There are presently 65,000 people in the US awaiting a kidney transplant. Some of them will receive organs from people who die in accidents. Some will receive kidneys from living donors. The rest will spend the rest of their lives requiring thrice-weekly dialysis treatments.
There are about 6,500 living kidney donors each year. A normal body has two kidneys, of which only one is required to keep you healthy. A healthy person can donate a kidney and after a relatively short period of recovery, live a perfectly normal life.
In 2002 I donated a kidney to my Mother. At the time there were few on-line resources for me to use to gather information. At lot has changed in the past few years. There are now several websites for potential donors faced with questions concerning the matching process, surgical procedure and recovery.
If you or anyone you know is considering donating a kidney to a loved one or a friend, please let them know there are plenty of on-line resources. One website in particular, www.livingdonorsonline.org , provides contacts to other people who have gone through the experience. I am a member of Living Donors Online and would gladly share my experiences.
Although this is the Murano forum, I hope you guys don't mind me posting this here.
Thanx,
