Not interested in having a fiberglass one built? You can put a better sub in it with more power handling.
SIM
PM sent!

It would have to fit in the same spot. More power than the JL Audio, I can agree to that, but better audio? Hmmm, not sure about that one... :)

JL Audio is certainly one of the most reknowned company for the sound quality that they deliver. I am not into rap bang-bang and I don't need to expand my luggage room by thumping the tailgate. What I want is a deeper and richer bass, not 600 watts RMS bass to bury my 100 watts mids and tweeters. What I mean is that 200 watts RMS of JL Audio would be plenty enough power and refinement for my Bose system and my ears.
SIM
BTW, I used to have a Infinity Basslink with an output of 200 watts RMS in the back of my 2004 and I was very satisfied with the sound quality. The only problem was that it was taking 1/4 of my trunk's usable space.

hey i am interested......
how much with shipping?
Insane Asylum
do we know a price yet? I am considering buying one right now, so a group buy would make my decision that much easier.

As I told SIM, the Jl can only handle 150 watts. You can have a fiberglass one built in or do it yourself(I can get you a walk through), or I can and have a better sub in it. There is plenty of room for a 10" under the panel when you remove the storage bin. Enough to get a JL 10w7 if you want it. Even though I would deffinitly suggest a different sub, not saying the JL is bad but for less money you can get one that can handle more power and sound better.

For those interested, I inquired with JL Audio about the Stealthbox and the full-size spare and it seems that they would possibly be too close for comfort according to:

Steve Duffield
JL Audio, Technical Support Manager
954-443-1100 ext.2268

Looks like the box was designed this way because the JL Audio engineering team ignored that there were 2 different spare config for the MO.

xconcepts
SIM- that does look to close with the full spare. Are you going to go with the fiberglass?
SIM
xconcepts,

Yes I will but I am still trying to get all the info about the parts that I need (pricing, etc...) to do this project. I will contact you soon. Your concept is the best that I've seen so far and your information is very useful and adequate.

SIM,

I'm interested. The aesthetics of the JL product is really what wins for me. IF I could have the JL aethetics, but a better woofer (something like an Image Dynamics IDQ-10 or something) I'd be all over that... for a reasonable price, of course. :)

Jeff,

Speak with xconcept. He has THE solution, both economical and much more fficient than the JL. And you can always carpet your box afterward although since the design I want fits under the stock side cover so there is no real need to do it.
SliderJeff
Will do. Thanks, SIM!

Has anyone heard the Stealthbox yet. It seems to me with a down firing sub covered with the little panel thing would sound muffled and cause more rattling since the bass is being pounded directly into the cars floor.

As soon as I get some time I am going to build fiberglass box firing up (but with protection for sub). Will post pictures when it gets done.
xconcepts
Krush- thats why I mentioned to SIM and Jeff to look into a fiberglass box. Mine was built ported over the wheelwell.
SliderJeff
xconcepts,

Thanks for the PM and the replies here. Do you have any pics of your custom fiberglass box. I'm not completely understanding what yours looks like vs. the JL Audio one from your description. I want a box that is:

1.) Totally stealth

2.) Downfiring, or at least with a completely unexposed woofer such that I can still use my Nissan cargo mat and carry groceries, drywall, lumber/whatever like I have so far.

3.) Equipped with a much better woofer than the JL Audio one... most likely an Image Dynamics IDQ10 or IDQ12.

4.) Great on sound QUALITY while not necessarily drowning out the rappers thumpwagon at the stop light next to me.

I listen to METAL and some jazz/fusion. So I need uber tight kicks when the double bass kicks in and it feels like I am driving over the "lane turtles" that separate one lane from another here in Houston. :)

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff- mine looks nothing like the JL stealth since my sub is a 12", weights 40lbs and I wanted ported. Mine is above the cargo bin and covers the left wheelwell. The vinyl I used to cover it was kind of bad but the enclosure is 2.3^3 @31 for the port.

Now I can make a totally stealth enclosure where the cargo bin is, either side. But, downfiring would be very difficult since the fiberglass would be on the bottom to get a base, removable though. It would be easier and sound better firing up. Which would still be covered by the cargo bin cover. Might rattle the cover up a few times depending on the power you give it :D

Deffinitly can be equiped with a better sub, I measured mine for SIM and I could get a 10" in there with no problem.

Your SQ would depend on the sub and amount of power you are giving it.

Is there any interest here for a member that knows how to work with fiberglass in making a custom "stealthbox" that uses a better woofer at a cheaper price than the JL Audio solution? I would be interested in buying if there was another option.

Guys,

I have the JL Audio Stealthbox with a JL Audio Slash 250/1v2 driving it. That's a 250W amp. The Stealthbox sounds great and the Slash 250 doesn't overdrive it. And believe me......I like to crank it!! ;)

The clean, custom fit of the Stealthbox makes it a great choice IMHO.

Cheers!

I liked the idea of the Stealth but then decided to build my own with fiberglass and MDF. I like the clean punch that the bass puts out with the open faced sub without too much rumbling around in the trunk. The back side of the box is made with fiberglass and was moulded to the wheel well then built up to wrap towards the rear hatch forming the curve. The top; face; bottom and far end was made using 3/4" MDF and finished on the face with Roasted Oak in a natural finish with laquer. The Sub is a 10" Energy (makers of Klipsch speakers). I can fit my hockey equipment bag in still and also fits golf bag w/clubs. I can also quickly remove it by unpluging the banana plugs at the far end and lift it out with the handle if I need the full trunk.

I made a "stealth box" and mounted my amps between the spare tire and the floor so I have full access to the entire trunk, all the time. It also looks stock except for the little plexi window but I have a little cover to protect the window from stuff sliding/scratching the plexi when stuff is back there. I also throw in on when I park somewhere where there might be a window lookyloo.

krush - that looks sweet! Interested in making a copy of that box and selling it (minus the woofer)?

I like the big box from BikerJon also, but I want to keep the factory look and all of the space in the back needs to be available.
krush40
I'm kinda tight on time right now and wouldn't be able to work on it for a while.

But. . .

The box only works well because I built a new floor and have a speaker grille built in so the sound can travel through the floor without being muffled. If you used the regular floor it wouldnt sound as good.

Making the box is really quite easier than it looks. It doesn't require very much fiberglassing. It is more wood working than fiberglassing. I can try to help you if you have any questions.
