Finally got up enough nerve to "pull" the front grill off and install some hardware cloth to protect the AC heat exchanger/evaporator from rocks and road debris. Then found out I don't have enough hardware cloth :( oh well, next weekend.

I got my hardware cloth at a local hardware store. Don't remember if Lowes carries it. And yes, putting screen in front of the radiator/heat exchanger will disrupt the airflow so bigger hole size is better. Don't go any smaller than 1/4" and 3/8" would be better.

Been using it for years and have never had to replace a heat exchanger/radiator. Also haven't had any problems with insufficient air flow or cooling.

Here is the idea on a Dodge PU, Jeep Cherokee, and the Z (painted it black for the Z):

Fastening the heardware cloth in place can be done with zip ties to available frame structures etc.

The plastic covers and the intake is held in place with these plastic speed clip thingies. There are two types. One screws out and the other you pry the center button up.
