What can I use to remove all the greasy, yucky, messy, dirt attracting "GUNK" they sprayed all over my engine compartment to make it look good?
Whatever I use is going to take several applications and Im looking for something that wont harm the body finish.
Damn.... I just spent 2 days with clay and polish on the body. |

Isn't that gunk for protection during shipment from over seas?
I might try something lights first like Simple Green... then perhaps move on to a Engine degreaser spray. But I'm not clear that you've got on your engine. |

| What on my engine and all over the engine compartment looks to be the same as cheep tire dressing. I can draw on it with my finger. Its a nasty clearish grey residue on my finger when I touch it. NASTY, NASTY, NASTY:banghead: |

Gunk makes several products.
The one I would recommend (And Don was referring to) is Gunk Degreaser. Been using it since I had to put a rag in the carburetor ......;)
And of course, maybe what they put on your engine IS Gunk that they forgot to spray off.
Try to keep the water out of the electrics.

IT has never done anything bad to my engine compartments, I have the engine Warm not hot. I spray it on, I let it sit for a about the time it takes to put it on plus say 3 to 4 minutes. Then Hose it off with a reasonable spray but not a hard jet. The engine warmth is then allowed to dry out what I can't wipe off.
If you engine is not dirty (or covered with "Gunk" as noted above) then a lighter weight product like simple green or Meguiars is good to go.
My engine compartment always glistens as I either wax metallic surfaces or use shiny armorall on the rubber and plastic components the under hood (only other place I use shiny Armorall is wheel wells. |

The runoff from hosing your engine down with these petroleum based cleaners (like Gunk or Foamy Engine Brite, or any of the similar products) is illegal in some areas since it can contaminate the ground water. Keep this in mind before you clean your engine and end up with a rainbow (you know the kind that shimmers on the top of a toxic water puddle) water stream coming out of your driveway.
That said, these products really work pretty well. |

Some of the cans (not necessarily Gunk, but I think Gunk makes Foamy Engine Brite and its where I read the label) have a warning on the side that you must use a container to catch the wastewater from cleaning the engine. Not even sure how thats possible - thats going to a be a huge wide pan to put underneath the car.
I agree it makes the product much harder to use (properly).
Another use for these engine degreasers is to clean oil spots from your driveway - you know...when someone makes a three point turn using your driveway and drips oil on it. A little powdered laundry detergent and a good spray with the degreaser, and the next day, you can hose the stain away. Whoops, there goes that disclaimer again.... :D |

The laundry detergent doesn't break down the Gunk stuff - the enzymes in it just helps dissolve the oil stain on your driveway.
I think thats one of the advertising points of Simple Green - its not petroleum based so you don't have to worry about the "pollution" as much. |

I think ill make a trip to the car wash so I dont mess up my drive and try the simple green trick along with whatever poison they have on their dial that says "engine cleaner".
It should be OK to use the Low Pressure setting under the hood and then spray the rest of the MO off when Im done. If it doesnt do the job, next time I will use the Gunk cleaner.
It looks good under the hood but this stuff is going to trap the dirt like fly paper. I just want to head it off before it happens.
Im fairly anal when it comes to keeping my rides clean and in good shape. The trick is to never let them get to dirty.

| I have used Castrol Super Clean with great results,a little agitation on the heavy stuff then hose off. Biodegradable no hazards. |
