2007 SL under invoice - Click HERE for Original Thread
jmcguire56
With the help of carbuyingtips.com and the "fax attack" technique from fightingchance.com I got the following car:

2007 SL AWD
Touring w/XM
Nav
Dynamic Control
Cargo area protector
Floor mats
Splash guards
Sunroof deflector
Destination

Then first dealer offered me invoice minus holdback (2.75% or $988).
A closer dealer was shocked that anyone offered me holdback money but came back with $1000 under invoice, $34,937. I went in to meet them and the deal came down to what they were going to give me for my 10 year old VW. They offered me $1900 which was KBB and honestly more than what I expected based on its condition and 112k miles. I could have walked out and hoped for a better deal from another dealer in the next few days as the end of month is approaching. But I honestly felt the deal wasn't going to get better. Regardless, the deal I got was within the budget I set going into this process. So I felt I got a great deal. I was really surprised that any dealer offered me holdback money.

Hi, jmcguire. Good move! I will check out that site you used for strategies.
I was browsing Edmunds forums for a Suby Legacy GT wagon since our next car mite be a lease.
Did you buy using their finance or some other method? Darrell.
jmcguire56
Darrell,

I went with Nissan's 2.9% financing for 60 months. The fax attack works. Just be patient. I started out the week going for the Murano. I waited a day or so and didn't get the response I wanted. I gave up and on Thursday did a fax attack for the Honda Pilot. One dealer offered me $3977 under invoice for a Pilot EX-L 4wd with nav. Then Friday I got a call from a Nissan dealer offering me the SL invoice minus holdback. Then Friday night another dealer called and offered me invoice. When I told her I had an offer for invoice minus holdback the sales rep was really surprised and told me if she could do better she would call me back. 10 minutes later the phone rang and I got an offer for $1000 under invoice. Now I know they're making money on this deal otherwise they wouldn't make it. But I'll never buy a car again without using this technique. It is truly eye opening!

Thanks for response, jmc. I will remember your strategies. We have reamed ourselves in the past few years concerning buying cars/motorcycles.
We mite lease our next car. Probably after my wife finishes college and we decide whether we will move locally, Southern Oregon, or near Portland, OR.
PS. What area of country do you live in? :) Darrell.
jmcguire56
Darrell, I'm in the Northeast.

This deal hasn't been completed. I have serious concerns that this deal will be completed.

First off, I don't have anything in writing except for numerous assurances from the sales rep and sales manager that they're giving me the car for $1000 under cost. I know, I shouldn't have walked out of the dealership Saturday without it in writing. I got a handshake and a verbal agreement that I would get the car $1000 under cost. My concern is that they may play games with the "cost" numbers.

Second, they are swapping with a dealer in New Hampshire to get my car. It was supposed to be here Tuesday. I got a call from my rep saying the New Hampshire dealer wanted to swap another car. So I won't be getting the car until Wednesday. I'm worried that they are going to invent another excuse tomorrow, string me along until Feb 1 and then take away any "end of month" leverage I have with any other dealer.

Now if they actually get the car into the dealership, I wouldn't expect them to play games after going through the hassle of getting the car all the way from New Hampshire to Connecticut.

But make no mistake, I am absolutely prepared to walk out. I have made that clear to them.

More to follow.
Corin
I hate dealers that play games like that. Good that you're prepared to walk. You shouldn't be giving up too much of your advantage. I think most dealers have gotten away from the "month end" thing because too many customers have caught on. I think many have offset their month start/end dates to counteract that system.
Corin
By the way, remember that they DID go to the trouble to get that car there, so if they DO start playing games, you can use that card to your advantage. Of course, they'll try to guilt you by saying "but we worked really hard and lost money by getting this particular car for you" but you can turn right around and let them know that it could be a complete waste of their time and money if you decide not to buy because they didn't keep their agreement.

If nothing is in writing, then technically they don't owe you one thing. But that also means that you don't owe THEM anything either.
jmcguire56
Thanks Corin. Hopefully I'll have good news to share later today.

Good luck. I hope it works out for ya. I only lease now because I HATE dealing with dealerships and salesmen. So much easier. And cheaper.

What part of Connecticut are you in? I used to live in Enfield, just south of the MA state line...
jmcguire56
Thank BNK. I'm in Stratford.

Just got off the phone with the sales manager. The car will be at the dealership "any minute". He specifically said he needs to move this car today and that there won't be any surprises on the price. Stay tuned.

Him JMN. Hope you do ok. This is much better than watching TV. Darrell.:1:

Believe it or not, but I am rooting for you. I truly hope the dealer comes through with his part of the bargain. It's just that it all seems so scripted. Let us know how it plays out.

Good luck.

They must remove their honesty as the first step in the hiring process and replace it with deceit.
dborla01
Hi, jmc. We finished dinner and wife and I are upstairs discussing your impending purchase/no purchase.
Let us know the details. :) Darrell.
jmcguire56
I GOT IT!!!!!

No surprises...no problems....except having to wait awhile to get the F&I guy.

Two lessons learned tonight

1. Make sure you know your numbers before going to see F&I. HE didn't know that Nissan had 2.9% financing and put in 7.25%. I told him to check that again, of course I was right.

2. If picking up your new car at night, bring a flashlight. I brought a min mag light to do the walkaround. I found some adhesive left on a bumper and had them bring the car back into the detail shop.

Otherwise so far so good!!!
Corin
Awesome!!! Congrats!!!

Sounds like you got one of the VERY rare dealers that is relatively honest! Very interested to see how they do on the service side the first time you have to take it in (hopefully just for routine maintenance, knock on wood).

Yes, checking out the vehicle before taking possession is critical. Smart move with the flashlight.

So, tomorrow you'll have to take a few pictures and post it up on a new thread so we can see!

(as I'm sure you've read on here, be prepared for some aching cheek muscles as your grin gets bigger and bigger over the next couple days!)

Congrats. I learned alot from reading your "Car buying tips" site. Did you pay their $34.00 fee or just use their advice? Darrell. :D
jmcguire56
Darrell,
I paid fightingchance.com for the information and as far as I'm concerned, worth every penny!

If I had gone with the Honda Pilot, I would have gotten it for $3977 under invoice.
jmcguire56
Here it is.....

Good deal. Only thing I've seen better is the family discount for Nissan employees. :D

Awesome color! You mite want to try a multiple step wax job on it as weather warms up. There are many tips here and elsewhere concerning that super wet look.
I used a similar technique from the Yamaha FZ-1 site and sold m/c's and our Murano, looking better than just a simple wax job. Your car makes me want to go get another Murano! :p Darrell.
BNKrust
Sweeeeet... glad everything worked out for ya. I love that color. Trying to talk my wife into Merlot instead of Platinum... I have this maroon fetish thing... :D

Congrats!
jmcguire56
Well I've had the MO just over 2 weeks. Wow, its awesome. Aside from some quirky (in my opinion) heating controls, I can't find one thing to complain about. Its runs great, looks great, just a super vehicle. Nicest care I've ever owned.
