I just bought a 06 Murano SL with Nav and i'm interested in getting a DVD system installed for the back headrests and also for the passenger sun-visor. Does anyone have any recommendations on which system is good?
Would I be better off to skip on getting the headrests monitors and get a flip-down screen?

I don't but would like to see some responses on this. I don't have kids but lots of folks do and like having that for long trips. To my amazement there weren't many threads on a search for aftermarket rear DVD player so this needs to be a sticky for a while. Found this one though:

Heres some opinions off the cuff FWIW. I don't think roof mount is the way to go for the MO unless you dont use the rear view mirror. I like your idea of seatback mounts but the passenger side could be troublesome with the passive passenger side airbag system in the 06's or the active headrest mechanisms on both driver and passenger sides since 03. I don't think the visor could stand the weight of a screen without modifying the clip. The OEM system is integrated into the back of the center console. Note for 06s, if you have the OEM rear DVD you get the old center console design, if not you get the all new for 06 center console design. Not sure about prewiring for the 06's given that. Also it appears the way to integrate audio into the factory stereo is using a PAC device. |

| I personally don't understand the need to spend a whole bunch of extra money just to get it integrated into the vehicle. Isn't it a lot more useful (as well as cheaper) to simply get personal portable ones? they have little things to hold them to the backs of the front seats and everything, so that small children can even use them. |

For the same reason we have integrated Stereo systems and don't take a portable radio or CD player with us inside the car!
I bet some people who have DVD players in their cars don't even have kids or hardly use their back seats....but like that 300ZX commercial used to say: "...but you know you could...." :D |

| I personaly chose the headrest monitors in my MO because it does not block or intefere with my rear view sight at all,unlike when u flip down the screen it completely block ur rear view. I have a set for sale if u are intersted and u can check my gallery to see how it looks in my truck. thanks |

My friend with a minvan who has the flip down says... the benefit is he can put a DVD into the system, start it up, adjust the volumn up for watching and down for talking... all from the drivers seat. With the portable ones on the back of the seat... it would be hard to control it from the drivers or passengers seat. |

If you have to entertain anyone less that 5 years old you don't want them handling a portable DVD player. Not if you want it to last, anyway.

| On a side note, I was looking for a small portable DVR and ran across the archos AV500/700. One of the reviews on cnet.com said they load movies into theirs and give it to their kids for watching movies when they go on trips. These have a hard drive and can record video as well as play it, but the portable DVP/DVR market is an interesting option to think about. |

i think i might go this route when the baby is born.. an affordable $250 each. transferable to the mommy's car or mine!!

I would like to get lcd sunvisor for passenger side,I already have a roof mounted lcd with a stand alone dvd player,how can I hook the sunvisor?does the dvd player need to have 2 video outputs for that or can I use an splitter wire to divert the video to 2 monitors?
I'm not sure if dvd player has 2 video outputs or not because is inside the console,also how to run the wires to the dvd player all the way from the visor? |

My nephew has 2 toddlers.
I referred him to the dual screen DVD player someone posted here.
It was sold at Walmart and was pretty cheap.
He (actually the kids) LOVE it. The whole thing mounts onto the two headrests.
Do a search, it's around here somewhere.... |

I would like to avoid anything that possibly presents something to hit your face into in a crash, So just for me rules out roof and headrests.
Wiring for those is also some what more that I have time for.
This leaves for me the rear face of the center console. Which should be easy for wires, no hazard and a some what natural head position and reachable from the front seat for assisting folks in rear if needed.
I would like one where the disk slot is on the side or top and parallel behind the screen. This eliminates fold down players.
The personal portables are handy for other uses but as they say
"It don't mean a thing if it don't have that Bling"
All IMO only.

Don, if the rear-seat passengers are wearing seatbelts, sitting forward, even with the rear seats in the fully upright position, I would venture to guess that there is little to no danger of your face making contact with the screen.
Rather, I'd think that in the event of a crash that other items in the car present more of a danger, like your wife's pocketbook flying around the cabin, that cup of hot coffee in your hand or even a close bottle of water sitting the the console.
I wouldn't fret too much if the DVD unit is stowed in a secure location and the headrests are properly attached.
For kicks and giggles, I (being 6'3) sat in the rear seat, belted myself in tried to gauge just how far your head would go in the event of a crash- it's not coming remotely close to the drivers headrest when that seat is in a normal operating position. Your hands hitting the screen- that's a different story. |

On the bling front, I've started seeing more and more SUVs with screens on the last row of headrests. No, not for the 3rd row passengers, for the people driving behind you. At first this was an LA thing, but I guess it has more widespread appeal now. |

As one who has a roof-mounted unit I can tell you that headrest units are the way to go. When opened, the roof-mounted screen definitely interferes with rear-view vision. The problem is compounded by the constricted rear view imposed by the Murano's rear side window design. And when the users wear headphones the cords dangle from the ceiling and impede everyone's view.
When I bought my '03 the dealer threw in a DVD player. I was ecstatic--I figured I was getting $1500 worth of equipment. Now I see I might rather have a $178 player.
The one concern I would have involves hiding the wires since it must be plugged in. How do you do it--wind your way through the inside of the seat?
Be sure to get something that enables you to play the player through your sound system. A good FM transmitter should do fine. The trick is finding a good one.
The really great thing is that this sub-$200 investment could increase the perceived value of your vehicle by a multiple of that. If an acquaintance or prospective buyer thinks it cost what you figured it cost before you looked... There's no reason to set them straight! |

Well, having recently installed an overhead mount I can't say that I regret not having gone with headrest mounting video. Each type of mount has its pros and cons. To get the same seamless integrated look with headrest mount you would have to spend substantially more money and probably have to replace the rather wild looking MO headrests all together. I do like headrest mount but only if its fully custom installed with no wires anywhere (junky looking)... and if such detail was reasonably affordable.
About the only con of overhead is the lack of rear view mirror use while the monitor is down. But the large side mirrors work adequately anyway.
Its really just a toss of a coin, or coins....
I'll be posting some detailed installation pictures for those interested in overhead. |

I actually purchased the very system you've noted. LOVE IT!
I only plan on keeping the MO for 4 years, then trading it, so why dump in all of the extra $ for headrest units and compromise safety with a flip down, right?
The headrests do not present a problem. I've countered the angle of the headrests by opposing the mounting straps, crossing them in an X pattern.
The only regret I have with the unit is that the volume cannot be controlled with the remote control, so it takes some reaching back over the headrest to raise/lower the volume. Another minor gripe is that if you are going to use both headsets, the cord connecting the master to the slave screen is short, so instead of running it down a seatback, across the floor and then back up again, it tends to hang between the 2. However, I only use the one screen so it doesn't present a problem.
For the money, you can't go wrong...Picture quality is surpisingly good and it keeps my 18 month old VERY quiet on long car trips. |

My nephew has this setup in his Envoy and his two kids (ages 2&5) love it.
