout away from a 2006 head unit and 4GB MP3 player. That would add *years* to how long I plan on keeping the car. I recently mentioned having a 6-disc in-dash MP3 CD player in a rented Ford Freestyle for 6 weeks, and it made a world of difference. It was actually depressing to get back in the Murano after having the Freestyle for so long (maybe it was just having the customer pay for my gas :4: ).
I had something like 70 hours of music at the ready, which came in handy during my 4 hour commutes on Mondays and Fridays. All that's missing are trippy visualizations in hardware ;) |

Got a look at the sales training brochure on "what's new" for the 06 Murano. It mentions all the changes we've seen here and a few more. The LCD screen is touted as a new 7.5" color LCD. Saw a review on the older color ones that said they were hard to read, but can't find the link now that I want to. The passenger airbag switch is automatic now like other Nissans, depends on weight of occupant in passenger seat. The steering wheel buttons are now illuminated. The center console is new unless you order the rear DVD player then it will come with the old console. Yes the color LCD is now standard on all models and the rear view monitor is standard on SL and SE. SE loses FWD option, all SE are now AWD. The Navi has several updates and I dont remember them all. If I can I'll try to get copies of the docs and post them.
Edit. Heres the Link:
http://reviews.cnet.com/2005_Nissan...7-31352139.html
And no, the bluetooth wasn't added to the '06s either.
Oh yeah and rear cup holders are now in the rear seat center arm rest instead of in the bottom rear of the center console.
And the SAT button is the radio button AM-FM-SAT. should have users manual link on knowledge base page soon. |

I was in Sandarms '06 SL Murano (Thanks!) and took it for a spin around the block.
After the '03 here's my reaction to it.
Like the chrome door handles.
Like the change in the headliner material and the covering of the hard plastic pillars.
Like the changes in the radio controls, but miss the Mute/Pause button.
Love the colour display!!!!!!
Love the back up camera!!!!
Arm rest is different. Likely more practical than the older storage compartment, but reduced storage capability.
Love the new instrument cluster. It looks fabulous in real life and it's flipped me from the orange. It's much classier looking.
Drives the same... Always loved the CVT.
Like the new wheels. Sandarm now has both new and old! (I sold him mine.)
Didn't even think to look at the grill.
I should have looked at the taillights when they were on. I'm curious to know how they'll look at night, but I'm sure I'll see one eventually.
Now, I caught myself waving to a guy with a nice Murano last week. Habit. He had this puzzled look on his face and I burst out laughing when I realised what I did. I'm sure he was thinking "Do I know that guy? Why would a guy in a Magnum wave at me? This is weird!"
Wait 'till I put the nissanmurano.org sticker on it. |

Gentlemen,
I took a close look at the 2006 Murano for the first time today - sat in a newly delivered one to my dealer - black, FWD, touring package.
As per the other observations already on this website, most of the changes are great as compared to my 2004 Murano.
A few things I did not like were the:
smaller chromed knobs for temp and fan control and
the way the center console opens; but these can be lived with.
But the worst was the brightness of the lights behind the guages during headlights off time. To me their brightness is distracting. You can't regulate the brightness of the guages during daytime running; but, they can be regulated once the parking lights or headlights come on.
I looked at the system settings and didn't see any way to deal with the above; anyone notice the same thing?
However, if I had to be an 06, I would anyway.

Hey guys and gals, this is my first post on NM.org, but I am a longtime nissanclub.com/altimas.net member and own a 2003 Altima 3.5SE.
On monday I leased a Sunset Red 06 Murano SL w/ Touring for my wife to give her something with better winter traction yet be a bit more frugal on fuel than your run of the mill V8 SUV. While we haven't had any snow yet, and so far the jury is out on the fuel savings, we are both thoroughly impressed with the 06. We test drove an 05 and loved that as well, but the little details on the 06' made us commit to picking up the latest and greatest version.
I specifically like the new gauges and the color screen. Compared to the standard info monitor on the 03-05s, the color display is just beautiful. It's intuitive to use, has a great graphical interface, and looks awesome. I have never seen an 03-05 display in sunlight, but I would rate the color version as a 7 out of 10 under direct glare. It looses it's crispness, but it does not wash out entirely and is still very usable. During the day when the sun is not directly on it, it is great.
The chrome accents are a nice touch, but as we all know they show fingerprints and smudges, so you trade something for them. The aluminum bumper guard looks great back there, but I'm paranoid of what it will look like 6 months or a year from now as my experience with brushed aluminum is that it scratches easily.
The tailights are fine, but instead of seperating the LEDs into little pods I would have liked to have seen a uniform array similar to the original LED lights that Cadillac put on the DTS a few years back. I haven't seen them in action, but they look good in parking light mode.
The backup camera is just awesome... I'm already thinking of ways to put one into my Altima... granted I can actually see out of that car, whereas the traditional nissan high beltline and the murano's tints definitely limit vision to the rear and cause some pretty good blind spots that I don't have on the Altima.
All in all, I couldn't be happier with this Murano. My wife and I have loved them since they came out, and now that we're able to drive our own I'm very pleased. Of course my true love is my Altima, but I definitely don't mind having a second VQ in the garage.

