I picked one up a few weeks ago for $593 no tax, free shipping.
So far it's been great! Though the screen is only 3.5", I was looking for it for travel too, as it's very thin (little over an inch), compared to other Garmins and TomTom.
Great routing, excellent graphics, fast satellite pickup, and the text-to-speech capability is definite must have (instead of turn right in .3 miles, it says: turn right on Main St. in .3 miles), battery lasts 4 hours on a single charge..
I just used it to go to Montreal, and it was a lifesaver!
Gripes: the speaker could be louder, some POI are dated, and the windshield mount wouldn't stick, so I had to use the dashboard disk to mount the unit.
I give it a 9 out of 10. |

After a little more than two years, my Magellan Roadmate 700 started acting up...touch screen not responding and having trouble a few times with not acquiring satellites for long periods of time.
Fortunately, the one time I've gotten an extended warranty it has paid off. I took the Magellan back to Best Buy to see what could be done for it. The gal tells me they don't fix them once the manufacturers warranty is over, so go pick a new one. I was like, Really?! :)
So, I chose the Garmin Nuvi 350. WOW! This thing is great! It's so small, and so much better than the Roadmate when it comes to the maps, speed, and overall usability.
Here's one comparison...if I wanted to dim the screen manually on the Roadmate, I had to push a button, select a menu, scroll, select Display to be sure that the Auto Brightness was off, Save, choose Brightness, adjust it, Save, and then Cancel 3-4 times back to the map. On the Nuvi, you just press the power button one time, and you're in the menu to adjust the volume and brightness. Adjust, touch Done and your back to the map.
I do miss that you can't choose your routing options when selecting your destination, and that POI's, like restaurants and gas stations, don't have icons on the screen to be selected as you come across them.
The text-to-speech feature is great! And I love that it is so ultra-portable and has a battery...you can even use it while walking around.
I would highly recommend the Nuvi. It's so Simple! |
