XM Satellite Information - Click HERE for Original Thread
sabo
Hi all,

First time user to this forum. All the SAT install threads (especially from jaak - thanks) convinced me to self-install my new OEM XM receiver and antenna. I've had my 2005 Platinum SL Murano touring for 3 months now.

I took the advice jaak and purchased from Grubbs Performance Parts ($220) for antenna and receiver. Kit was sent in a few days.

I just completed the install today. It took a novice like me (with the help of all the great links provided on this site) only an hour or so.

Hidden Antenna: I went with the hidden antenna in the back hatch. I preferred the no cutting option for antenna placement.

I posted photos of the install in my gallery. It was pretty simple and advise anyone to do it themselves and save a couple hundred bucks.

The most difficult part was cutting loose the N-BUS line for access and removing the pink connector piece on the antenna in order to fish the wire.

All-in-all it went well and i'm proud to say it works. Haven't had it out on the road yet, but i'll let you know.

Thank to all the great ideas, pics, and links.

Regards.

A new murano (with SAT) owner.

Post a message if you have questions on the install.

Thanks Sabo!

The reward for the work of figuring out and posting it, is hearing from people like you that benefit!

Keep enjoying your Murano!!! :D

Jaak,

Pics are up in my gallery, although not in sequencial order.

Have a look when you can and let me know how i did.

thanks professor!

signal isn't up yet from XM, but Channel 1 and 247 work!

regards.

Hey, they changed the design of the receiver!

I've never seen one like that. I wonder if there were thermal problems, as yours has all those vents!

Looking good!
sabo
jaak,

Never saw the old receiver, but it is encased and has vents all around....hey one question: This new receiver had three connection points: Antenna, N-BUS cable and what looks like another N-BUS connector, but with a slightly different prong configuration (I didn't use this one). Any ideas?

my xm is now up, i'm about to take it out for a test spin. Quality is great!
jaak
Yes, the other connector is for a second N-bus device. My 03's radio did not have the parts to drive the second N-Bus, but as an example, if you had a G35 with the outboard CD changer, then the changer would plug into the sat receiver instead of the radio.
tqt
I've got the old one also. Question for you, does this vented reciever show more than 10 characters on the display?

Hey guys,

Just an FYI,

It is my understanding that Nissan changed manufacturers for their satellite tuners. They could not get Clarion to fix all of the loading problems with their tuners. I can't remember the new mfgr., but the look of the tuner is a little different now. I would be curios to find out if the new tuners are free of the problems.

Sabo,

Great pics. Thanks for posting them. Receiver and anntena for $220? They must have dropped the price--or did you get some kind of special deal? Could you post a link?

Thanks!
sabo
toofargone,

that quote was a mistake....it was $220 for the tuner + 34.99 for the antenna. Sorry for that, but still a good deal. Other posts from earlier in the year and from 2004 indicated anywhere from $320 to $375 or so. I believe it was a holiday special....got in just before new years.

I followed this links provided by our friends in this forum.

http://www.grubbsperformance.com

just follow the links through Murano-Electronics-Audio.

Grubbs shipped to me in a few days.

Sorry the pics are not in sequencial order and I had to eliminate some due to the file size limitation...i'm new to the whole forum thing and posting pictures.

TQT,

I'll check out the display in the morning on my way to work and let you know. Are you talking about the # of characters across each line?

Regards.
sabo
tqt,

The are still only 10 characters across each line. It isn't the best and you would think Nissan would make adjustments so you can read everything, but it isn't all bad. Most station descriptions and song titles are fully viewable, but you'd expect for a $35K automobile, they would pay attention to such details.

Oh well....
John
Thanks for all the information sabo... I just bought the kit from grubbs, the price is only $199 right now! I know quite a few people have posted their installations but yours looks like it's the most recent posted here and I think I'm going with the same antenna mounting option as you. I'm going with Sirius however, since I've already gotten my wife a receiver and it's cheaper to add a second.

