I'm trying to take off the aluminim covers around the steering wheel radio controls (need to check the connections). I've been prying at them to the point where I'm worried about breaking them, and nothing happens. They're held in there very securely.
Only thing I can find in the shop manual is under "Driver Airbag Module" on page SRS-37 which states "Remove the side lids" as the first step to removing the airbag.
Any ideas on how to get this bloody thing off? |

hey corin,
i don't think you can take those aluminum covers off. when the manual mention side lids, they are referring the bolt covers. see item #4 in the illustration. |

Okay Corin,
You got me curious, what is the plan? |

The "PLAN" was one of two options:
1) Check all the connections to the switch and clean / re-connect them to try to fix my intermittent issue of them not working.
2) If step 1 didn't work, disconnect a wire on the switch, go to the dealership so that they can "see" it not working (avoid their BS of claiming everything is fine because it works when they try), schedule an appointment to replace the switch and wiring, then re-connect the switch before taking it into the dealer.
(some would say that step 2 is dishonest, but I've tried to get the dealership to fix this problem twice now, and both times they refuse to believe that it doesn't work. If they have no respect for me, why should I respect them?) |

| When the intermittent problem occurs, is it on all controls? If so, it may be the spring loaded contact from the steering wheel to the column. |

Right on.
It's called fighting fire with fire.

Volume button does it the most. Channel up/down does it sometimes. Mode and power always seem to work.
I think it's the switch or the wiring. Or the connection between the switch and the wiring. I just can't easily get to it. |
