Two parter....
1 - Do you change your own oil or do you have it changed for you?
2 - How much does it cost you ? (For each part and what kind do you chose to use if you do it yourself?)
- My last time, I went to STS and paid $24.99. (I trust them there, my wife and parents use this place for a lot of car troubleshooting.) If it is much cheaper to do it myself, I would give it a whirl. How much is a filter and how much oil does it take? |

5 qts Mobil One EP 5w30 ~$20
OEM Nissan Filter ~$5
So it costs about the same as a cheapie oil change, except I get a factory filter with anti drainback valve and top of the line synthetic oil.
Fumoto valve makes oil changes a breeze - no mess. |

Total - $32
More expensive than most places. However, i enjoy it, get quality oil and oil filter and I still trust myself!
Cost is secondary here. |

Total - $37.61 |

Not some mch about $$ but rather to ensure its done correctly and it quicker than having it done at the garrage. The MO is soooo easy. No ramps. |

Use local Penzoil joint after starting out doing it myself as usual.
Gotten to the point where I have no problem getting under the car and draining the oil. However I need the emergency squad to get back out and up....... :D
Besides, I intend to sell/trade the car with less than 100K.
The engine is famous for doing 200K miles plus.
I no longer let the engine live at 5,000 RPM.

Bulk Dino from Penzoil (5w-30) is fine.

I supply my oil and have dealer change it:
Mobil-1 5-30W $28 @ Costco
Change: $16 @ dealer, includes filter and washer
Total: $44 every 5,000 miles or 125 hours |

I put whatever is on sale 5W30, usually around $5 for the oil
Factory filter and washer: ~$7
I do the S2000 at the same time although she gets Mobil1 :) and even there it's overkill for how frequently I do the changes.
Then I dump the used oil down the stormdrain and give the used filters to my little daughter to play with. :2: Kidding, I drop off all the nasty carcinogenic mess triple bagged at the local auto parts place, double gloved the whole time. |

started out letting the dealer do it--my maint is covered for free.
BUT, I changed it myself last time and noticed a big difference with mobil 1.
This last time however, the dealer decided to change it themselves with only 2k on the mobile 1, I am noticing more engine noise.
I'll probably change it once again back to mobil 1. With mobile 1 I couldn't hear it idling with the door open--I can now. |

Do I buy the filter from the Nissan Dealership? The oil I assume I buy where ever I can find it cheapest... like an auto parts store or Sam's Club, right?
I don't need a lift, right? I can just slide under the Murano as is. Do I warm the engine up a little before I do it or do it while the engine is totally cold ? I would think a little warm to heat up the oil and losen it a little... but what do I know. |

Cheapest method of buying filters is to purchase a bunch of them at the same time - most dealers will sell them for between $5 and $6 if you buy, say, 10 at a time. Yeah I know that is a lot.
Its not a bad idea to warm up the engine before draining the oil, but if you are doing it yourself, even cold oil will drain thoroughly if you give it a little bit of time.
My local Sams Club has mysteriously stopped selling Mobil One 5w30, but they do have 10w30. They switched instead to Castrol Syntec 5w30, which doesn't quite have the positive reputation that Mobil One has (i.e. its not factory fill on any car I know of).

2K on the Mobil1? They probably drained that oil and put it into their own car! What a waste. One of the main advantages of using a full synthetic is that it doesn't have to be changed as often. 2K is really too soon except maybe if you just ran the Baja 1000 twice.
Costco sells cases of Mobil1 5W30 (well, they did last time I checked).
In case the :2: was missed, no I do not dump used oil down the drain, that was sarcastic humor. |

Yes, I know. I was very bummed. I asked them to fix the noise and rotate the tires. Came back with oil changed, tires rotated in x pattern, gas tank shields, seat belt thingies.
And yes Gonzo, there was a very apparent difference in engine sound. I never noticed it going from dino to mobil 1, but back again, yep, I do notice it. |

The dealer should prompt you to buy the washer for the drain bolt when you buy a filter. If not, ask for a drain bolt washer. This should be replaced each time you change the oil although some people just re-use the old pre-crushed washer. Honestly, the drain bolt isn't holding the car together, it's just there to drain the oil so as long as it doesn't get overtorqued, it won't damage the pan.
This is important: Find out about what to do with the used oil before getting started. You don't want that stuff sitting around your garage. Some gas stations will take it, some car parts stores will have a place to dump the used oil but won't take the plastic containers or the filters. My neighborhood also has used oil pickup twice a year but they prefer gallon containers. Kitty litter does a great job of soaking up spills and WD-40 is good for wiping up after.
The less contact you have with the used oil, the better so I avoid transfering it from one container to another as much as possible. There are some decent plastic drainpans that have a large mouth to catch the oil with a mesh to catch the bolt and a smaller mouth on one end to pour the oil out. I use one of those and have it inside several black garbage bags. Each time I change the oil, it gets yet another black garbage bag on the outside for the trip to Kragen where I dump my oil. The plastic containers the fresh oil came in is recyclable with whatever oil is left inside (after all, that plastic used to be oil of sorts at one time). |

When you remove the oil pan bolt to drain the oil you will notice a flat copper washer on the shank of the bolt. This is the copper crush washer (Nissan p/n: 11026-01M02) that should be changed whenever you remove the bolt.
The washer has a "C"-shaped cross section that collapses as you tighten the bolt.
I've changed the oil twice. The first time the part's guy threw in the washer when I bought the filter, the other time it cost me $1.16.

How much does your Oil Change cost?
My dealer sent me a mailer with a "30 Minute Oil & Filter Change" coupon. The price is $26.95, which is competitive with other outfits in the area.
Regardless of the price, I will continue to change my own oil.

| I pretty much change the crush washer about every 4 oil changes. Never had a leak in over 15 years doing so. |

Well you kind of have is backwards. 5W-30 for winter and 10W-30 for summer. However look in your owners manual. Generally speaking 5W-30 is good for all year round. |
