According to this Edmunds post, the VDC in the FJ Cruiser switches off when 4WD is engaged. Seems stupid to me - you absolutely want stability control under slippery conditions that warranty 4WD!

Think about it my friend, when you are truly in conditions that warrant 4WD (dirt, sand, gravel, etc.) you don't want stability control nor even ABS. The algorithms used on stability control systems are based on conditions that exist when driving on pavement. It has also been proven that ABS will actually extend your stopping distances when used on snow, sand and gravel.

| I agree with Joe. For real off roading ABS and VDC are actually handicap. FJ is designed to go almost extreme off road. So for me this is logical that the dynamic stability control is off when 4WD is engaged. |

While that is true, I would argue that 4WD LO is appropriate for VDC off, but not 4WD HI, which is the case for the FJ.
And most people don't offroad, but some do drive in the snow, where 4WD HI is very useful. I would not like to be faced with the choice of either RWD with VDC, or 4WD without VDC, if I had to venture out on the road after a fresh snowfall.
In retrospect, the MO's automatic AWD with VDC is the perfect compromise. |
