That is one of the great things I just love about some car dealers... not fully understanding the car, the warranty, or the support programs.
I realize the shield program does not officially commence until March, so regardless if the shields are in stock they do not have to install them on your car. However, in this case the dealer said he would install them. If the dealer made a commitment he should follow through. It is obvious your 2005 MO will eventually be covered by the recall. So why not minimize your inconvenience and install the shields while he has a chance? :3:

| I agree. I live about 50 miles from the dealer so it is a big inconvenience just to take it there. I have a closer dealer but when I was buying they acted like they didn't care if I bought or not so I hate to go back for anything. We will see though. |

I may be wrong, but I believe the recall is for the 2003 - 2005 models. The 2006 models may have been modified before they left for the US.

I haven't seen anything definitive, but it looks like some of the earlier 2006 models may be affected by the fuel tank shield recall.

Got my alternator (on my 2003 Mo) replaced with a remanufactured one for free via recall (letter0 last week. They informed me that my vehicle had two new recall notices, one for the fuel tank and the other for seat belts. They did a good job on the alternator replacement so I decided to get these two other items fixed next week. Just can't afford any breakdowns or troubles. This website is golden. Anyone have any idea what the seat belt recall entails?
As far a Usama Bin Laden goes: WE ARE ON HIM! |

| mdave2 |
| The seat belt recall involves installation of a protective plastic sleeve over the lower portion of the rear seat belts. It's hardly visible and is color coordinated to match your interior. |

I got my recall notice Saturday about the fuel tank and seat belt issue. They will install a guard on the rear belts to prevent them from being cut by the seat hinges in an accident.

OK fellas, I had the recall peformed on my MO today... as advertised. However there was an 06 in the lot being prepped for delivery... hmmm I wonder what the 06 has to protect its fuel tank. I took some pictures. What do you think. Might give you guys some ideas.
Its just a piece of rubber... why didn't they use that for the recall? |
|
|
| njjoe |
Gonzo-
I don't get it. I thought the purpose of the recall was to protect the front surface of the tank from debris kicked up by the front tires. The rubber (?) pad is primarily on the underside of the tank. The front surface is still not protected.

| The rubber sheild was on the '06 Murano. You can't tell from the picture but it starts at the top and comes down the front. The recall on my '03 had the plastic shield put on. Looks like they went from the metal cover on the 05 to the rubber shield on the '06. |

| with the metal sheild it looks like they swapped out the gas tank for a massive muffler. we already have one of those hangin out under there. but i certainly looks much better then the black plastic, i'll try and get them to swap out my plastic one for the metal. |

Just had my fuel shield installed last week. It does look ridiculous from underneath and not aerodynamic. I don't consider this something to worry about because it's not visible to the general public and really won't create much drag...that is, not much more than all the other under carriage parts of the frame, lines, and wheel that hanging down. I would rather have the thick plastic than aluminum. What’s up with the change to rubber? Better to bounce off the tank???
What I'm concerned about it is that it still doesn't fully protect the fuel tank and functions only like a wall. (In other words if you run over a bicycle or pile of road warrior debris, a bike pedal or forks would probably still puncture the tank. I have attached some SIDE/REAR images that were not included in some previous threads. Why don’t they cover the entire tank? |

Just had mine (plastic) put on last week. No big deal... the average Joe 6-Pack isn't going to notice, care less.
You guys be careful with self-made NHTSA mods. I am sure if you were driving a self-modded Pinto in '74 and got rear-ended/blown up, Ford would have washed their hands of you.
If you really can't stand the black plastic one - an '06 alumimum one might work. Worth looking into if you're that concerned about what other's think of your bottom... The alumimum one, by the way, is going to look just as crappy as the plastic one in snow, ice, rain, dirt, etc.
Have fun! - Jim |

I'll have to agree with you. The FUEL TANK SHEILD sounds strong but doesn't look like it can handle road warriors like ourselves. However, it's better than nothing at all on the interim. At least until I can find some titanium or 1/2 steel to weld around that fuel tank. (KAAABOOM!).
They must have been thinking "let's save money and not go all out" on this recall eh? The tank is still exposed...just not as directly as before without some kind of shielding, however feeble it may be.
Like the Pinto, it may take a few astronomical lawsuits from exploding fuel tanks before they redesign the fuel tank area.

Remember this schield is NOT designed to with stand big things like you are mentioning... just smaller "normal" day to day things like rocks and small items that are on the road daily. These small itemsw will really only hit the front of the tank.

