Side mirror camera - Click HERE for Original Thread

I managed to buy MO side mirror assembly with camera from Japan through a friend. Have to figure how to intergrate into my S'pore local fitted reverse camera LCD & GPS system. I need to contact the local installor about their system. If you have any idea about this Japan local market camera wiring please feedback and welcome your suggestion.

I took a few picture of the side mirror assembly. The side mirror come with heated mirror. Looking at the wiring, there are 6 wires for the camera alone. Here are the pictures:

Whats the purpose of side mirror cameras? Can't you just use the mirror? I want to know a way to be able to turn on the rear camera when I'm sitting at a red light, without putting it in reverse, and there is a hot chick behind me. Maybe even hook up a dvr so I can make my own video "Girls Gone Wild at Stop Lights"

You can see the front wheel area. Check the Nissan Japan website to have better idea of the side mirror camera:

Helps you to see curb when parallel parking.

The side cameras are for those who don't know how to drive....:D

And the rear camera does not show the driver behind you, only the front of the car can be seen. For what you want to do get a webcam...:2:

How much did these mirrors cost?

If the camera has 6 wires, I will try to guess what they are for.

1. power
2. ground
3. switched power
4. camera on switch
5. video feed
6. video feed 2??

Do you think Im on the right track?

Cost 56,000 yen + 5% sale tax.
I think you're close.

You have got to be kidding!! Are the parking skills of drivers in Japan that poor that Nissan needs to install curb cameras to assist them in this simple task? Or is this simply an electronic gimmick? The rear camera is ridiculous enough, but now curb cameras? What's next, a front facing camera so you never have to look outside the car?

They do have really tight allyways and parking complexes in Japan. These cameras can help in this regard.

I do think this has something to do with it also.

Yeah, do this in Philadelphia and you'll get "Hot Chicks Putting on Eye Makeup Right Before They Rear End You" and not in a good way... would be good when you go to court.
Margatenj
This whole idea sounds completely dumb... sorry, but if you cannot park a car w/o a camera pointed at the curb, what are you going to do if it breaks ~ or if you need to drive another car? What if its dark outside? does it have a light for the camera? Night-Vision Low Lux Camera? RAIN!!!??

What if girls are watching, they're all going to laugh at you, they're all going to laugh at you, they're all going to laugh at you, (sorry having a flashback from the Stephen King movie "Carrie")

Anyway, if you're driving a car and looking at a video display on the dash you'll end up killing someone... a billion years from now, the only people alive will be those that drive using video cameras and cockroaches.... the streets will be littered with old crushed human and animal bones. ... correct me if I'm wrong but that is the story-line behind the movie "Mad Max"? ~ yeah, me likey TV.

How would this work while backing up while parking? Split Screen? ...don't think so. (keep the frig away from my car while parking!)

Whats next? Cameras under your car encase someone or an animal crawled under your car? Wait!!! What if someone is roof surfing on your car and you're about to enter a low headroom parking garage??

Maybe a "cat check cam" (in street garage slang, it would be called a "C3") to make sure no cats are sleeping on your warm engine block before you start your car in the morning and turn them in to bloody confetti kitty cole slaw???

mmmm, bloody confetti kitty cole slaw! <said like Homer>

Cameras are for Soccer Moms that don't know how to drive.

Or if you're missing an eye and have zero stereoscopic depth perception.

"stereoscopic" ... damn I sound all scientific and sh*t!

But if my car had it, I would think it was really really neat, and I would never never tell a living sole unless I lost an eye.

Okay here comes the nurse with my meds. I'll write more after they kick in.

AND Happy "Sync-co-de-my-oh" :1:
Frumunda Cheese
I feel like the rear camera is very useful. That way when I back out in the morning I can assure myself there are no dead bodies laying behind me. It also will come in handy when my child is born and leaves his/her bike behind the car. I had several bikes run over when I was a kid until I learn not to leave them behind dad's van. In Korea they have mirrors pointing down from the back roof area. That way you look into two mirrors to see whats down there. Then you can back in to those tight areas without knocking over the moped behind you.

Traced the wire to the camera, only 4 wires. Your suggestion above should be correct: power, ground, camera switch, video. (Color: Black with white stripe, Yellow with black stripe, red with white stripe, blue with black stripe)

4 wires should be easy then.

