New Murano Owner - A couple of questions - Click HERE for Original Thread
Beng
Hello Everyone, Just picked up a 2004 Murano SE and had a couple of questions that I was hoping to get some answers to.

First, does the AWD lock button it self have a light? When I tuen on the awd lock, there is a light on the instrument clster, but no on the switch, like the heated seats.

Second, has anyone here had any success in getting Nissan to repair/replace the leather steering wheel. Mine is really worn out on the top of the wheel and on the left side.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your new MO.

Let's see... The AWD Lock switch does not have a built-in light. At first glance it looks like it may have, but it does not.

My guess is the dealer is not equipped to replace the leather on your steering wheel. You would most likely have to have the steering wheel replaced. The MSRP for the steering wheel is... hold on to your hat.... $767.71. Have you considered an aftermarket wrap?

Holly Cow! That's what that steering has got to be made of for Nissan to ask that much money. Yeah, I thought of an aftermarket wrap, but wanted to stay as original as possible. Might have to go to some dealerships and try to get them to cover it under warranty.

Thanks for the awd info.

I, too, was surprised to learn how much the steering wheel was. Check with your local dealer. Hopefully you can get it for less if they can reuse your airbag.

Did the $700 price include the airbag? If so can the wheel be bought without an airbag, cruise control switches and audio switches. My problem is that the smooth leather surface is worn off.

Nissan likely won't do much.
The wheel was obviously not cared for.

Your best bet IMO is a good leather shop.
Still likely talking a good bit of money, but you could sure get a nice wheel out of it.........

I believe it did. Check with you local dealer to be sure.

The "wheelskins" brand of steering wheel wrap is pretty nice and of high quality. If you sew it on *very* tight, it has a factory look. I have the one with perforated leather, in black and dark blue two tone, on my MO and I think it looks great. Took me about three hours though, and lots of cursing, to sew the thing on tight enough so that the seams look "factory tight." Your fingertips will be sore for a few days afterwards.

Hello EricL,

Have you posted any pictures of your wheelskins mod? If so, can you direct me to it, or if not post some pics? Also, did you remove the old stock wrap before putting the wheelskins on?
Eric L.
Here is a picture, but it doesn't show the blue that well. The flash makes it look bright blue but in fact its a dark blue (that looks black). Its like how on a blue car can "sparkle" in the sun and look a lighter shade of blue, but in fact is still dark blue.

Its installed over the stock cover. Gives the wheel a nice thick "BMW" feel.

Eric, good job. Did you put the wheelskin cover on top of the original leather cover? I have been thinking of putting a leather cover on my S steering wheel which is not leather covered. The only thing I wasn't sure is how well it would cover the two bumps at 10 and 2 o'clock positions. I thought it might look too aftermarketish.

Yes its over the stock leather cover. You just have to sew those stitches on *very* tight over the bumps at 10 and 2.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the good info. In the end, I went back to the dealership and they hooked me up with a company they use to repair leather surfaces. Not sure how they did it, but my steering wheel looks new(ish) again (I say ish because the metal trim on the bottom of the wheel has a few dings in it)

I noticed a group buy forum, has anyone every tried to set up a group buy for replacement alum trim pieces? I'd try doing something but they really rip us Canadian's off for parts. The steering wheel sans airbag and switches was $1200 at my local dealership!

I am glad it worked out. Do you believe the cost was reasonable?

Speaking of unreasonable... I can not image a steering wheel costing $1,200 (Can) unless it was on a fighter jet or the lunar rover. If you were to assemble a MO from scratch using parts obtained from the dealer I am sure the total cost would be well over $100,000.

I think the cost was ~ $50. They told me that the person who fixed it cleaned it and then re-dyed it. I was told to let it set for 2-3 weeks before applying any oils or conditioners.

Yup $1200 for a steering wheel is just whacked! If this didn't turn out, I was going to go the wheelskin way.
