Since I am the culprit/co-conspiriter of many a thread gone south...
I thought I would place a thread here which has no direction at all.
All I want from this thread is to inspire others to place thought provoking pictures here. Our comments and banter about the pics will naturally flow.....and, the thread changing direction will be perfectly natural instead of Hijacking perfectly useful threads that have to do with our beloved Mo.

Soooooo, without further meaningless blabber......

Speaking of multiple directions:

maybe I should have titled that last pic. It is multiple reentry vehicles coming in on Kwaj from an MX shot from Vandenberg. Pretty cool how they can independantly steer them.

It's much easier doing rope work in a dark cave pit rather than a lighted one.

Verticle cavers always remark how doing outside pits really gives you pucker. I'll never forget doing the Fantastic pit in Ellison's (586').
It is a pit about a mile back in the cave so it is totally without light.
Once you get 100' off the floor, all you can see is 50 feet up the rope and down the rope--no top, no bottom, no sides. It appears that you are in space climbing a never ending rope. It's much easier than doing Valhalla (285'). Valhalla is an open air pit with a bottom of about 4 acres, all in the light. I had an ascender malfunction there once and was very very happy to cross the lip at the top. I sat there resting beside a plaque in memory of two cavers who got killed there ( a ceiling calved off on them). You have to pass it before getting on rope to rappel--kind of forboding.
But the big thing is, once you get used to your harness and the equipment, hanging there doesn't bother you a bit. It's the rappel that gets you.
But, it's all in your head.

Most of my photography is solely for reverse engineering... Just point and shoot stuff. There was a time when I had a darkroom. (then I turned the lights on! Just kidding, really did have one.)

Well put.
I will add that keeping the camera still is 75% Lighting is 20% and the other 5% is luck :)

If nothing else use a tripod and set your cameras self timer rather then pressing the button with you finger.

On my forum I got tired of everyone posting crappy photos of their RCs I wrote a short easy to follow post that improved things a lot. Its all common stuff that we all once knew, Nothing special.
http://www.rcnitrotalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19423

I am a firm believer in good lenses. My camera isn't the best but I get good lenses. I just wish I had a clue how to use it.
jaak
Well, can't say I learned anything other than remembering to take the time to set up the shot properly. A rushed shot gets you rushed shot results.

One thing that I will disagree with, but only slightly, is auto focus. This is something I've been thinking about lately...

You can't always depend on auto focus to provide the plane of focus where you want it. That combined with controlling your depth of field can make a world of difference. With my digital camera, I've even considered connecting an external monitor so that I can confirm and adjust the shot's qualities before I let it record it. Something we couldn't do in the past...

And of course, a good lens allows you to take a good shot, if you take the time. (But it won't take it for you!)

Now where's that little tripod I had... Speaking of which, if you have a remote shutter trigger for your camera, this would be a good place to use it! Otherwise, ease down on the shutter and hold it, don't do a quick press and click.

This is cool, it's got me thinking about fundamentals I learned when I was 12... (Helps to have a 7 year older brother who was a pro.)

Now here's a question... Macro shots in nature where you don't have that controlled environment. Funny how the overcast days are the best...

Another question for the Digital Camera experts. I understand how a film camera works and the impact to depth of field by F stop, but not all digital cameras seem to work that way. There appear to be different mechanisms, many electronic, for controlling exposure. So that's going to change how depth of field is impacted in various cameras. Any thoughts?
Kris
jaak,
depth of field does not depend on camera, I mean film v. digital does not make a difference. Depth of field is a function of F-stop, focusing distance, lens focal length and “CoC - circle of confusion”. Now is the trick – during film days the most commonly value used for CoC was 33 micrometers, except for Leica who used 28 micrometers. In digital era most of the people go even lower – 18 micrometers.

One of the problems with digital is that people watch pics on the monitor screen and enlarge it to pixel level and analyze every pixel! In good old film days most people were satisfied with 4x6. So sharpness wasn’t an issue.

I hope I am making some sense out of this….

I have developed a small excel program that calculates it all. If you whish I can shoot it to you.
mgthe3
I have an old mamiya SLR that has a 55mm lens on it and I have a 250mm for telephoto stuff. The problem is that the prism is getting slow and I have to warm it up to not have a shadow somewhere on the pic. I have tried to get a pro lab to clean/lube it but they are scared of it.
My digi is a cheap 3mp...hard to justify a nice one to da wifey.

