Fuel Shield Recall - PICS - Click HERE for Original Thread

You have got to be kidding.

Let's see...$20 in the US, and $400 in the Great White North. That is an exchange rate of $20 CAN to $1 US. :D Using that rate a new MO should cost $600,000 CAN. :p

I have to admit that I thought $20 was very inexpensive when first reported by brikhaus. I thought it would be around $100 US for a set.

I think Nissan needs to review their pricing policy for replacement parts.

brikhaus
I just noticed something. The part number I am listing above is a restricted part, but there is another part number for a right and left fuel shields. They are just over $100 each side. So I guess if you order the dealer part numbers that are not restricted it will cost you $204 US for the complete shield. So I guess the part number listed is supposed to be only for the recall (hence the "restricted" status) so it's probably Nissan cost for the part vs Nissan's rediculous markup for the exact same thing. 14 times markup so they are making $190 on each protector set, nice Nissan, way to gouge the loyal customer.

Just ordered mine from 1stnissanparts.com for approx. $20 shipped. The part number popped up in the database no problem.

I will know shortly if this worked properly.

Thanks to brikhaus who shared his source of the aluminum shields with us, I officially got rid of the hideous plastic snow plows. The aluminum shield protector's are now installed on my Mo!:D Installation was a breeze with the following instructions http://www.nissanhelp.com/Ownership...6/NTB06-023.htm I can say that this was the best $20 bucks that I have spent in my life!

What am I gonna do with the old shields? You bet your :bootyshak,
I'm gonna use them for target practice!!!! :2:

Do the required fasteners also come with the shield when ordered by your method?

-njjoe
brikhaus
Two plastic fasteners are included in the kit then you use 4 bolts that are already under your Mo. Actually you can install the shield without any plastic fasteners the 4 bolts hold it just fine. Since I am going for the tank replacement under the TSB for fuel filling problems, I am waiting to install the plastic fasteners until its all done. This is a much better shield in just about every possible way. Why they made the plastic one at all is beyond me.
Gonzo
Do the existing holes that the plastic shield used if installed get used again or are they left "opened" when the metal schield is installed?

Before installing the aluminum shield I had to remove a total of four plastic clips (two on each side of shield). I used a flat head screwdriver to pry/brake them out. The aluminum shield comes with a total of 2 new plastic clips, one for each shield. There was a total of one hole that stayed opened on each shield because the aluminum shield did not utilize those holes, since each shield mounted on with 2 screws in addition to the one mentioned plastic clip. The aluminum shield mounts on a whole lot more securely than the plastic one, plus covers much more penetrable area of the gas tank.

Just placed my order from www.abcnissanwholesale.com

They were out of stock but they are ordering more. The person who I talked to told me there is all of a sudden so much demand he cannot figure out how many more to order. He sold 6 just yesterday! He had been to our site but could not find this thread.

So anyway, if you want to order through the website, go to www.abcnissanwholesale.com then on the left of the screen, click on "nissan replacement parts" then in the new window that opens type the part number. It will come up on the screen and you can add it to your shopping cart there.

Bye bye plastic snow plaw....:D

Or, you can just go to 1stnissanparts.com where I ordered mine. I just typed in the part number on the search engine and ordered it. Cost was 14.22 +shipping.

Did not see that site until after I ordered. Price seems to be the same. That was the second best $20 I spent on my MO....:D

GREAT ADVICE ON ORDERING THE PROTECTOR!

I just ordered mine - for $20 its a complete no brainer. I'll see if I can take pictures to document the installation when I do it, for another "DIY Special" post.

Do you think leaving those holes exposed will have any issues down the road? I live in a winter salt area.

I would say the best way to seal the 2 exposed holes are to order 2 extra plastic clips, the same ones that you originally had to remove to install the shields. Based upon the climate you reside in, you want to keep all the elements out in order to avoid any cancer (rust) in the future. I left my holes unplugged here in Sunny Cali!
biggun
I may be wrong, but I can't imagine that those would be the only holes open on the frame/body. Most auto makers have extra holes in the frame to assist with manufacturing.

If not, then it shouldn't be a problem.
ekaxel
Reecived mine today. Excellent service from ABC NIssan in AZ. I'll mount it someday when it cools down a little.
I am going to spray mine with black undercoat.

Got mine today too.

Guess what I will be doing on Fourth of July......:D

We still are. I just got too excited....:2:

I will call/e-mail you to set a time this weekend. Sounds good?

For those who installed this themselves, did you have to jack-up the MO?

I had to Jack mine up, don't think the job could be done without lifting the Mo. It would be a real tight squeeze just to fit under an un-jacked Mo, which would'nt leave you any room to work with your tools.
brikhaus
I didnt have to jack up the Mo. I am a big guy and I can work just fine under the Mo without a lift. I change oil and yes I was able to put on the fuel protector without a lift. It would probably be easier with a lift but can be done quite easily without.

I just got my new sheild in... after confirming that it was going to be metal I got a plastic one. :3:

At least they told me I could send it back and they are going to contact Nissan to find out why.... I fear that the metal schields are drying up..... at least for $15 they are?

