Here is the new Nissan Qashqai, which will be available here in Europe from February 2007 on....four engines, gasoline 1.6 115HP and 2.0 140HP, diesel 1.5 106HP and 2.0 150HP, four gearboxes, five and six-speed manual, automatic ang guess what else...CVT.
It will be in the class where VW Golf is the leader here.

Thanx for the pics.
The Qashqai (I have no idea how to pronounce it) looks nice. I especially like the tower dash and panoramic roof. I was wondering why the controls are in English if the car has been designed for European sale.

English is becoming universal language in EU. I rented MB twice recently in Germany and controls were.............in English! |

| You're right Kris...because of many languages on all European cars there are mainly symbols used for everything...if not the words are in english. But on board computers, navigations and other equipment that uses displays, dot matrix displays and screens the language can be programmed to some of the main languages used here (english, german, french, italian,etc). But almost everyone in Europe speaks english or German. |

size is a relative term. For us MB C class is a small car. In Europe it is at least midsize sedan. So the Qashqai may prove popular in Europe. |

Never implied it wouldn't do well in Europe. I think it looks great (kind of a Renault front end, and the back was just copied from the old RX300).
I just wanted to head off any comments here with people saying "I will replace my MO with one of those!" before they even know the details. :D |

If it would do in Europe depends mostly of the price...both diesel engines are the right choice for Europe...but cars of this class are most sold and to compete with german, french, italian and also korean and japan cars is very hard. Nissan isn't quite a "real brand" here in this segment. Maybe 4x4 will attract some customers!
And yes, it's really only 169" long (VW Golf 166"). |

seems a little odd, but wont that step on the Murano's toes, at least in Europe. The Murano is a very small seller in the UK. Its unusal to have LWB versions of mid size cars/SUV/MPV in Europe. SEAT with the Altea and Altea XL and Renault with the Scenic and Grande Scenic are the only ones that spring to mind. |

From the looks of that "seven seater" Qashqai, they better include a chiropracter with the vehicle warranty cuz it looks mightly cramped to me. In my opinion, unless you've got a minivan, full size SUV, or large crossover (like a CX-9 or one of GM's Lambda platforms) the third row seat will be torture and essentially useless. Do you really want to put your kids in that tiny tiny row? |

ah yes, but you have to see this from a European perspective. I moved to Canada a couple of years ago, from the UK and the market for 'family cars' is very different
The roads are full of MPV (aka small mini-vans) like the Mazda 5. Renault, Ford, Citroen, VW, SEAT, GM, Honda and even Toyotoa have these MPV's and its a massive market. Quite a few of these have 7 seater versions. The trunk space is pitiful, but they do sell. Its what that particular market wants. The average family will not go for a full size mini-van like a Caravan in the UK as its too expensive. Large (by Euro standards) MPVs are around by Ford, VW, Renault, Peugeot, Fiat and others, but they have quite a premium price and quality when compared to rubbish here like the Windsar and Caravan.
CUV's are getting increasingly popular, but nothing like Canada. As you go bigger then SUVs, at least in the UK are having quite a backlash. Remember, the biggest SUV's you will normally see in UK are BMW x5, Mercs and Range Rovers.
When I told my family we'd bought a Mo, it was a good few weeks before anyone saw one on the road and they thought it was HUUUGGGGHHH :2:
Vehicles like Hummers and large Toytoa Landcruisers are rare and the big GM900 SUv's arent even sold.
Now, having been in Canada a couple of years, I completely understand where your coming from + gas is cheaper (yes, still cheaper!) which is a deciding factor in the size/class of a car purchased
Some of this might be why we get the Rouge and Europe gets the Qashqai (pronounced something like Cash-kee) |
