My friend just got an 06 MO.... we noticed that none of his store bought CDs display song/artist title.
This was after we pressed the DISP button... nothing. Just "Title" and "CD title" (or something like that) was displayed but no data beyond that.
I was going to try a CD in my 03 see if it works then try the same in his MO.
Any ideas? |

| Very few commercial CD's have the embedded title data. Try either a home burned CD that you know has the info, or a commercial CD that you know has the info. |

That's why nearly all CD's have to be looked up on CDDB when you rip in itunes. A shame, really. |

| So here is a silly question, if it can look up the data on CDDB what exactly is the information on the CD being sent to retrieve from the CDDB and why can't that data from the CD be displayed? |

It's my understanding that it a combination of the number of songs, the length of each, and maybe some type of checksum(or a variation on this) that has a uniqueness that allow for the matching. Ever noticed that sometimes that when you put an old or not popular CD it, most player will give you a choice of 2-5 albums.
Audio CD are an analog recording stored digitally, where as MP3/WMA are digital recording stored digitally. (Yes, they are not totally digitally, but you get my meaning). |

Good question. I'd never really thought about it before, but here's what wikipedie says (confirming the post above.)
