Has anyone seen the commercial for the "Advanced Parking Guidance System" that is available as an option on the 2007 Lexus LS?
The following excerpt is from the Lexus website: The Advanced Parking Guidance System can help the driver parallel park or back the vehicle into a parking space. The driver need only confirm the desired parking space and apply the brakes when required.
Now that is slick. I wonder if you can use it when you go for your driver's test.
Does anyone have any additional info on this feature?
The LS also comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

I read somewhere joe that the auto parking doesn't work very well.
From memory;
You have to pull up past the spot (of course) and then hit a button.
The screen will show a box and if it doesn't you haven't pulled up far enough.....or the spot isn;t big enuf.....
then you put the car in reverse and keep your foot on the brake allowing the car to backup, cut and turn very slowly.
After it pulls in, it does not pull up and it leaves you too far from the curb to pass a drivers test........used to be 6" in NJ.......
Whoever it was reviewing the car said it was a great deal but leave the auto park unchecked. :)
as to the tranny, I don't remember seeing that.

PS My Murano Tranny has at least 8,000 speeds.:2: |

Toyota first came out with the "automatic parking" system in the JDM Prius, but I think the one in the LS is the first one available in the US.
Yeah its an 8-speed automatic for the normal V8, but the upcoming hybrid LS600h will likely have Toyota's electronic variable planetary "CVT" (not really a CVT per se, but equivalent). |

Not true, Homer! If I remember correctly, our CVT "only" has 250 or so positions for the pulleys. :p |

"There's a little button on the bottom of the screen that looks like a car parking. Hit it. If the spot is more than 6.5 feet longer than the car itself, the car enters Advanced Parking Guidance System mode. This is where the magic happens."
More than 6.5 feet longer than the car??????
Jeesh, you could PULL into a spot 6.5 feet longer than the car.... |

In what American city are there parallel parking spaces 6.5 longer than a LS? :D |

Only 3 that I can think of......
1. Mayberry NC
2. Hooterville (implied to be in or very near Illinois)
3. Springfield USA |

True about Hooterville. Saw that one space when I was making a phone call from the top of the telephone pole this morning. :D :D :D |

| I go to try it. It works wonderfully. However I cannot even remember going into a parallell parking space. Everything around here is "Hash" parking |

I used to be one of the worlds greatest parallel parkers.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.........in a place called Mt Holly, I went to get my drivers license.
I had practiced and practiced. And had been driving on farms for several years.
Everything went swimmingly.
As we finished up, the Driving Inspector told me to parallel park between the cones out front of the DMV.
So, I did.
When I got back in my Dad's car, he asked me why I had parked the car..... and then moved it, hitting the curb?
I told him what had happened.
I pulled up, put it in reverse, cut the wheels to the right, moved backwards and as the front of my car cleared the cone I reversed the wheel to the left and straightened it out, I then pulled forward a couple of feet until I was centered n the spot.
The inspector opened the door looked out and said
"Can you get it a little closer?"
"Yes sir" I replied, and backed over the curb.
"You damned fool, my Dad said.
You had it perfect, He was just checking whether it was luck or if you really knew what you were doing. You should have just said, No sir, it is legally parked there is no reason to move it closer."
I spent the next two weeks parking and being grilled by my dad about how far I was from the curb.
The next Time I did it perfect (again) and the guy......didn't ask me anything.
Now I can't parallel park.
My system requires a certain "rhythm". And when I try it with the Murano, the PS pump craps out and messes me up. Th PS pump is a known issue and Nissan refuses to fix it.
As Eric says, if I had a spot 6.5 feet longer than the Murano I would just pull in.
Not so many parallel parking spots anymore........
Overall, with Auto parking, Auto Transmission, Traction control, auto AWD, Dynamic this and that......I would have to say that many people are not drivers.
They are just steerers.
Having said that, I wouldn't mind having the LS as a second car.
Homer
Oh and a place where you can STILL parallel park (Albeit with NEVER 6.5 feet longer than ANY car much less an LS)?
Mt Holly NJ. And you get to do it on a hill. ;) |

| The trick I learned for parallel parking is to first pull even with the car in front of the space (this is the #1 mistake people make - by not pulling ahead enough). Then while backing up, as soon as your rear wheel is lined up with the rear bumper of that car, you begin to turn full lock. Begin straightening up until you reach 45 degrees, then full opposite lock. If the space is large enough to fit the car, you get a decent parallel parking job on the first try, everytime. Sometimes I rush (if there is a lot of traffic) and I have to try again (grrr). |

Homer-
Excellent story! Parallel parking for your drivers license was always a scary event. No guy ever wanted to fail that. I took my test in a 1970 Ford LTD, a real land cruiser, and I am happy to say I passed.
I always thought parallel parking was a very good test of a new driver's skills. Braking, steering, light application of the gas pedal, judging distance, handling pressure, close quarters, etc. I just love when you pull up next to a car and see the sidewalls on the passenger-side tires all chewed to hell. :2:

I did my driver test in the middle of winter in Pullman, WA (small college town). Snow banks all over the place. People generally park a couple feet away from the curb to avoid their passengers having to step into the snow.
So, for my test, which I did in my father's Blazer, I ended up hitting the snow bank. But the instructor didn't care. He only cared that I knew HOW, not that I did it perfectly. Didn't even take any points off for it. |

I guess that explains why people park the way they do in Seattle. :2:

| Nearly all of the spots in our town are parallel parking. I can park the Mo this way as simply as if it were a Swift. The backup camera makes it even easier, it's almost like cheating. The lines on the display show you where you are aimed, basically foolproof. No problem with my PS pump at all, I could parallel park all day long as far as I can tell. |

yep...
Washington (well, really the entire US) is WAY too relaxed about letting people drive. They need to make it a LOT harder to get a license. Any idiot is able to get behind the wheel. |

Maybe mm didn't know about the revised steering pump in 05+ models. |

Or maybe my point was that there is no problem with my PS pump when it comes to parallel parking.
Harsh. I'd say sorry if I offended you, but... |

Homer,
Indeed, a great story. I also recall the infamous 3 point turn. Although this is not a difficult feat with the small cars these days, it was known to be quite a challenging task with my dad's old LTD - AKA "the BOAT". This thing was more like a cruise liner and was nearly impossible to turn in the opposite direction without taking out a mailbox or something. Particularly, since the driving instructor would select the most narrow street in town for one to perform this task.
Ah, the memories....