Black wire - ground
yellow wire - power
red wire - camera switch
blue - video feed

I estimate that should be the colours.

Got it solved, also managed to get input and confirmation from a forum member's friend from Japan and the wiring diagram for the camera

Wire color at the side mirror assembly:
Black wire (# 6) - video
yellow wire (# 14)- shield ground
red wire (#13) - +V
Blue #7) - ground

Green (#15) - LED (+)
White (#8) - LED (-)

But still not understand why need to have the LED (+), #15 and LED (-) , #8 for the camera connection from the diagram below:

But for the camera
bigdongers
looks like I was way off the colour predictions :)

Why dont the car manufactures use the standard colour schemes for wiring??

Just a guess, but it is possible that those wires are for either the camera's built-in LED or IR (much like those on TV remote controls) that emit light that camera can "see" but humans cannot. Its purpose of course would then be to illuminate the area for the camera at night....
sgpmo
I think you're correct. If not it will defeat the purpose to have camera work on daylight but not at night. I shall test the camera and LED at home with DC power supply. Will have to add a series 1K ohms resistor to the LED input. Not sure if the LED connection have any resistor. It will kill the LED with 12V apply directly.
sgpmo
Intalled the door mirror camera. Work ok when engine off. When engine is running the video picture become bad. Not sure what happen. Confirm it is coming from the door mirror camera, not the LCD electronics. I also checked the grounding, it's ok.

Anyone experience this probelm before? Let me know if you have anyone idea?

It'll be a VR helmet next. hehe

That way you can turn your head to see 360 degrees.....

Is the power source to the mirror camera regulated? It could be the alternator interferring with the power causing the picture to be messed up.

Try powering the mirror from an external source like a battery to see if the problem still occurs when the engine is running.
sgpmo
Not regulated. I tapped from the fuse junction box. Thinking of tapping the the power from the audio source, not sure it will help.
Good idea, to use external source to isolate. Thanks for input.

I remember I had a reverse camera installed to my CRV before. I had it wired up to the 12v power outlet in the rear and it didnt have this blurring problem. Maybe try wiring to one of the outlets too?

Sometimes I wish I had a camera on the front bumper. My garage is packed tight and I have a lawn tractor in front of the MO. I only have literally a couple of inches between hitting the tractor and not being able to close the garage door. Now, I found a cheaper solution on ebay, which is a motion activated laser mounted on the ceiling, designed as parking aid.

Tried on the rear power outlet. No help.:(

Look like the problem is intermittent, happen most of time. I tested it again last night without making any changes & it worked fine. But it happened again this morning.

What did you use to output it to the LCD screen? Do you have a back-up camera?
I was thinking of a side mirror or front bumper camera myself. I garage in my building is small and it would help if i could see front passenger side....
How do you turn it on? Is it always on?
gs465
what was the total cost of this mod?
sgpmo
I've back-up camera.
I used RCA connector to connect to RCA input (video in) of LCD.
Installed push button on/off switch to turn on/off side mirror camera.
It cost about $650 for the a side mirror assembly with camera from Japan.
rayleiwu
hey, I saw you have the side turn signal (similar to those on euro cars), where did you get those?
sgpmo
It came with the car.
sean69
So you have the clear side turn signal, we have these in my country too, guess you must have the white backup light on one side of the rear license too...
I brought home a US Mo & don't like the turn signal, think it ruins the cleanliness of the sides IMO..

I come back to your mirror cameras & what been said. I just went to japan for holidays during the late Tokyo auto salon, saw on nissan suv's on display a new "option" which is 360° view on the inboard screen, so I think that the camera option in the mirrors was intended to this final goal.

That is not only an electronic gimmick, form what I understood the future of parking in japan (& already on some upscale Nissan, toyota/lexus & other big cars & SUV) is full assist parking ...:D so I guess that this plethora of camleras are also intended for this purpose :1:
jkster107
If they get the tech right, it'll be great to be able to see every side of your car from a top-down view. Last I saw, the image was still pretty distorted and made some sides look different from the others.

Parallel parking can be tricky if you can't see how close the curb or the guy in front of you is during the maneuver. I don't think it needs to go as far as parking the car automagically, but I am very seriously considering putting in a camera or distance sensors on the front bumper for my wife. She has a tendency to hang out in traffic a little far for my comfort.