True that! It also rides smoother and doesn't scrape everywhere like my lowered version does. It also weighs 800 pounds more. |

Just watch the transmission scoop and the resonator in the exhaust system!
I laughed when Nissan said the Murano was based on the Altima's platform. After all, the VQ engine must be used in at least half of Nissan/Infiniti vehicles. The transmission is not the same. The Altima is not AWD, the Murano's brakes wouldn't fit in the Altima if you wanted them to, the wheels are completely different, the body's different, the interior's different, the exhaust system is different, and so on... But it's based on the Altima.

Marketing departments. Can't live with them, can't live without them.
Jaak, i think the reason why they emphasized the fact that a murano is based on the Altima platform is to make sure the idea of a 'crossover' suv accepted.
They want potential buyers to think: cross over = hybrid between a car-like drive feeling (instead of truck) but has the height/carrying capacity of a typical SUV....Just my 2 cents:4: |

Gentlemen,
I have just traded in my 2004 Murano S - FWD, Black, Sunroof Package, black cloth for a new 2006 Murano SL - FWD, Brilliant Silver, touring package, charcole leather and am not looking back. The new one is great!!
I wasn't nuts about the exterior chrome trim on the bumpers and rocker panels and fog lights; but, the first time I saw a brilliant silver 06, you didn't notice the chrome trim; that did it; that turned me to the 06.
My buying experience was tremendous. My dealer (North Coast Nissan) didn't have the 06 that I wanted but found one 80 miles away at another dealership. A trade was done. I got to drive a red 06 Murano to that dealership and pick up my silver 06 and drive it back. It was still in its shipping packaging (white plastic sheets on the outside, plastic bags over everything on the inside) when I first saw it. What a rush!
So far, my impressions:
Pluses:
A pillar noises where they meet the dash - gone.
B pillar noises - gone.
Dash noises just to the right of the radio - gone.
Drivers side window tick - gone.
Misc noises from the rear passenger area - gone.
Windshield wiper chatter - gone, 06 has redesigned wipers.
Rear window wiper - redesigned, easier to replace rubber.
Front cup holders - removable.
Rear console mounted cup holders - gone, cup holders are now in the center armrest.
Driver's seat noise/play - gone.
Leather seats - I like them infinitely better than cloth.
Heated seats - very welcome.
Color monitor - I like it a lot better than the orange one.
Gage faces - I like them better than the 04's.
Ride and handling - the same - tracks like it is on a rail, no vibrations, minimal wind noise.
Power steering - feels the same, my 04 felt a little heavy and I like it that way.
Fuel consumption - slightly better during the break in period than the 04; getting 21 on the road as compared to 19 during break in.
Minor differences:
High speed idle when engine is first started - 1500 rpms vs the 04's 1200 rpms.
Tach at 40mph - 1500rpms vs the 04's 1200rpms.
Tach at 70mph - 2000rpms vs the 04's 1800rpms.
Maybe just a gage difference here.
Minuses:
Pause/Mute button - gone, I miss it but can live without it.
Gage back lighting - daytime lighting is too bright and distracting, no way to dim them. During the day, I turn on my parking lights, the gages go dim and that solves the problem. The color monitor dims a little but is still easily readable.
High beam and cruise control indicator lights - at night, are too bright and distracting, they are not tied into the dimming switch. I applied a piece of frosted scotch tape to the gage lens at their locations and that muted their brightness - looks like crap but it works - problem solved.

RickM46-
Very good review.
I kind of like the idea of driving a new MO 80 miles to pick up your new MO.
Enjoy your new ride.

njjoe,
Thanks.
As an aside, the red 2006 Mo that I drove was a FWD also. It drove identically to my silver 2006 - so it was a great comparison to have at the time that i picked up mine.

Perhaps there should be a poll for the number of forum members who sell his/her 03-05 murano to get the '06 MO? :2:
To have repeat buyers for a MO means that the Nissan MO is THAT good! This will encourage potential MO buyer and the forum lurkers to make the purchase decision :4: |

I just was at a Nissan Dealership purchasing a 5yr 75K Gold Warranty and sat in an 06 Murano....I really like the interior changes.
Question I have is about the NAV system:
Think it is possible to have a software update done on an 05 Murano to get the updated Nav system. The dealer seems to think it is just software that has been updated...all the hardware is the same... |

LOL!
I'm buying another Murano, just haven't decided when!
I'd love to get one and drop something evil in it and go drag racing.
Something with 600 or so HP. Maybe a blown V10 Viper engine would be fun.
But seriously, I'll be considering it again in about 3-4 years, when the SRT becomes the weekend toy. (That's the current plan anyway.) |

How much did the warranty cost?

| I paid $681 (Dealer Cost) for the Gold 5yr 75K $0.00 deductible for the warranty. |

The Murano comes with a 5 year, 60000 mile powertrain warranty, so the Gold warranty cost $681 for the additional 15000 miles as long as you are still under 5 years of ownership. |

| The Gold Warranty is a bumper to bumper warranty same as factory. So everything is covered until 75K Engine, Electronics, Navigation system, power seat motors etc....Not just the powertrain.... |

I was looking at the NissanUSA Murano website and was amused to see that the Specification matrix lists All-Wheel Drive as STANDARD for all models, and Front-Wheel Drive as OPTIONAL on the S and SL!!
Hmmm... The "Standard" AWD model cost $2,400 more than the "Optional" FWD version. :ucrazy:

I love marketing departments. I just wish they'd stop smoking hemp on their breaks. |

| 2nd page. Looks to me that there is more to the 06 change than just the map disk because earlier versions are not compatible. Could be firmware on the DVD unit, I don't know. |