For now I'm still stuck with the plastic shield.
Eric L.
Uh oh. UPS left the package at my front door but I haven't been home to pick it up yet. PLEASE LET IT BE THE METAL SHIELD!

Here is the procedure to order this aluminum protector. I just did a test order and it looks like its about $20 shipped from Arizona for both left and right shields plus clips, its all one kit. If you goto www.abcnissanwholesale.com and click on "Nissan Replacement Parts" top left corner and then #2 "Search by Factory Part Number" with the part number A7285-CC25A it actually comes up in the database. Just finish the order and it will either just come to you, or their parts department might call you if they have any issues, but since they have already done it once (or alot more since this post), they should be able to handle this pretty easy.

Here is the link again from brikhaus' post above.

Installed metal shields & painted black. Took about 15 minutes, + the time to take off the old ones. L old one was extensively modified and had some pop rivets to drill out. R old was original, but was all pop riveted on due to hitting a lot of stuff and continually losing the plastic fasteners.
Looks much better....
brikhaus
The problem with ordering from other dealers besides ABC Nissan is that their computers substitute the metal part number for the plastic one automatically. So the parts guy will probably just go ahead and get you the wrong one. I went round and round with ABC Nissan for a day trying to get the procedure for ordering the metal shields. The parts guy has to special order these from Nissan, which is more work than just putting in the order on the computer, and many dealers don't really know how to do this. Go with ABC Nissan I am sure with all these orders they are getting really good at doing the special order without any explaination from you. If you go with another dealer make sure you talk to the parts guy and explain how they have to contact their parts rep at Nissan for the special order form.

I agree. They are getting good at it. When I called to order mine, the parts guy finished the part number for me as soon as I started saying it. He knew it by heart simply because he was selling them so fast he could not keep up with it. He did ask me to order online though because he was out of stock at that point and could not take my order on the phone...I still got mine super fast...
Eric L.
I'll try to take some pictures of the install and post another DIY "replace your plastic snowplow with the aluminum wonder shield" thread. Might not get to this for a week or two though - the weather is just too hot to work in my garage comfortably.
ekaxel
I don' think a DIY would accomplish much. The metal one uses the same bolts and plastic fastener holes as the plastic one did. Only tools required are a screwdriver and a 11mm socket....

The way I see it, posting it cannot hurt, and can only help. I used to think everyone knew how to do their own brakes too, but apparently the DIY brake job post has proven to be useful to many people over the past couple years.

Maybe we need a DIY "how to read the oil level off the dipstick" post. :p

Go for it Eric. risaralda and I installed the aluminum shields on both of our cars this past Saturday and took some pictures. But I think you will do a better job of the DIY write-up. It was a an easy job though. Mine had the plastic ones and risaralda's did not. The hardest part was taking the plastic clips off the old one without breaking them so that they could be used again (I am nutz when it comes to saving stuff!). I think we managed to have a couple of extra plastic clips in case anyone needs them.

Been pretty busy as of late, so the writeup/install will have to wait until I get over this summer crunch. But it will be posted, eventually.

Please post it. Not because it is a difficult DYI , but rather because it is easier when you have directions and know and have seen what to expect. A picture worth 1000 words! Your brake post is a hit!!!
I just ordered mine on ABC site. Looking forward to get the part and to view your post!

can anyone pleae please post a picture of the newly ordered/installed shield?

There *is* a picture of the installed metal shield (installed by dealer) somewhere in this thread (check the earlier pages), since I think the 2006's and 2007's came standard with the metal shields.

is the ordered part from abcnissan the same as the 2007 factory-installed shield?
Someone mentioned that there are 2 parts (L + R). the 2007 seem to have a one-piece protector...
brikhaus
I dont believe they are the same. I have seen pictures of the 07 protector which looks very similar but it looked like it screwed in differently. My upgraded protector bolted in using one of the screws in front of the wheel well then another attached to the center protector which the 07 did as well. The 07 protector seemed to bolt more under the Mo but I could be wrong. They serve the same purpose and looks very similar. I got upgraded to the 07 fuel tank (my Mo is an 06) and the protector fits just like the 07 but it does looks slightly different from the picts I have seen of the 07. I think the difference is the 07 was designed to have the aluminum protectors from day 1, all the others were not and need a slightly modified protector to adapt to the older mounting holes. I know also that the protectors for the 07 cost substantially more than the replacement protectors we are discussing in this thread (something like $200 vs $20) so there is no reason to order that one unless you have an 07 that needs replacing. Yes there are 2 parts (L + R) (same part number its a kit) and the existing center aluminum tank protector that the Mo comes with already. I wonder if the 07 is all 3 pieces in 1?

FYI: I have an early model 06 that didnt have the metal shields they actually started adding those mid year 06. My "06" was built Sep of 05 and sold in December 05.

Just ordered one from abcnissanwholesale.com.
I did specify "Please verify the it is aluminum one...".

Plastic one was installed awhile ago, along with rear seatbelt recall, and alt. recall.

Ok, my pictoral for the DIY fuel shield replacement has been posted. Hope people find it useful.
