I've got an 04 MO and since about 50K during cold starts the engine has made a squeeling noise coming from the front left side.
It now has 60K, and the dealership says the serpentine belts need replacing. Is this normal for the age and milage and is $200 a fair replacement cost?
Thanks |

Which side did you say the noise is coming from? The belts (2) are located on the far right (passenger-side) of the engine compartment.
Is replacement "normal" for your age and mileage? Let's put it this way, it is not abnormal. One of the largest manufacturers of automotive belts, Gates, recommends inspection at 60,000 miles and changing serpentine belts every four years, regardless of appearance. So you are probably on the early side of the replacement window.
There are two belts on the MO and each costs less than $20 at your local auto parts store. So you are paying about $150 in labor, and $10 for tax and misc, fees. That would be about right.

| that's where the noise is coming from. My car is only at 37282 miles. I'm having it done, but seems premature. Other than that, the car has been flawless |

If the noise is because the belts are slipping, you should be able to adjust the tension in the belts. The belts may need replacement but rubber belts don't make noise unless they are slipping on the pulleys. |

ok thanks. The noise goes away after the belts warm up. They're replacing them today, so I'll see the old belts tonight.
again. at the mercy of the dealership and the tech. |

I am confused. Your first post indicated the noise started at "50K" miles. You go on to say it now has "60K" miles.
Then in your second post of the day you claim your car is at "37282 miles".
Which is it?

| A little late but I agree with the posts above - its a loose accessory "serpentine" belt - it might not need to be replaced but rather just tightened. In either case it should be checked out. |

In Canada we go by kilometers. My car has 60000km which is 37000 miles.
The belts were replaced. The larger one had small cracks all the way around it so it needed to be replaced anyhow |

Thanx for the clarification, phishfan, I should have picked up on that one. :1pat:
I am glad your MO is no longer a squealer.