One of my wife's Callalilly's with the cheapy, you can see where it focused on the edge of the leaf instead of the COC.
FastEddy
You will have to look at the audience my post was written for. Most of the people on my forum have never used a camera for anything but "snapshots". My intent was to try and get them to think about the photo before they took it. Most of them have a simple digital camera that uses only auto focus and automatic settings.

If it got you thinking about the fundamentals, I would say you got something out of it.

90% of a good photo is using the basics the other 10% above the basics make a photo great. Some day I will learn more and be able to take better photos myself. In no way do I think im a good photographer. I just get lucky sometimes. If it wasn't for good equipment I don't think my photos would come out close to what they do with good equipment.

I have (2) 5.0 mp or greater cameras. there is a huge difference in the quality of the photos. Ill have to say the the lens is the primary factor. I have setup the same shot and taken it with both units and they are night and day.

More and more of the digital cameras are coming out with auto focus options allowing the user to choose the method they want. The Sony DSC-T1 I keep in my MO for snapshots will allow an adjustable pinpoint focus, infinity focus or an average focus at a predetermined range of depth. Its nice to have that option. For home I use the Canon Rebel with an assortment of Canon brand lenses.

*For ME* auto focus is a good option. My eyes aren't close to what they used to be. Even with the Diopter (SP?) on the Canon, I have a hard time doing it manually.
Kris
FastEddy,

I would say great photographs are 80% skills and 20% equipment. Most of the modern cameras are pretty good. Especially DSLR. As you I have Canon EOS 10D with bunch of lenses, mostly L glass except for standard 50 mm. Problem is we tend to take well too many shots – memory cards are getting cheaper and bigger! We do not “think” before pressing the button. And that is bad. But at least with DSLR I do have the option of switching to manual everything if required and of course the RAW format with 12 bits conversions.

But NOTHING beats photographer’s skills. It is always that basics that prevail….
FastEddy
So Im not the only one that fills up a 1 gig card to get one good photo? :D

RAW format and Photoshop make up for my lack of talent.
jaak
You guys are great, this has me thinking about stuff I've forgotten!

Kris, I guess to put this in context, I'm throwing "cheap" digital cameras into the mix as well as good ones. Not all digital cameras seem to have an actual physical F stop adjustment and that's were I'm concerned that the expected depth of field calculations fall apart, because the opening to light is not changing, just the detector's refresh rate or charge rate or whatever it's called, is being altered to change how many photons are collected before it's read and reset.

If F stop is emulated by different refresh rates of the CCD, then there would be no change in depth of field because there is no change in how the light strikes it.

Kris, I'd love the Excel program, if you're willing to share it. I'm positive I'd learn from your efforts.

FastEddy, I think you did a great job, I hope you understand that. You reminded me of things I've learned in the past, but haven't thought about for years and some great tips...

I don't know about you guys, but I find this a great refresher!:D

ahh... been busy with work. I just saw this and was LMAO!

While the thread's lost some of it's cool, it's still very interesting!

Kristen seems like a simple girl.... Franky, I find a Redhead with a 357 more exciting, but I already married a fiery Blonde with a commanding voice that can be heard through a crowd. For a while her nickname was "Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS" as her background is German and we saw the video in a store years back and started teasing her about it.

When she goes on a rant, her Brother calls her Paul Senior. (Yes from OCC.)

I like my women with fire... :) Never bored that way!

Speaking of planes, when I was in Oregon, I saw this...

I didn't realise they actually painted them topless. I suppose when these guys didn't know if they were coming back alive, it's the least they could be given...

I then wondered how many had tops painted on them, after the war.

This is right outside the navy nuclear power school.
I am uncertain as to what the rings are.
In the veeeeeery north of INEEL, there is another set of these rings with an obvious fence line around it.
I thought maybe it had to do with the nuclear powered plane they tested there.
GripperDon
as are at those increasing distances to allow for measurement of radiation levels for the purposes of calibration for measurement of the efficiency of various shielding schemes.

Only a guess based on your comment of nuclear testing. Could also be some sort of acoustic tests or even blast wave preparation.

All seems a bit strange considering the predictability of reduction with distance. Probably can't be that simple.

MAybe they place various shields or other things at those distances to test their effectiveness when subjected to the source at the center.

Might even be an early practice area for crop circle development.
