Mr3Putt-
That's a good article. Thanx for posting it.
I always had my suspicions about CARFAX and wondered how they got their data.
CAFAX is a nice idea; too bad their process is flawed.

Well, I would think that there are enough accusations of fraud, etc in this article to require action from Carfax if the accusations are not true.
The article does tend to go overboard.
Only an idiot would presuppose that a Carfax Report would, or should, or could, show ALL, on every car.
Should be interesting to see what Carfax does.
If they don't do anything.......... they would sure look guilty.
OTOH quoting little pissant companies out of Austin who claim to be a national company (except their web site says "serves the greater Austin area"......) sure doesn't give me a real good feeling that Consumeraffairs.com has any integrity either.
Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Insurance companies are not a source of their's?? Wow. How many other good sources are there?
What about all the people that don't file police reports, settle minor accidents amongst themselves, pay garages cash off the books, etc.??
Growing up, my family wasn't weathy, but my dad always stressed he wouldn't by used cars.. to avoid a headache. He'd rather buy a new Hyundai Excel than a used Camry for the same price. The Camry probably still would last longer, but it was the peace of mind he had from NEW. Good or bad, I'll pass this on to my child.:p |

hey guys/gals
I have been a carfax subscriber for the past 2 monthes as I am on the hunt for a 1999-2001 subaru impreza 2.5 RS coupe with low kms. I have to subscribe because it is such a rare car that it can appear at anytime. I have come across a few that interested me, but unfortunatly the first two had too high km's for my liking and the 3rd was interesting because I located it in Whitby, about 2.5 hours drive from my location. It had 116 000 km's extra clean/lady driven/ and everything else they will tell you to sell a used car. After running the Carfax, I found that this car was clean, no problems....etc. Perfect! ( Mind you I would never buy a car without having a subaru mechanic look at it, the carfax is just there for some extra comfort) After talking to the Subaru dealer on the phone, he was honest enough to tell me that this car had been in an accident and taking alot of rear end damage! Carfax knew nothing of this...As for Carfax's response to articles to this..I keep getting emails to register my used car with them if the VIN shows up clean, and if the car does infact have a rough history (accident/rollback..) then carfax will buy the car back from you..no questions asked (so they say..)
Cheers
Kocioblue...
PS..If any of you have a low milege RS coupe you wanna sell me..and dont live in like california or alaska..give me a shout! |

| Before I bought my new Murano last year, I looked at serveral used SUVs on local papers and had the Carfax for a week or so. Just for my curiosity, I checked my own 87 Integra to see if there was anything on it. The only record I found was a change of registration from PA to NJ when I moved. I had a rear-end accident which resulted in police report and insurance claim of about $1000 in 95, but that didn't show. Nothing on any services or nor state inspections. At that point, I realized Carfax was probably useless. |

| Carfax did not mention the accident I had in my previous Miata.. Note I got the free report when I saw the Miata on the dealers website (when it was exchanged for Mo). At the time I was skeptical and just thought the *free* version might not contain all details. Now I'm not so sure the benefit of this service. |

UNLESS they sue and win a finding of fraud agains them. They sound guilty as Hell.
I hope the word gets out and that a reputable and honest company replaces them. |
