My Son killed my radio..... - Click HERE for Original Thread

2003 Murano

Ok, here it goes..... (by the way, Kick ass forum here)

My son decided to make my Bose 6 CD changer into a piggy bank and started putting dimes in the cassette player while I was cleaning my car.

Long story short, my wife used the car the next day and called me telling me that the radio was smoking.

After the smoke cleared, there was no sound. The display works and you could see the stations, CD tracks, volume level, but no sound. So I took it upon myself to remove the radio from the dash to take out any coins. No good. same thing. I did notice a dime in the circuit board behind the panel which may have shorted the radio or "something" .

I need help. I'm out of warrany. If it's the radio, then I will replace it, but I don't know if it's the amp or something else.

So my questions are:

- Where is the amp located so I could test it or replace it.

- What else can I check?

- Should I just replace the whole unit minus the amp?

- Where can I find a replacement radio? (cheap) (i checked ebay)

Thanks to everyone in advance.

Forgot to add this question:

- Is there a fuse I could check and replace?
Eric L.
The amp is actually behind the spare tire in the trunk area. Most likely the head unit short circuited, and your amp is fine.

I've seen BOSE head units on ebay, you might try that instead of the dealership.

Thank you for your reply.

When you say "head unit" , do you mean the radio?

Thanks for the diagram!

Yes, the radio part with all the buttons and knobs. The BOSE uses a non-amplified head unit, and the BOSE amp is actually in the trunk, behind the spare tire (and underneath the rear seat). So if the amp burned out, you'd get smoke coming from the back, not the head unit.
D2Krules
Thanks for the input. Now to find the head unit. You think they sell the front circuit panel only without the radio or do they need to sell the whole package (radio, cd player, etc)

I'm assuming it's the front panel circuitry that burnt out. Not the physical radio.
Corin
I agree with Eric, I think it is just the head unit that has a fried circuitboard. If you actually had smoke coming out of there, then that would NOT be a simple fuse job.

I also agree with the e-bay idea. Try to find a used one. Check junk yards in your area, or even as the dealer if they have one (or could get you one for cheap) that you could install yourself. OR, you could look for a completely different stereo to put in there, keeping in mind that you might want something that will interface properly with the screen and steering wheel controls.

And Eric, you should say that the amp is in FRONT of the spare tire, not behind. It's in the space between the rear seats and the spare tire (at least on the 03-05, there is some talk on another thread that the 06 moved it somewhere else but I don't remember exactly where).

If you have comprehensive insurance, you could have the dealer fix it. or any shop for that matter.
Comprehensive (At least mine) would cover it, less the deductible. I always carry $0 deductible on my comprehensive. It is cheap insurance.

Any insurance agent would understand the damage a son can do. At least up to the age of 30 or so.

Yeah, thats right. I was thinking about it from "looking into the trunk standing at the back" point of view. My bad!

Thanks for everyone for their input.

I'm still looking for a junk yard that has a murano but no luck, Ebay has Canada deals, and I'm scared in calling the dealer but now curious about the price.

Interesting Homer, I'm going to check about that insurance. I have FULL coverage, but don't know about the comprehensive. I'm in NJ.

I will keep everyone posted on my venture even if it is a boring one. =)

Thanks again.

Can someone tell me where the radio fuse is located. I'm curious. I just want to check it. I couldn't find it in the regular fuse box under the steering.

Thanks again!

Earlier in this thread.Eric L. posted a diagram indicating the location of the fuses.

Forgive my ignorance, I see 2 fuse boxes in that diagram, where are they located?

Thanks again.

The one depicted in the top-left of the diagram can be found in the interior of the car, behind a removable panel just above the hood-release handle.

The other panel, the one in the top-center of the diagram, can be found under the hood just to the left of the battery.

Happy hunting!

Thanks!

I checked all fuses and all are fine. Still looking for the radio. Called Nissan and they want $1200 for a new one. The junkyard dog site gave me 4 replies but all are $500 plus. I guess by next week i may just have to bite the bullet.

Tomorrow I'm bringing my car in for an estimate of a repair @ a nissan dealer.

I can't stand hearing myself think anymore while going on a 45 minute trip back and forth to work anymore!!!! Going nutz!

By the way, the diagnostics on the monochrome radio (non navigation) is hold the mute pause button and turn the volume knob around 30 clicks counter clock wise. Something i figured out the hard way.

There are some mail-service places on the web that work on BOSE stereos, esp for older Nissans. You might want to google for it and ask them whether they can fix the circuit board.
njjoe
Amazing!! Nissan wants $1,200 just for the BOSE radio head-unit.

