Dealer service question - Click HERE for Original Thread
jmcguire56
How can I find out if there are any complaints about a Nissan dealer's service department? I called Nissan and they said they couldn't give me any info on the phone but I can look it up on their website. I checked that I have no idea where that information is.

I have one dealer killing another on service and I want to check it out. I have checked the BBB and there are some complaints against one of the dealers but only one pertains to service. I have also checked my state's Dept of Consumer Protection website but didn't find anything there either.

Any help would be appreciated.

jmcguire56-

There is one, sure-fire way to determine if the Nissan dealer in question has had any complaints about their service department. It is plain as day. When driving up to the dealer, see if there is a large sign that reads "NISSAN" hanging over the doors. If there is then there is a damn good chance they have been guilty of providing poor customer service.

When rated nationally on it's service levels Nissan has consistently ranked very close to the bottom of the pack. Is any one dealer better than another? Sure, but that is like going into a whorehouse and asking if any one girl is cleaner than the others.

Checking with the BBB and Dept of Consumer Protection, like you did, is probably a good way to get an idea of their service level. However, if no one reports a problem that does not necessarily mean there aren't any. Consumers have come to expect so little from car dealers that they have lowered their expectations and accept sub-par service.

Ask around. Ask friends and co-workers where they take their Nissans and ask about their experiences.

Good luck.

Jmcguire56- what do you mean-

"I have one dealer killing another on service and I want to check it out."

Nissans site does show which dealers have received the "award of excellence" FOR WHATEVER THATS WORTH.

Joe,
Thanks for those nuggets...I started laughing out load when you mentioned the whorehouse.

Tmnjmurano,
What I meant was that one sales manager spoke quite negatively of another dealers service department. That sales manager's dealership does have an "Award of Excellence".

That sales manager even told me to call Nissan and check out the record of both service departments. When I called Nissan this morning, the customer service rep I spoke to said he doesn't have that kind of information but it is on nissanusa.com. I haven't found anything on their website mentioned services issues at any dealership.

Any time ANY customer "service" department tries the old "I don't have that information, but you can find it on our website.", challenge them to walk you through getting to that information.

They won't do it. It does not exist.

Just another facet of the ancient "fogbank" defense.

I'm not aware of any other dealer info on Nissans site.

I service them where I buy them. You'd think they have a vested interest in keeping you happy. On a new car its usually routine scheduled service anyway. As long as you're not dealing with a store thats trying to upsell you everytime you take it in for an oil change. If any thing major goes wrong your best defense is to research the problem as well as the fix and ask for the most experienced tech they have on staff in that particular area.

Thank you for your input guys. I'm starting to believe, based on talking to other people, that the sales manager who accused the other dealer of shoddy service is to quote a coworker "a scumbag".

Be very leery of Nissan's "Award of Excelellence" in regard to their service departments. My dealer has "won" one every year for quite a number of years. So, a normally thinking person would think, "Wow, they must be pretty good to get them awards every year!" Wrong! The first time I went to the service department, the Service Manager handed me a survey and said, "If there's ANY REASON WHATSOEVER that you can't give us a superior rating, please let me know and I'll make it right." No problem. The service that had been performed was very minor, I was happy and sent in a good survey. The next time, I had words with the Service Manger over bad service. To make a long story short, I have never been given a survey again! The surveys are apparently only given to customers who have no complaints about their service. The last time I was there, as I was standing in front of the cashier, I saw the Service Manager's reflection as he stood behind me, telling the cashier not to give me a survey. Subtle, huh?

I've been driving for over 40 years and while the Murano is the best vehicle that I've ever owned, Nissan's is the worst dealership network I've ever dealt with!
