You will get lower mileage PERIOD. It is a matter of physics. Ethanol produces less energy than gasoline does.
A gallon of ethanol produces about 84,400 BTUs, E85 has 94,190 BTUs. However, a gallon of gasoline produces about 125,000 BTUs.
Gasohol (which is 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline) produces 120,900 BTUs.
You will always get lower fuel economy when ethanol is thrown into the mix. Add to that the fact that the distrobution of ethanol is expensive and there is a 51 cent subsidy on each gallon of it (coming out of your tax money) and that makes corn based ethanol a dumb deal.
Personally I like the idea of using ethanol, but not based on corn. You get an energy return of 1.2 to 1 when making ethanol from corn but you get an 8 to 1 return from sugar cane. Sugar cane whoops corn so badly that the farm lobby has pressed Congress very hard to keep a 67 cent tarriff on sugar cane based ethanol from Brazil.
Oh, and you can get a nearly 20 to 1 return when using cellulostic processes to make ethanol. However those manufacturing techniques are not ready for commercial use and may not be profitable for another decade. |

| I don't think they can produce it to meet demand hence the sudden gas price hike a month or so ago. I can't wait to get rid of this administration. |

You will get your wish.
Then everything will be wonderful.
Gas will be less than a dollar and ethanol won't be used.
It will be replaced with Unobtainium.
Right.
Keep your ^&%#^$#^ politics to your self.

Production capacity is part of it however the lack of any transportation infrastructure to support ethanol is the real problem.
If I leave the DFW area, gas drops almost 30 cents because they don't have to use the ethanol blend.
BTW, go look at your congressman before pointing fingers at the administration. The administration DOES deserve blame, but it was the congress that mandated a 10% ethanol blend as an oxygenate. |

Nothing wrong about blaming on the oily G.B family and his administration. Don't get me wrong, I totally support alternative energy. But, don't let them Bull Chiet! The number don't lies but the people who manipulate them does~ Why not sugar instead of corn, think about it.

Right back at ya, Homie. In some fairly recent posts, you've had no problem providing links to ultra-right-wing "news" websites to reinforce your political views about the oil industry. But the minute someone posts a view contrary to yours, you get all bent out of shape. I agree that politics have no place on this board. I just wish you would comply with the gentleman's agreement we have around here. |

Ok all you liberal left wing pinko tree hugging commies and all you conservative right wing big business gun toting nazis, hash it out here.
There used to be 2 things you don't want to talk about unless you want a fight, religion and politics. I recently found out there is a third...cell phones.
Remember, Marquis of Queensberry rules. |

Sugar cane does work better than Corn.
So why Corn?
Is it some sort of right wing plot?
Maybe.
How about telling us just how many acres are in sugar cane?
Or could be?
In the end, some ethanol WILL come from Sugar.
The car won't know.
There will be ethanol plants all over the place.
The ones here in Florida will "probably" use sugar cane.
At least they should.
OTOH, part of a large left wing plot has always been to subsidize the poor little sugar cane growers to make.....sugar.
Part of the large right wing plot is to possibly substitute switchgrass. It's easy to grow and will grow (warm Season) in a lot of places where you can't grow Sugar cane OR corn.

And just who started it with his accusation that I posted some Gasoline info based on "ultra right wing" "News" outlets and compared that to a direct political jab.
I'm not backing off.

I'm sorry, I cannot allow personal attacks, so I edited the thread above as part of mod duties. Views and opinions of politics are fine in this thread. Insulting (or the intent through use of suggestive words) others is not.
C'mon everyone lets just be friendly here and keep it as professional as you can make it.

Good job of policing and defusing the situation.

Glad (for once) I wasn't in this one....
That aside, if we can get all the lobbyists out of this (ha-ha) maybe we can grow more sugar cane, even though we don't have enough of the right climate real estate.
Thing of all the illegals we will need for the cane fields.......
The last time we tried this was back in the early 1800s, and you see what we got then! |
