Yesterday evening I drug my wife out to look at a "new" car to replace her 97 Sentra with. Her poor Sentra has seen better days when it comes to door dings and twice being hailed pretty severely. It only has 60k miles on it and has never seen any repair--ever--so we can't really justify trading it.
The wifey hates to spend money, seriously guys, she hates credit cards! (gotta love her :) )
Anywaaaaaaaaaayz...
We took the Tucson out for a spin last night. It has a V6 with 235HP. The review I had read about it was dead on. Pretty peppy!
The transmission was a little sluggish about shifting.
It was a very quiet car, almost on par with the Mo.
Nice suspension, cornered well yet rode nicely over potholes.
Kind of a cheapy interior, but not too bad.
The instuments were layed out nicely although the Mo's are way better IMHO.
The sound system was superior to my stock Mo's.
The rear glass opens independantly from the gate, nice for quicky toss ins.
I liked it.
what do you think? It's 4K under Kelly BB.

Not bad. Take it for another spin. About a half hour or so, then crawl up under it and check for bleeding.
Want me to give Jim Samson and Spot a call to see if they can do better on one? ;) |

Considering that a new 2007 Tuscan with a V-6 and auto tranny goes for about $21,000, your "deal" is pretty decent. Seeing that the dealer is advertising the price at $16,995, you can most definitely negotiate several hundred dollars from his asking price.
Good luck.

My Brother In Law has the KIA twin to that car, a Sportage.
He really likes it. Personally I found it to be lacking in just a few areas.
1. The passenger "oh ****" handle keeps getting pulled out by his wife. He puts it back in and inevitably, when we go golfing I grab it and pop it out again. Give the thing a good tug while negotiating, it may save you some loot.
2. I drove it a few times, it is really underpowered, he has the smaller 4 cylinder engine so that's not really a factor for you.
3. The cargo area is not wide enough to put the golf bags in with the drivers (golf club) inside the bag. You cannot get a foursome with clubs into the car. (at least not comfortably)
That said, for a second car, with a V6, looks like a good deal. |

It is half of what I paid for the Murano! What a deal!
If your wife likes it go for it! |

Getting the wifey out of her Sentra is going to be tough.
I'm afraid of something a little more substantial than a bicycle will whack her in the drivers door one day and injure her badly, if not kill her. The Tucson has a 5 star front/side crash rating. It has side curtains and a side seat bag as well.
Kris should know 141 here well. She commutes on it for up to 10 miles daily one way. Lots of scarey crashes on that road; it's a 55mph road with no median in many parts. This is what is pushing me to push her to get a more substantial vehicle. The Sentra is a great car and will probably last another 10 years easily. Without anti lock brakes and a very flimsy body, it is a death trap for this road.
I'll do what Unca says and do the bleed check. Of course the salesman told us we may not see it again if we did not act within a day or two--the wifey says, yeah, right. He knew better than to say it to me. :)
Thank you guys for your input. |

Ye, 141 is an interesting road. I drive out there from time to time. More often on Peachtree Industrial though...
Good luck with the Tucson... |

I would have to "DRUG" my wife too to get her to go car shopping with me. - LOL
As far as the Tuscan goes, I have seen them but have never owned one.
I was in a similar predicament a couple of years ago, when my wife wanted to trade the Mazda for a Minivan (we just had our second child). My wife was insistent on getting a minivan. After spending alot of time looking at the different choices. I decided to get the 2003 Kia Sedona EX. Loaded including a roof mount DVD - except leather, which she didn't want. Since we were buying a minivan, what difference does it make what brand it is.
My buying points:
- Kia is owned by Hyundai
- 10yr/100,000 mile drive train warranty.
- More options for the price
In the three years and 30,000+ miles that we have owned it, these are my comments.
- Gas mileage is pretty bad, 13-15 mpg on avg.
- Radio failed - replaced under warranty, second one is acting up.
- Alternator failed (but so has the Mo's) - replaced under warranty. TBS was issued on this as well, but no recall?
- Front wheel bearing just went - replaced under warranty. The dealer said that the seal went which caused the problem.
- Replaced Hancook tires at 23,000 miles - sidewall bubble formed on two tires (not covered under warranty). My guess is that 1) the tires are horrible and 2) the van is extremely heavy, which is how they get the 5 star crash rating - by placing more steel in the doors. BTW, replaced with GY's and they are great - just like my Mo's.
- The seat has horrible support. It''s like buying a cheap mattress - I can feel the springs.
- Rust forming under front grill sides - still need to ask dealer if it is covered.
- Rides very load. Not the tires, just the outside wind/vehicle noise.
- The suspension - I'm not impressed.
All in all, I would not buy a Kia again. Although I have not had major problems with this yet, I guess I just expected more. IMO, I think they compromise quality of the vehicle by putting most of the money in the engine and drive train to ensure that it will last the warranty. The resale value is horrible. I know a lot has changed in 3 years and the new Sedonas look really nice and offer a lot of features, but their price has gone up alot as well.
On a good note, the service dept. at Commonwealth Motors has been exceptional and that alone would make me buy another car at that dealer that also sells Chevy, Honda, etc.
I am trying to convince my wife to buy another Murano, but she wants something with 3 rows of seats. |

| Was it the Tuson you drove?? With 230HP you sure it wasn't the new Santa Fe? |

PS,
Almost forgot - I also had to replace the brakes and rotors at 28,000 miles. I could have turned the rotors but didn't want to take the chance since they warped so easily. Again, probably because of the weight of this vehicle. |

If it's got more than <>175 HP it's a Santa Fe.
New (2007) Santa Fe has 242HP IIRC.

Homer is right. The Tuscan's 2.7 liter V-6 has 173 horsepower (@ 6,000 rpm).

Well, the wifey got her Tucson tonight.
It is a 2006, but only 15 miles on it. It has everything, heated seats, a sub, 6 disc in dash CD changer, sun roof, electronic stability control, 4 wheel disk.
It's silver like my Mo. We got it for around 19k, not bad. She opted for the bumper to bumper 10year/100k warranty for $17 bucks more a month, that was a deal.
Tires for life, etc etc.
The wifey is pretty happy :D |

Congratulations!
I hope you, and more importantly SHE will be happy! |

She is right here reading this, she says, "Thank you Kris!".
:D
I just spent a couple hours detailing the new car. Vinylex wipes are God's gift to door seals. I'm gonna have to experiment with the plastic body stuff, they are dark metalic silver. I think it has sat outside for a year or so, so it shows it in some places. But I have the outside trim just about cherry. Gave the interior a good dash of vinylex as well, it sucked it up. I think I heard it say thank you.
I tell ya, the smooth lines of the Mo make it sooooo much easier to detail. This one will take twice as long to wash and every bit of 3X to wax. |
