I am really not a driving enthusiast and am certainly new to the CVT but I have been driving cars for many years and have a question about braking. This could all be in my head but is it possible that when I brake as I come to a stop sign or something, the engine sort of lurches forward very briefly and very softly? Almost like the engine is continuing to go forward while the brakes are applied. The possible problem is that this is not happening upon immediately pressing the brake. For example I press the brake at time 0 and the car begins to slow. 2 seconds later I feel a little "jilt" of the engine as I brake though I continue slowing down. That "jilt" lasts for half a second and then everything is normal. It is not happening all the time (if even at all - as I said, it may just be in my head) and doesn't seem to impact my braking ability.
The car is less than a month old so I hope it is not a problem. Has anyone else experienced this before? Is it normal? Should I be worried?
Thanks in advance. |

gadgetfreak-
It sounds normal for the MO. It is most likely the torque converter lock-up disengaging as the MO slows to a stop.
As you press the brake the car begins to slow down. The engine is still under load as it continues to turn the transmission. At a certain point the car's computer will disengage the torque converter lock-up clutch, freeing the engine from the load of the tranny, and the engine will momentarily (but ever so slightly) rev-up. This is normal.

njjoe hit it on the head. If you search for torque converter you will find many posts. I think I posted one when I purchased my MO too.
Its normal behavior. |

| Agreed - like joe and gonzo said - its the torque converter lockup disengaging. In most cars, the torque converter locks up at between 35-45mph, but the CVT is unique in that it allows lockup at speeds below 20mph. So you will feel the "nudge" at that magic speed (17-18mph) as you are braking. |

| Thank you all for the responses. You have certainly alleviated my concerns. I will go and continue enjoying my new MO. |

HI,
I have MO 06 white color SL model. I just posted the same question like yours. Please see below.
My 06 MO SL has been driven for a month. It's seem everything fine. As I learn, the car goes smoothly without gear moment. Well, I found out when I am in traffic ( like stop often ),
I still can feel a bit gear moment under 20m/h. Is that normal??
As the result, torque converter is what we concerned. |

Its the torque converter unlocking. Perfectly normal. |

HI Eric,
Thanks for your answer.
I've other question I like to ask you. Please see below.
You know every time I park ( shift is on P) my car, my right hand can feel a " click ".
Or, when I star engine, I hit foot brake and right hand can feel
" click " on the shift. Is that normal??
***Recently, I found out the fuel gauge has some weird moment. Normally after we refill the fuel tank, the gauge needle would move from E to F immediately. However, my car did not move like that. I see the needle move fine, but it did not reach F. It takes about few minutes to reach F. At beginning, I thought I did not fill tank fully. Beside, the needle always move slightly while my driving.
Did someone find out that weird moment?? |

The click is the "shift lock" mechanism that prevents you from shifting into and out of park unless your foot is on the brake. Every automatic car has it, but you cannot always hear the click.
As for the fuel guage, yeah, Nissan's move kind of slow. It takes a few minutes for mine to reach F as well. |

HI Eric,
I just filled my tank this morning. I figure out something that the fuel gauge did not reach F for sure shown on first picture. However, when I turn off engine after couple second shown on second picture, and I turn back on just electronic, it reach F. When I hit gas acceleration or braking, turning, it goes down show on third picture. I just do not know how Nissan design this function. It really makes me confuse after I fill the gas. Please click below link to my pictures that I made this morning.

| A slow reading gas guage after a fillup is normal (a few minutes) but one that fluctuates so much when accelerating or braking is not normal. If you can demonstrate this to the dealer, have them fix it (but make sure you actually show them the problem in action). |

Noticed a duplicate post in this thread, here is a link to further discussion of the fuel guage needle.

kwang927 - everyone here is happy to help, but try to keep thread topics together (makes it easier for people to find the same information in the future if they have a similar problem) |
