Just want to share a bad experience today i had with my MO. Here in NJ, we are having a heavy rain/snow fall. Whilst driving in this weather and the windshield wipers in operation,..... all of a sudden they got stuck and would not move.
Imagine being blinded in the middle of this heavy rain+snow mix on a highway . As it was clear ice and rain mix, i did have some visibility though....stopped on the hard shoulder 2/3 times in order to budge them free of the ice but no luck. Luckily i was only few miles away from my home and with great caution was able to get home.
i left the car in the garage for an hour and than checked again. Guess what...they worked as if nothing had happen :3:

I guess you need to keep your defogger/heat going and it might be time to get a set of Silblades!
Silblades are silicone wipers which themselves don't freeze - although they can still freeze to the windshield if there is enough water/ice I guess. I've never seen wipers freeze once they've been going though - its coming back to a frozen car that you have to be careful. |

I was driving in the same wet stuff today and had no problems at all with the wipers.
Like Eric L. said earlier, wipers don't usually freeze once they are moving.
My guess is that you may have had an unusually large build-up of wet snow at the bottom edge of the windshield and the wipers were encountering a lot of resistance on the bottom end of their cycle. That could cause the motor to overheat and shut down to protect itself. Once it cooled off it was back in operation.
