| I noticed a thunking noise that occurs when I back out of the driveway, shift into drive, and accelerate. The noise occurs just when the vehicle starts to move forward, and occurs only once until I repeat the sequence. It seems to be worse when I turn the wheel before shifting and hitting the gas. It's hard to tell, but it seems like it is coming from the wheel area. No other problems driving. Anyone else notice this? Could it be the CV joint? Any help appreciated. |

sorry to hear this..........
awd???
cold engine??
is the car still moving in reverse (at all) before you select "d" ??
will it make the sound when turning the opposite way too (but jus less??)
the more info, the better |

| AWD, does not depend on temp, noise only when the car starts to move forward and not when shifting. One "thunk" noise, then everything is fine. No relation to parking brake. Seems to happen most when the sterring wheel is turned to the left before shifting into drive. Thanks! |

| Take it to the dealer immediately and let us know. I would guess any one of several possibilities. No, this is not normal. I back out of my drive way with the steering wheel cranked all the way left every day. No clunk. |

i agree... document the situation ENTIRELY......
i mean..... write down what makes it happen, when it first started (mileage and date) how often it occurs, ect........
this'll help them i.d. the problem better, imo |

| I always get a thunk if I shift from D - N - R if the car is moving every so slightly. Before going into R I make sure the car is completely stopped. No issues with this technique. |

I asked because I drove one a few years ago. Unfortunately it was 4 cylinder model. The engine was terrible. However car was nice. Put on it 130K without any problems.
My wife used to own 1999 V6 model - beautiful engine with smart gearbox - grade logic control, adaptable etc. The car was called Magna but is known here as Dimante. Never had any problems. Especially liked the satchels windows. Still have some pictures of it from Duntree River crossing. ;) |

| Here is the first one – Duntree River crossing. Beyond this river is only 10 miles sealed road after which 800 miles unsealed road. All the way to Cape York, the tip of Australia. Interesting country. |

Yes, there were several models of Magna available. The top of the line was Verada if I recall correctly. And she was exported, and I believe still is to the US market.
It is uniquely Australian car - designed and built in Australia. As Aussie say - designed for specific Australian conditions. Whatever it means. ;)
Anyway, It was nice car. On this one we put probably 35k before transfer. Pity we could not take car with us........ |

Hey,
I started noticing the same noise...when I reverse then turn the wheel to the left and put it in drive. A weird thung noise. I simulated the same procedure when I got home but no noise. Seems like it happens only when the engine first starts. Anyone else having this same problem????

FYI,
The thunk will come if you hit the gas too quickly after shifting into Drive. Not good for the CVT I am thinking, but I have 6 years bumper to bumper to not worry about that.
Enjoy the ride... I do. |

Well,
I did some investigating the next morning....before I reversed out of my driveway I decided to turned the steering wheel and found that same thunk noise when I turned it from left to right. I'm woundering if it has something to do with the alignment or the steering of the car. It could be the result of the big 18 inch wheels turning. This only happens first initial start-up after that it's OK. I spoke with my dealership sales person and he said to have it check out with my next scheduled maintenance. I will keep you guys posted on the outcome....thanks for your help!!!
We had alot of rain on the east coast this week and the MO drives through the deep puddles with ease. The 4 wheel drive also gives me a sense of security but it's not needed with the MO. Can't wait to try the "MO" in "snow"....

| This has been happening to me recently too. I am going to keep an eye on it to see when it happens, whether it is when i first get in or not. I will post back my results too! :) |

I had the “THUNK” noise from the very 1st day on my 2004 MO. The problem is a loose bolt / fitting in the steering mechanism. I took my MO to the dealer and the tech tightened the assembly and no “THUNK” since. The steering seems to be a little tighter as well.
I think the ROBOTS in Japan had a loose grip when tightening.
Good luck everyone.

hotcook88,
Do you know what they tightened??? My dealer is saying they would have to duplicated the problem.....I want to make certain they fix it right thing. Thanks......any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

If he doesn't reply back with a more specific answer, I would let them know you have heard someone else have a problem with this and that it was related to a loose bolt somewhere related to the steering column/system. I would assume that it it more pronounced in the left hand turning radius due to more pressure being placed on that bolt when the steering column is turned to the left.
A. Sounds realistic and easily repaired. They can put it on the lift, have someone in the driver seat do what you do to reproduce the problem while they are underneath visually looking/listening for the problem.
Should be an easy fix for a good mechanic/dealership. As long as they aren't the type that are "too smart have a client diagnose or tell them how to fix it".
Good luck,

For what it's worth, my car does the same thing. When I pull out of the driveway in the morning then put it in drive and accelerate I hear a clunking noise. I've just assumed it was the ABS self test described in the manual.

We just started hearing a 'thunk' when accelerating from a stop. If you take off slowly it doesn't happen - but with about 3/4 throttle it'll happen. It is going in to have the window channel thingies replaced so I'll have them check it out then.
I would agree with the previous comment about the ABS. It is much quieter on the Nissan than a few other vehicles I know. |

Well all Mo owners,
Ironically with the cold weather the MO hasn't been thunking. But I still wanted the dealer to look at it "Better safe than Sorry". I just got back from the dealer and the outcome was a loose bolt in the steering mechanism. It's technically not a "Recall"......but addressed as a Service Bulletin. If your having the same problem I would schedule an appointment with the dealer to have it taken care of. On the ride back the MO definitely feels allot tighter.