I don't see why not. You could call ahead and make sure they have the metal shield in stock. Then when you drop off the car make sure the service advisor notes your preference. Then leave a note on the windshield emphasizing your preference. Then hope to God the mechanic pays notice to your requests.

| Make sure it is written on the service order. Then when they screw up, it's their fault (for whatever that is worth!). |

I requested that the metal one be installed (my first choice) but the Service Manager said they only stock plastic ones. I even showed the parts manager the part numbers from the scanned document in an earlier thread. You can always refuse to have a plastic one installed but that won't get you any fuel tank protection.
The decision for the type of materials to be used is at the dealer's discretion if you want the a fuel shield for FREE on a recall. Of course you can always order it and pay money to have it installed, but bend over and grab your ankles and wallet. . |

There is a recall on the gas tanks on certain 2005 MOs due to a defective fitting that is welded to the tank.
Campaign Number : 06V054000 Date : 2/21/2006
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
Defect Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, A FITTING FOR VAPOR RECIRCULATION, WHICH IS WELDED ON THE FUEL TANK, MAY COME OFF THE FUEL TANK BECAUSE INCORRECT MATERIAL WAS USED.
Consequence Summary: THIS COULD RESULT IN THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL COMING ON AND MAY RESULT IN SOME FUEL LEAKAGE. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
Corrective Summary: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL TANK WITH A NEW ONE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 20, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

DEALER STORIES
Tank replacement was not part of the recall I had. I would wonder why a dealer would spending that kind of time and money unless something was wrong. I would never believe a Service Manager who told me that they replaced an expensive item (in terms of labor plus materials) as part of a recall when all it needed was a sheild. I would guess they found a pin hole or fuel seep that scared em' enough to replace the tank. This would protect them from a lawsuit and keep the number of documented fuel tank punctures instances down. Either that or they were incompetent. In my area, service managers quit or get fired frequently. |

There is a seperate recall on the gas tank itself. This recall is not related to the fule tank shield recall.
As I stated in an earlier post on this thread, the fuel tank recall has been issued for certain 2005 MOs. Apparently a fitting that is welded to the tank is made with the wrong material.

I am going on a road trip from MN to KY next week and decided to get the fuel shield recall done. I am going in on Monday for 3 recalls:
- 2 Fuel related
- 1 Seatbelt
I tried to request the aluminum shield, but the service worker didn't seem to know what I was talking about. He told me I would get whatever the recall stated.
Is the aluminim shield something that has been confirmed and performed on other MO's? or did someone do the mod themselves? I just have a feeling that I will be getting the "snow plow." If it is something that was installed by a dealer, then wouldn't all dealers receive the same type of shield and have the bulky ones pulled out?
I will keep everyone posted and let you know what happens.
BTW - If you haven't received your letter yet, give Nissan a call and they will tell you what recall campaigns your MO qualifies for 1-800-647-7261 (have your VIN ready). |

I just got done speaking with the service manager and requested the aluminum shield, so if you are going to do the recall...MAKE SURE you talk to the service manager and request it! A regular service worker may not know about the 2 options.

I was told by both Service and Part Managers that the only choice of materials I had was the plastic fuel sheild. It is rinky dink. Now I'm PO. What, they just didn't want to spend the time/money to get the aluminum shield and you say you simply requested that they order one for your Mo and you got one?
Guess that's the differnence between dealerships. The Lesson learned for me here is to insist on the type material well before you have the work accomplished, or go to another dealer until you get what you want! |

| Just got back from a dealer (made appointment for Wednesday – noise in the drive train). First thing I noticed was a Murano parked at service department. What drew my attention was the plastic tank shields! They are much worse in real life than on the pictures! And I thought they were bad! They are absolutely awful! I am glad we know there are two types of shields. There is no way this crappy plastic is going on my car! |

OMFG...I just got back from the install and they told me that they didn't have any of the alumninum ones and that even if they did, they couldn't put it on because it would be classified as an incorrect install. So.......I got the mung on my car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apparently you can't ask for one or the other...It is VIN based, so you may get lucky and get the alumninum one.
WTF - This thing is uglier in life than in the pics. The service manager apparently stated that they get the shipments in and they cannot order the part. Nissan just ships then, so I was thinking wtf, how do they know how many to keep in stock then?
Damn...mother...fu...ing, sh..t...as..hole....p..ss....I am angry!

I wasn't quite sure, I take it you do not like the plastic shield? ;)
O.K., bad joke. Yeah, it definitely looks hideous. I have decided to forgo the install unless my dealer guarantees he will put on the metal shield. If not, then I will simply apply self-adhesive rubber sheets similar to the '06 OEM version.
Someone recently posted pics of the aluminum shield somewhere here. I'll see if I can find it.
Nissan dropped the ball big-time on this one.

I've seen "some" pics of the actual aluminin shield, but haven't seen one from a fellow member. If you find it, please do post. I am curious to see if the silver shields hang as low as the plastic ones do.
Also, is it safe to put the self-adhesive rubber sheets on yourself? |

Coness-
From what I saw in the photo, the aluminum shield was stamped to closely match the contours of the tank. Much more form fitting than the plastic shield.
As far as the rubber sheets go, I do not see why it would not be safe. The later '06 MOs have the sheets applied at the factory. I'll take a close look at an '06 and do the same to mine.

