Anyone had their door handle break off????
I was getting in my car last week, and the handle broke off in my hand. It's been at the dealer all day, and they just called to ask if anyone had given me an estimate.
That has me a bit worried - any clue on how much this is going to cost me?

| Outside - driver's side. It just broke off in my hand when I was opening the door. |

A-
The handle itself lists for ~$80. The labor (remove inside door trim & door panel, replace handle, re-assemble) could be an hour or two. Total cost may be in the ballpark of $350. That's just a WAG.
There was a thread here a year or so ago where someone claimed they saw a body-shop tech remove the outside handle from the outside of the car. If that is the case then the labor cost goes down significantly.
Let us know what you find out.

Um..... wow. Sure, labor to replace goes down, but theft goes UP!
With my '81 rabbit, I could remove the driver handle and unlock the car through the hole in about 15 seconds if I had the right screwdriver (long-handled small philips). Did that MANY times when I locked my keys inside.
But that was an '81 rabbit. Yellow to boot. And looked VERY much like a high-schooler's car. I don't want that same "feature" on my MO... |

Well, it wasn't too bad.
$243 for the new handle and the labor to remove the inside door panel and the replace the handle.
Of course, I had them change the windshield wipers while they had it, and the tech broke the rear one...so that means another trip back once it arrives.
Thanks for your help...I slept much better last night knowing it wasn't going to be a $1,000 job.
