Gas Mileage Comparison - Click HERE for Original Thread

After taking the same trip out to the British Columbia interior(Kooteny region) just this past weekend -earlier trip was in July, I did some fuel consumption comparisons. Here are the results. After my first trip I switched over to Mobil 1 synthetic oil and a Hurricane high flow air filter. I use premium fuel full time. The only difference was the second trip I had 2 passengers with luggage so I figure an extra 400lbs. in weight. The second trip I had 35psi in the rear tires and 34psi in the front. The first trip I had 33psi all around. The total mileage for the trip is 1450kms.(900 miles).

1st trip- average 29.4 imp. mpg, (24.4 u.s. mpg), or 9.56L/100kms
2nd trip- average 30.1 imp. mpg, (25.0 u.s. mpg), or 9.43L/100kms

So, there is an improvement in mileage, even with the extra weight, however it is small. My Mo now has 14725kms. (9144 miles) on it. Just about to the 10,000 mile area where I have read in this forum that the VQ engine starts it's break in period.....

That's a 2.4% improvement in reported fuel efficiency. Was it the Mobil 1, Hurricane filter, tire pressure or a more broken-in engine? My guess is that it was a combination of all four with an emphasis on a more broken-in engine.

I forgot to include my speed - average 105km/hr (65mph) and no more than 110km/hr (68mph) unless passing of course - on both trips...

Thats about right as my 03 MO can give me 8.7-9.0 Lts /100 Km from Calgary to Kamloops, that at 100 Km/hr. All that on Midrange fuel, the only time I found that premium fuel helps is when I pull my trailer.

At what speed were you travelling?.

i just did a 1800 km journey from Saskatoon --> edmonton > jasper > banff > calgary > saskatoon

i filled with premium with these features already in use for over a year
- mobil 1
- k&n air filter
-k&n oil filter
- 33,35,33,37 psi

and in the journey were 4 adults and a baby... and trunk fully loaded....

first gas tank gave me about 550 km.... but after that i was getting about 720 km per tank....

average speed was about 107 -- 110 km/hr.

was very much satisfied with overall performance of Mo......

Sounds like a nice sightseeing trip, glad to hear you are getting great gas mileage with a full Mo.

Your engine is broken in I take it- how many kms. on it now?

Did you notice improvements in performance when you switched over to the filters,etc.?:2:

well, i just hit 50,000 km on this trip. when i switched my filters (both at same time) i couldnt get a chance to drive mo on a hwy until late summer last year. but even then, i did noticed some improvement in city driving conditions.... but on hwy much better economy.... but i switched over from regular to mid grade this spring and to supereme just at the start of august. so i would say there wasnt just one factor for better economy, lots of minor things get together to make this much improvement....

The one factor that I find changes gas mileage considerably is out side temperature hot weather = better gas mileage could be a variety of factors air density better fuel evaporation fuel temperature volume correction (at pump)

Muranos like it hot !

just picked up new 06 SL my second MO first was 03 sl