If your insurance will pick up the tab then it is a no-brainer. If not, I would go with a unit from the salvage yards.

yeah, but.........isn't the head unit part and parcel with the Climate control system and who knows what else?
The point is, it's more than the front end of a radio.......

$500 from a junkyard is too much. I ran a junkyard in the past so I know. You will get a much better price if you look in the yellow pages and call them directly. I have also seen them on e-bay for less than $150 as well.

unless you make more than $500 an hour, I would hold off on biting the bullet and search for an hour or two... :4:

HERE IS A RADIO YOU CAN BUY FROM EBAY IN CASE YOU WANT TO REPLACE YOURS.

Thanks for all your replies!

I looked into that ebay auction item 3 days ago when it first hit. Unfortunately, it's from Canada, and it has no warranty, and he does not accept paypal.

I already contacted the seller to confirm all this (confirmed).

For my daily update: The car is currently in the dealer for an "estimate" and straight of the bat the technician manager said $445 just to take it out and send it to clarion to get it fixed. I said "not so fast!" I explained what it could be (the circuit board) and to make sure to put everything back how it was. Thanks to the knowledge from this board, i had ammunition to actually convince the guy that I knew something about this and he wasnt going to talk to me like i was an idiot.

I will keep everyone posted on this "boring" venture.
TheGymKid
Just another thought here... but this guy bought a crushed front end Murano on ebay... maybe you can contact him and ask if he would be interested in selling the radio part for cheap? (or any other parts you might want that kids seem to play with. :)

Good idea. I will send him a note.

Thanks.

I just got word from my insurance people and I do have comprehensive but my deductable is $500 and does not cover negligence. Which pretty much means I need to make a police report if it was "vandalism" and that will stay with the insurance record for 3 years.

Nice huh?

I just called the dealership and I got the "he is looking at it right now" line. You gotta love them.
D2Krules
Just picked up the car from the dealer.

And I qoute:

"Go to best buy or circuit city and ask them to sell you an aftermarket radio. It will be cheaper."

Sigh,

Now my only choice is to keep on looking on ebay and junk yards.
njjoe
Aftermarket radio!? And how the hell does he expect you to install it!?!

I first started this post in August 31st 2006. I want to thank everyone for their input. I just finally found a junk yard in Canada that had my radio. I know, it's Canada but enough is enough driving without a radio. My head phones were leaving my ears sore then the swap from music to telephone head set was killing me. Oh well. The radio is scheduled to come in by next Tuesday. Hopefully everything works well. The radio cost $500 from a junk yard.

I will keep everyone updated with my boring tale that hopefully will have a happy ending.

Good luck D2K! If you don't use the tape deck on the replacement, you might want to tape it over or put a cover on it, so your son doesn't treat it like a slot machine anymore. :p
Logansrun02
My 2 year old did the same thing, coins in the tape deck. The next thing I knew I could smell burning and see smoke coming from the radio. It plays all cd's but nothing comes out of the speakers. I pulled out the head unit as described and unplugged all the cables. Except I cannot get the black wire that is crimped on off. Does any one know how to remove this one? Also what then, do I take the hu to someone to fix or can I replace the radio with a newer one. Thanks for any help.

Logan -

Check out this site - http://www.videoservicestop.com/index.htm

They are much cheaper than a new OEM HU from the dealer. I think the going rate is <$200.

Good luck.

Thanks, this site has great information. I called them and they sound like the best source to fix the radio. Right now I just do not know if I should yank that black cable or how to take it off. I found this page on the forum http://www.murano04.org/ that has good pictures. The black cable is still plugged in in all the pictures. Do you know if I should just put some muscle into it and pull it out?

Are you referring to the antenna cable?

-njjoe
Logansrun02
Is that what it is? That makes sense. It looks like it is crimped on. The wire goes forwards and to the right towards the engine bay.
njjoe
Logansrun02-

I have never removed the radio from my MO, but from experience gained from removing about a dozen others (Ford, MG, Audi, Honda, GM, etc.) I would think the antenna wire can be removed from the back of the radio by pulling/twisting the connector where it joins the back of the radio.

If I am wrong I would appreciate if another member can post the correct procedure.

-njjoe
zebelkhan
That is the antenna cable. Twist and carefully pull on the cable. It will come off.

By the way, the reason it is in there so tight is because the engineers misprogrammed the assembly robot to tighten that and torque down the oil filter instead of the power steering rack....:D

(early MO owners will understand)
Logansrun02
Thank You for the help, it came out pretty quick last night when I pulled on it. You just never know and I have broken a few electrical connections. I went ahead and removed the amp and am sending both units back to http://www.videoservicestop.com today. I will update on how it all works out for the next guy with a kid who decides the tape deck is a coin machine.
