2007 Altima and Maxima announced (horsepower drop) - Click HERE for Original Thread

Details available at www.nissannews.com

You can see the pictures for yourself, but the big news is that the only automatic transmission offered for the new Altima and Maxima is the CVT. Curiously the Maxima loses 10hp and 3lb/ft torque from the "next generation" 3.5L VQ (now at 255hp and 252lb/ft) but the Altima gets a 15hp bump to "265-plus hp." What's going on here? And those aren't even SAE certified numbers, so knock ~15hp off of that to compare to values reported by Honda and Toyota. The 4-cyl Altima loses 10hp as well, down to 165hp (also not SAE certified, but the old 1994 SAE rating). A 6-spd manual is available on both models, so perhaps the automatic Altima will have 255hp as well, with the manual having 265hp.

I am curious whether the horsepower drop was to accomodate the CVT. Its possible that the CVT efficiency in gearing makes up for the drop in power, and overall performance is increased.

“In today’s competitive automotive landscape, there is no place for half-measures, no place for shortcuts and no substitute for great products,” said Mr. Ghosn. “This is the next generation of Nissan products, the next generation of SHIFT_.”

I just wonder how this quote relates to the Murano tank shield....I am really angr. I will definitely refuse to take back my car unless the crappy shields are off or the proper one mounted. As per Mr. “In today’s competitive automotive landscape, there is no place for half-measures, no place for shortcuts and no substitute for great products,”

The fact that Nissan is going to the CVT as their transmission of choice must mean that their experience with the Murano CVT has been a positive one.

you have a point. However, I just got back from a dealer and he is saying they still do not repair anything! So if CVT goes you looking at $4k+. And it will hurt.

Somehow, I do not see independents doing CVT's anytime soon.

Nissannews.com has been updated and its now reporting the horsepower values reported for the 2007 Altima and Maxima to be SAE 2004 (the new standard). It is interesting to see that the 10hp drop in the Maxima may be due entirely to the new SAE rating than CVT limitations. This is probably also a good estimate of what the SAE rating of our Muranos is (the difference that is). The foreign market Muranos make 231hp, so I guess -14hp isn't too unreasonable given the new standard.

Note that unless its a new model, usually the hp ratings are not recalculated with the new SAE method.

hmm... interesting, it's just april and you can see almost half of nissans 'o7 line up already. maybe the 07 mo's will have the push button start with intelli key and blue tooth.

The fact that the CVT is the only option in the Maxima doesn't make sense. Not that the maxima makes sense when you have the Altima which is so nice. You can't take the Maxima the luxury route since you have the G35 so what can you do? Take it the high performance route but fo rthat youneed a manual. I just don't know what Nissan things it's doing with the Maxima, for my money I'd get the G35.

For my money, I think I actually am going to buy the g35. I think the new max fixed all the things I didn't like about the current gen max (front end and interior), but I can't equate CVT with 'sports sedan'.

One major thing I haven't seen anyone mention regarding CVT.... check out the new Lexus LS600h. This thing is the ultimate flagship automobile, with an estimated 430 horsepower. It's got a 2 stage CVT....

Edmunds first drive of the 2007 Altima says that the CVT has once again been reprogrammed to feel more sporty, this time, exhibiting noticeable shift points (if I read the article correctly). This kind of defeats the point of a CVT, but oh well, if it will convince customers, then I'm all for it. Keep in mind the average driver doesn't even know how many forward gears their automatic transmission has, much less how a CVT would work.

No true,
we discussed it quite extensively a week or so ago....in another thread

Interesting review. I always liked the Altima. Now it seems even better. Still it is FWD. And CVT. I love the CVT but am afraid of its reliability and longevity. And repair cost.......

The only HP/Torque curve I've seen was from 03 for the Z. Notice anything peculiar?
hfelknor
Yes.
It is a hand drawn chart. Fake, in other words.

Max HP and TQ MUST happen at 5200 RPM for that is the formula that figures HP.
(Make that 5252 RPM to be precise)

Not quite. Torque and power are equal at ~5200 RPM given ft-lb for torque and horsepower for power. Plenty of engines develop both max torque and max hp way above ~5200rpm, for example almost all motorcycle engines. But the two values are equal at ~5200.
hfelknor
Well, that's what I meant.
Show me a chart where they don't crossover at 5200 and I 'll show you a fake chart.

Ain't nothing growing on you guys. :D

It's just another Nissan lie, but obviously it's more than just Nissan or they wouldn't be changing to a new standard. Take the OEM HP claims with a grain of salt...or 5 lb. block as the case may be :D.
