Extension Cable for Display Screen?? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Has anyone been able to find or create an extension cable for the orange display screen. I'm looking to move mine and I thought someone may have already done this. I'm looking for an aprox. 6-foot cable extension.

Thanks

It's been done. I have seen photos on this forum of an orange screen that was relocated in front of the open space under the HVAC controls. I can not recall who did it but it was a very slick mod. A color panel was installed where the orange screen originally resided.

Good luck.

Your right NJ, I think it was Z. I PM'd him for advise. I couldn't find anything specific on related threads from his carputer project.

Your were right, it was z-man (zebelkhan). Check out his gallery. He has a dozen or so pics showing the installation.

Are you planning on installing a carputer also?

I'm not going to do the carputer right away, but I hope to eventually. What I want to do it replace the OEM screen with a new video or touch screen. At the least, I want to hook up my ipod video to it and possible a rear camera.

I don't have a sunroof, so I was planning on moving the OEM screen to the roof versus the lower console. Similar to the this:

I will have to extend the harness up to the roof, which will be about 4 to 6 feet. That is why I need the extension.

Any thoughts?

Hey biggun,

That is an awsome location for the OEM display. For what you have in mind, you don't even have to take it apart (like I did to make it fit)

I responded to your pm but everyone else's benefit, here it is again:

When I was doing this I could not find an extension cable, or even replacement connectors. They may exist now so you may be able to just create an extension cable that plugs right in. But back then I had do it the hard way.

what I did was to cut the wires a few inches from the connector and then extend the wires by a couple of feet using same gauge wire I bought at radioshack, and then solder the connector back on. There are somewhere ere around 15 to 20 wires (I forget since it was a long time ago) so to keep them from getting mixed up I did one wire at a time. In other words, cut one wire, solder the extension, solder it back to the connector, insulate it with shrink wrap, go to the next wire.

Keep in mind that when you are done, you will have some thick cable on your hands.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Z!

However, that is NOT what I was hoping for. I do not get a warm and fuzzy feeling inside about cutting the harness, let alone 15 to 20 wires. However, it sounds like it may lead to that because I haven't found anything yet, regarding a connection adaptor.

Do you remember what gauge wire they are?

I know. I had a hard time cutting into the harness too and that is probably the only thing I ever did to my MO that is non-reversable, but you will get over it....:D

The OEM wires I think were 18 or 22. I believe I went with 18 for the extension.

I guess if I were to go to that extreme of cutting my harness then this could be another option. This is extreme, but with so many possibilities.

I like it.......!

I read on another forum of an owner using cat5 wire to splice into the nav wiring. If we are taking 15-20 wires to splice, than I will only need 3 or 4 each of cat5 wires. That doesn't sound as bad when you look at it that way.

Anyone have any thoughts on using cat 5 wire?

Cat5 has much smaller gauge. You still have to cut and splice all of the wires inside (all 15 or 20) so it would not make a difference on the labor. I vote for regular copper wire!

I guess I was just thinking that it would bundle up easier to go up the A-pillar. Also, the encasement would be much neater.
