Is there a way to keep the Nav system fully functional when driving.

When driving several functions of the Nav system are disabled for safety purposes, after all we don't want people typing in addresses while driving.

However if there is a passenger in the front I would like them to be able to insert addresses and such.

If there is something out there on this please let me know the key words to search it as I have not been able to find anything.

Thanks

Welcome to the site.

This issue has been addressed, and unfortunately there seems to be no workaround.

An old member did devise a system to stop the "nag screen" that greets you every time you start the car, search "no nag", you will find it.

My aftermarket unit lets me set up the passenger as a user and this avoids the "disabling of the programming while moving" feature.

I agree, you should be able to operate the NAV system on the fly. If it's any consolation, I don't think any factory system allows it.

Sorry Mr3Putt, but you are incorrect...There IS a solution to this issue, and I've installed it and use the feature almost every day.

Install took less than an hour:

Thanks for the response. "Nav while moving" so simple yet didn't think of it.

I can't believe you guys are attempting something as dangerous as using the NAV controls while driving. ;) There must be a good reason for Nissan to protect you against doing something as dangerous at that. In fact, if you look in the owners manual you will see the following regarding the HVAC controls. :2:

Although I agree that any kind of distraction while driving is dangerous, I think, no I am sure, Nissan's warning is really to protect their own a$$..........:2:

This limitation is only in place because of the litigous nature of U.S. Society, and has virtually nothing to do with any real danger...I've used Navigation system in vehicles in Europe and there is no such limitation to inputting into the Nav unit while driving.

Also, it's idiotic that the front seat passenger has no ability to use the Nav system to it's fullest while moving.

Anyway, problem solved on my part, because I hacked the Nav as posted above and love the new "features" I've been using for over a year on my Nav.

I was thinking the simple fix for NIssan would be that when the passenger side airbag is engaged (ie there is something heavy in the passenger seat like a person) the Nav system is then fully active again.

I was hoping for something like this but no.

Don't be afraid to do this modification BigRed...It's really not that hard at all. I put my on/off override switch directly under the radio, mounting it into the underside area with the plastic cover (not the side with the little light).

I will be getting an '07 SL with nav in a few weeks and was wondering about something.

After the nav sets a routing to your destination, what happens if along the way you run into a detour and can't continue on the prescribed route? Will the nav automatically re-route you when it sees you turning off of the designated route, or what?
TexInFla
Yep....the NAV system automatically re-routes you if you deviate from the path it's set for you. Sometimes, it's insistent that you go back to the original path, but eventually it will give up and chart a new path.

I was concerned that it may just think that I strayed off the route it wants me to take and direct me back to it. If if does that, is there any way to easily override that, forcing it to provide an alternate route?
TexInFla
My experience is that it depends on how much detail is available for your area. If you live in an urban area, for example, that is well represented on the DVD, then the system will find other ways to route you to your destination. If the area you're in doesn't have a lot of detail available to the system, then you'll either find the system trying to get you back to the original plan or will just go silent until you get to an area with roads that are on the map.

You can override the system, but you'll have to pull over to do that. To override the system, just enter a waypoint or tell it to avoid certain roads, and it should recalculate things for you.

Fair enough - and thanks.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned requesting a detour by now. If you're coming up on a traffic jam, you can hit the Route button, choose Edit Route, then Detour, and then choose the distance on the current route you want to bypass. YMMV, though, as it will occasionally say an alternate route cannot be found.

Also, if you want to change your destination while driving and know generally where on the map you want to go, or even have the destination stored in your Address Book, then you are in luck. Change the navigation view to flat, and you are free to select a new destination while moving. Use the joystick and zoom levels to pan around to locate your destination. Once you have your destination indicated, click Enter, and then "Set destination". Click Ok to calculate the route, and change the view back to Bird View.

It can be a little bit of a pain, but once you're used to how far the crosshairs move at each zoom level, you really can hit any location you want. Can't use *all* of the system functions, but at least you can set a destination by panning around the map.

That is neato, sure wish I had know about that before.
