Well I've been wanting to see and hear for myself what differences a CAI would make on my MO. Having read all the posts here on CAI's and learning that there would be no performance gains I had my reservations about taking the time to do it and spending the money on it. After looking at all the options I found a cheaper alternative to the Injen CAI from Cosmo Racing so I thought I would give it a try.
Cosmo Racing Website
They offer a a knock off of the Injen CAI that uses the stock air mass sensor. I was also interested in trying to use the stock air box as I had already purchased a drop in K+N filter.
CAI Kit
I ordered the part thru their web site. and received it in about 8 days. I had ordered and was invoiced for a red one but they sent chrome. Not a big deal.
Shortram and stock airbox
My first part of the project was to try to use the short RAM and the stock air box which is possible with the help of one of the stock accordion boots.
This change produced the following.
No change in idle noise
Increased sucking sound and growl when revving the engine.
A little extra growl under hard acceleration.
Less engine bog on the first 20 ft of acceleration.
I'm going to drive with the short ram for a while and then put on the full CAI to see what difference it makes.

Hey Mattsmo:
I was curious about the intake you got. I know that the injen brand has a spot on the long tube to insert the stock air sensor and I can't seem to find any info on any other intake that has that. Did the cosmo have the same pre-drilled holes and slot for the sensor that the injen has or do you just toss the sensor aside. Using it as a short ram with the stock box, as you did, solves that problem but in full CAI mode how did you solve that problem if any.
Thanks |

The Cosmo CAI uses the stock air flow sensor housing instead of having a machined area on the long tube. If you look at the pics in my gallery there is a black piece with a gasket that attaches to the air flow sensot housing.
Hope that helps. |

Thanks. Stupid me. After I posted I looked at all of your pics, good job by the way, and noticed the gasket. That explains why some of the intakes are in two parts and some are not. How has the quality of the Cosmo been so far and do you like it. I had ordered the injen IS CAI but the company that runs most of the parts suppliers on the web shows you a picture of a unit that does not fit in a Murano. They tell you it fits because it looks cooler than all the other intakes but it will only work on the Titan V8 engine. Much hassles and many returns later I am thinking of going with the Cosmo.
Thanks again. |

| How hard was the install? Can you scan the install sheets? Just wondering what all I have to take off to install this thing. |

| Sorry it took so long to reply. I just installed mine the other day. I chose to do the full intake instead of the short ram. Instructions come with the intake as well as the filter and connectors. You do need to go out and buy a K & N filter recharge kit before you install the intake though. They run about 20.00 at any major auto store. If you only do half of the system like Mattsmo did you should look at the pics he has in his gallery. If you do the full CAI like I did you need to remove the old plastic intake tube, the AMS sensor, air filter container, and the resonator that is in the fender. It sounds like a lot but it is pretty easy. The resinator is accessed through the drivers side wheel well pop out panel. If you buy a CAI get it from www.cosmoracing.com. There is another company called OEM parts wharehouse and they own about 98% of all online auto parts supply sites. They show a few CAI units that they claim will fit your car, but in fact, do not. The injen unit is the worst culprit because it sounds like such a cool unit in its description and it is, if you own a V8 Titan or Armada. The injen unit that will be shipped to you will be about the same as any other intake, except it will cost you 280.00 more. Almost forgot the most important thing. If you do the full intake the short tube needs to have an inch to an inch and a quarter cut off of it. That or request a shorter AMS adapter from Cosmo when you order. I had to cut mine and if you don't have the right tools you could be in for a bit of a fight. I emailed Cosmo to see if this was an 06/07 problem only or if it applied to all Mo's but I haven't heard back yet. If I can figure out the gallery thing I'll post some pics. |

I posted another thread in the forum about getting it for $247 shipped. I was torn between the Cosmo and the Injen. In the end I went with the Injen just on a gut feeling...and of course a deal on it :) |

| $247 is too much. I pretty much see all intakes as the same, a filter on a stick. |

Hey Hilbe:
I hope you didn't order the injen because you think you're going to get that cool Power Flow stainless steel box. All the websites that post that picture are misrepresenting the product. You can check directly with injen, that unit is for V8 engines only. They do not make that unit for the Murano or any other small engine for that fact. The only difference between the injen and every other intake on the market is that the AMS sensor housing is built into the short ram end of the upper pipe. It is still a split tube with a gasket in between and a cone filter on the end. As I stated in my previous post, almost all of the online dealers are the same shop and they all say that the injen Power Flow W/B stands for with box. In fact the W/B stands for wrinkle black, the other color that the intake comes in. Don't waste a month and a half like I did placing several orders with multiple companies expecting to get the power flow box. If you got it for that reason then cancel your order if you can. If you want proof go to www.injen.com and look up the power flow units. It is clearly posted that they do not make one for the Murano's. It is sad because it would look fantastic under the hood. |

I didn't make the mistake. I knew the Injen was not the powerflow box. This is very similar to the one I got on the Maxima. I like the wrinkle black finish since it matches the engine. I will be attempting the install this weekend. Did anyone have to take the bumper off to put in the CAI? The pictures Injen provided show it with the bumper off.
P.S. If someone could post the Cosmo instructions, that would be great. |