In retrospect, is there any specific things you wish you had known before you started that you could pass on (other than anything noted above of course).

Thanks!

The sad part is the radio's capable of two and a half screens worth of characters. It's just the sat receiver that can't cough up the characters to it.

Are you going for the hidden mount?

john,

i'm not sure there is anything specific i wished i'd known. My first thread following my installation indicates i'm a novice at the mods to any car.

Although, i'm an engineer, i've never given any thought to touching a vechile, but with the website and all the great help, the install of the SAT receiver was damn easy.

The hardest part, honestly was disconnecting the N-BUS wire underneath the back seat. Mine was taped together and bent on itself and i couldn't get a utility knife in there or see it. It took me probably 90% of the overall time of the install. There isn't much hand room back there.

The other thing is the disconnection of the connector piece (my was pink) from the end of the antenna. It was delicate and i didn't want to damage it. Once off, it was pretty simple.

There are alot of pictures of other installs where people have taken off the back sill, the side cargo compartment, but i didn't see the need to remove those.

Any way, my pictures pretty much say it all and if you have any questions...post a message.

Good luck.
John
GripperDon: Yep, that's the plan.

Sabo, thanks for the tips, I'll be sure to be careful on the items you mention. When I've installed things on cars before (electronics mostly), I've always had a problem getting the trim off without breaking it. They always seem to have these retainer clips that get broken. I was hoping not to have that problem this time.
sabo
john,

you have just a few things to remove:

1. 3rd brake light hatch - pops off with ease with long fingernails or screw driver (just watch scratching the plastic)

2. weather stripping around hatch - just pulls off (has some sealant or adhesive - not meant to stick permanently)

3. rubber grommet (hatch to hood) see photo '8 running antenna wire' in my gallery - where you fish the antenna wire from hatch to inside the car ceiling. just tug on each end and the pull out with ease and push back in.

4. spare tire and related covers - nothing to worry about here - this was meant to be removed at some point

5. rubber flap which covers the underside of the back seat - there are 2 or 3 plastic fittings which you pry off. Then just lift up the rubber flap (its not very flexible) and temporary tape to hold up and out of your way.

As I mentioned in my last post, some of the other installs show the back sill being removed, the side cargo compartment, but i didn't remove those during my install.

good luck and let me know how it works out.
John
Alright, I got it in! I wasn't very well prepared for the antenna install but I found that you can actually attach it to a small piece of metal at the very back of the hatch opening. It works pretty well. It kind of flickered in and out for the first 10 or 15 minutes now it hasn't skipped at all, even under big 6 lane underpasses. I can always install it better in the future without doing anything more than opening the hatch door.

The two hardest parts I had was

1) Getting the antenna cable through the rubber connector between the door and the car.

2) Getting the storage compartment back in. In retrospect I don't think I even had to take it off. I was following the directions they have on the Grubbs site though.

I really like having the radio in the dash even if it doesn't display quite as much information as I'd like. My wifes starmate model shows a little more, but she doesn't have the steering wheel controls. :P The only part I find annoying is having to hit the tuner dial every 10 minutes or so to keep it displaying the song information.. but other than that I really like it.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Hmm... I have the older unit and i just need to press it once and it stays. I find it annoying needing to press it.

Well I probaby exaggerated about every 10 minutes... maybe just whenever I go back to the radio then back to the sat. Still anoying, I don't understand the point.

Hi,
I just did the siriius install on my 2005 MO, and I didnt need to use the N-Bus cable that I got from Grabbs?
The pre-wired cable fits right in to the radio, and so did my old antena from my streamer, which works great.

any word on the n-bus? its now for sale shipped for $14

thanks

One more thing, the install was super easy, I dont thing that you really need to use all the things that come with the radio, I would say that if it wasent for the fact that this was my first time taking the rear boards apart, this now could take me 15 minutes with tools ready to go=)

this might be funny to some, I brough my laptop to the car with me, with the instractions on how to do the install open the whole time for referance, this was very helpful. finally get some usage out of my notebook=)
