RX300 Outside Air Temp - Click HERE for Original Thread
Gonzo
Off topic regarding my Wife's Lexus RX300.

Lately the outside air temp reading suddenly went from being fairly accurate to reading 25°F too high.

OK I though the sensor must be bad. So I diconnected it and it had no impact on the display reading while disconnected.

Either what I diconnect was NOT the OAT or something else is wrong. I saw a sensor in the front of the car simliar to the MO and assumed that it was the OAT sensor.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I just purchased the Service manual via Ebay but have not recieve the link to download it yet.

Any suggestions/thoughts would be appreciated.

It's hard to say for certain, but my guess is that you did disconnect the OAT but since it was defective it had no influence on the display.

1) Disconnect the suspected sensor with the vehicle turned off, then turn it on. See if the indication is dashed out etc. after this.

2) Create some heat on the suspected sensor, with friction or by some other means, to see if you can get the temp to increase, then you know you've found the right sensor.

It does sound like the sensor.

Take it to Lexus, pay your $1000 to have them diagnose that it is indeed the sensor, then pay them $10,000 to replace the $2 part.

At least Lexus would be able to locate the problem and repair it.

Your typical Nissan dealer would claim there was nothing wrong because there were no codes in the computer and he was unable to duplicate the problem. He would then ask you to bring your MO back if the problem was recurring. Then if you pointed out to him that the temperature in the shop was in fact 75 degrees and not the 100 indicated on the display he would proceed to tell you that the inaccurate reading was normal and that all new MOs acted like that.

Very very true. I would laugh at this, except from my own experience I know this is NOT an exaggeration and it is NOT funny when it happens. I hate Nissan service. See my other posts on the thread today about "would you buy a MO again".

Thanks I would have expected the reading to hold at a set value but it read the same as with the sensor attached or not. Further more that value does appear to change, it seems that it just doesn't go any lower than 70°F. Its odd. I would have thought removing the sensor would have resulted in a "-" or a set value but it read exactly the same at various tempuratures.

I will see how much the sensor costs and perhaps try to swap it myself.

I would go back to square one and try to absolutely determine that you pulled the right sensor.

At this point, you'll most likely be changing the sensor either way, yourself or a mechanic. When you get the sensor in your hand, you will know if the one you've been disconnecting is the right one.

I am suspicious that you've been disconnecting the right one, either you lose indication with it disconnected, (after cycling power on the vehicle with it disconnected) or you will be able to get the indication to increase by artificially heating it in some way.

You'd mentioned that it does fluctuate, about 25 degrees higher than the real temp, so this means that you should get it to increase with induced heat if you're on the right sensor. Good luck!

Thanks fellas, here is the story. I did have the correct sensor, I was able to purchase a service manual from Ebay.... here is what I over looked and so did others. Its good to know becuase I would expect the Murano would behave the same if the temp sensor fails.

The reason that the temp value didn't change when I disconnect the sensor was becuase I didn't give it enough time. As you know it only samples from the sensor every XX seconds.

So when I replace the sensor with a new one ($24) it was 50° outside. When I first turn the car to ON it still read 74°! I started to think... what the %@#%. What else could it be... then after about 20 seconds it started to drop.... about 5°... and kept dropping over time to the current temp.

Bingo that was it sensor was bad and it needed time to display.

So keep that in mind if you ever replace the sensor on the MO.
