In previously reported cases here, either the transmission or transfer case leaked oil prior to failing. Not all of them do it, but if it does leak, you can bet it will fail sometime soon.

Elerico,
only God can tell it. Seriously. Nobody knows what everything will fail......

As to the intention of your questions - Eric explained it well enough. I would advise do a good visual inspection. It always helps. Look for obvious things - leakage, cracks etc. Also listen for unusual noises....

My 03 MO has 94000 Km on it and I am having the CVT checked out tomorrow, only because I am nearing the end of the warranty. Instead of changing the tranny oil Nissan now plugs it into a computer for a read out. The tech at my dealer and I had coffee to discuss my upcoming appt. and he indicated that since the MO's have come out he has never seen the CVT oil changed out.

Nissan has stated that unless the CVT oil shows a reading above 25000(no units) they do not recommend changing the oil. The tech told me that the highest reading they had seen on any Mo has been 1700 (no units). In fact if they did change out the oil alot of techs would like to see how it is done. The most interesting info the tech told, was about the paper filter for the oil, there is no part number for it. He also indicated that they attempted to calculate how much it would cost (flat rate) to over haul a CVT vs. replacement in kind, it is still more cost effective at this time to RIK the cvt instead of over hauling.

In regards to what everyone else has been saying about the xfer case, I to check it out for leaks at regular intervals after a I found a leak 30000Km ago and had the gasket replaced.

Stoker-

You are lucky. It sounds like you have found yourself an honest, straight-talking Nissan dealer. A rare find, indeed.

There is no part number for the filter because it is a standard, off-the-shelf part.... literally. It is a white, basket-type coffee filter. It is used to capture any debris that may come out of the radiator-mounted cooler during the cleaning process.

Got my work done yesterday and the only problem was the fact that the tech I talk to before going in, really wanted to do the work. Unfortunately a emergency work came in for a out of twn MO who had puntured his fuel tank ( no shields),the work took most of the day and the tech who was to do my Mo got the fuel tank replacement call.

Work was not done until I showed up at 1500, however, serpentine belt replaced and the CVT fluid number is 12129 (no units) and a note that no change is required till 210,000 (again no units). The engineer in me really wants to see units as I like to deal in facts, not make facts out of fiction, like some professionals do.

I placed a call to Nissan.ca and they recommended that I get the dealer to call the tech line and talk to the techs at Nissan HQ. so I will attempt to get this solved as I do not know why they do not want to let me know. I guess I am just curious.

Thanks for the post stoker - I'm sure most folks here would love to hear what the mystery CVT number means.
Kris
Stoker

thanks for info. I am too curious what does this number mean.

Anyway it seems that you still have 1.5M kilometers CVT fluid life left! I simply cannot believe it. Unless the scale is not linear or the deterioration rate is exponential....

I would love to know what do they actually measure... :8:

I would suspect that the number is related to contamination rather than actual deterioration. It is a synthetic of some sort, and will probably last "forever" if it stays clean.

Had another talk with the service manager and tech and they are going to try and get answers to my questions. In regards to the CVT fluid, the SM just returned from a CDN meeting about Nissan cars and part of the discussions was around the CVT. As Nissan is putting into more cars, it appears that no one has been able to figure out how long the fluid will last as it is synethitic, at present they are still recommending a oil change at 210000, however, depending on what Nissan is seeeing with these checks that number could be adjusted. Seeing how the test is free (at least at my dealership) I will be doing this on a yearly basis.

I still come from the old school when it comes to taking care of mechaincal things, I do realize that things change and that effects maintenace stratagy's for mechaincal equipment so this I will watch with great interest