That is interesting that it was mentioned the type of shield you get is VIN related. I'll do a quick search now which years got what.
Update:
It seems the only evidence at this point of *anyone* having even seen the aluminum one is on a new 06. It would seem the 06 has two designs, a useless looking rubber pad that doesn't even cover the entire front of the tank, and the nicer looking aluminum shield.
It would seem it really is the luck of the draw what shield you end up with. I still haven't received my recall notice yet (for anything) so I'll probably call my dealer up and see what they have in stock. |

I have concluded the following, based on what I have heard from dealers (at least in my area) and what has been said on this link.
I contacted my dealer and tried to order the aluminum shield for the recall prior to me booking an appointment. The parts guy was very helpful and punched in the three part numbers I got from the following link:

Which states that part no. A7285-CC27A may supersede A7285-CC27B or CC25A. (see below pict from link above)

The parts guy indicated that the A7285-CC25A, which suppose to be the aluminum one does not exist and that the A7285-CC27B bounced him back to the plastic one A7285-CC27A. The other dealer said that they get what ever Nissan is shipping, which is the plastic.
My guess is that Nissan designed the aluminum shield to satisfy the NHTSA when Nissan first discovered this "defect".
Once the "fire" was put out, the Nissan bean counters probably realized how much it was going to cost Nissan with the aluminum version and indicated that a cheaper solution was needed. Wola! the infamous plastic one was created and the aluminum one was installed on some of the fortunate owners that got an earlier recall or simply lucked out with ones shipped to their dealer. I believe that the aluminum is a tease for the rest of us. Again all IMHO!
In the end, I ended up settling for the plastic one. I though that it was not that bad when I saw it on the 06 Murano. I must of been blinded my the newness of the 06, because after a couple of times of approaching my MO.......HOLY HANGING EYE SOARS BATMAN!!! that thing is BUTT UGLY!!! |

| I said it before and will say again – Nissan sucks! I simply cannot believe it that someone within Nissan would design such an ugly “thing” and put it on Murano. Unless this “somebody” was a bean counter……I will not put this crap on my car. It is, as many said it before, just butt ugly….I may design my own solution……. |

Say it ain't so!! :(
Thanx for the investigative work. Now we have a better understanding of why the elusive metal shield is rarely seen.

It's the "White Whale"...................................... I think someone posted a number to call and file a complaint. Perhaps we should start our own campaign (1-800-647-7261).
I can also concur w/ biggun that my dealer said the same thing: "We only get what Nissan ships us."
Even if you we're lucky to con a dealer into getting an aluminum one, that would cause problems for them because they wouldn't be able to file a recall claim w/ Nissan corp as they installed the wrong shield for your car.
Any hoot...if anyone has a white whale, please post actual pics of your MO (NOT THE "STOCK" Pics). |

How'd you pull that off? Luck of the draw or did you specify it?

You might be right. Today all 06 that I checked had aluminum shields... |

Well one thing for sure the plastic fuel tank shield is so ugly that i declined to have it installed. Had the rear seat belt recall done and signed the work order declining the plastic fuel tank shield recall. As suggested by Coness called the Nissan at (1-800-647-7261) and reiterated how ugly it is and that the members of Nissan Murano. Org. felt the same. Also mentioned that i would accept the aluminum shield and felt that Nissan was simply doing this to be on the cheap side. She did generate a file # and was glad to have this information to be passed along. Well hopefully a few more people will call Nissan and this will be rectified.

Funny, the 06's that I saw (about two months ago) all had the plastic on them. There must of been a change of heart by Nissan at some point. |

Well I guess it would help if I read the TSB I downloaded and compared it with my VIN...
Sure enought, I already had the cover, only it's not metal, it's a hard plastic except around the tail pipe.
Originally, I thought I was looking at a painted black gas tank. After a few taps on it, it's a hard plastic cover....

Hmm there is still something not adding up. This campaign refers to only 2 fuel shields, a plastic and an aluminum. Yet it also refers to three part numbers that may "supercede". Need some help, lets review.
My SE was built in Feb, got it the day after it arrived at the dealer this week and it came with the aluminum shield. Its VIN is later than this, ie >514232. Meaning the modification isn't needed because the new ones are coming with shields already installed.
Given:
A7285-CC25A ( is the Aluminum)
A7285-CC27A (is the Plastic street sweeper)
A7285-CC27B (?)
Have we confirmed this rubber plastic wrap around shield is P/N A7285-CC27B? |

It looks like Nissan's part number nomenclature may incorporate the part's revision level. It is possible the last character in the part number represents the revision level. (The initial configuration of the part starts out as xxxA. As it is revised, the part number changes to xxxB, xxxC, etc.) If that is the case then A7285-CC27A (the aptly-named street sweeper) has been superseded by A7285-CC27B. The latter part would be a revised version of the original offering. Usually you do not change the part number unless either form, fit, or function of the part has changed. I am assuming it is a revised plastic shield.

Right now I am in state that let me repeat my friend – “Frankly my dear, I do not give a ****!”
I am going to design and install my own solution. And it will be in line with Mr. What’s his name? I guess he is a CEO or something similar of Nissan…….anyway I believe he said:““In today’s competitive automotive landscape, there is no place for half-measures, no place for shortcuts and no substitute for great products”……and I intend to follow his words……;) |
