engine immobilizer shuts down - Click HERE for Original Thread
djmurano
Greetings!
My 2003 Murano SE engine immobilizer shuts down all electrical feed and I cannot start the car. However, when I pop the hood and close it back somehow resets the system and it allows me to start the car like nothing happened. Nissan service told me they cannot replicate the problem and says the immobilizer is ok. Funny thing..it happens every Sunday since the start of the daylight saving time..dont know if the sensor is time sensitive. pls help!!!

How do you know it is the immobilizer and not an unrelated electrical short or open circuit?

thanks for your reply...nissan service verified no electrical problems//dj

You still haven't answered my question. Why do you suspect it is the engine immobilizer?

By the way, just because the dealer can not locate an electrical problem that does mean there is not a problem.

nj,
well, the immobilizer warning light has remained on while i was driving on two occasions and nissan tech advisor mentioned that it might be the immobilizer sensor. They told me to bring the car straight to them if it happens but unfortunately, it happens on sundays only when they are closed!!
Note that everytime the engine is immobilized, I realized it only takes to pop the hood and to close it back for the car system to reset. This is not the fix but it definitely saves me from getting stranded.
I hope some owner out there had encountered the same and found the fix//dj

I buy the immobilizer problem theory. Last week I helped a colleague of mine because he could not get his Lexus started. The car would die immediately after start. On a hunch I thought the immobilizer controller was somehow “hung”. We closed all windows and the locked and unlocked the car several times using the key, and then car started and has had no problems since.

There is no hood interlock switch so I do not understand how opening and closing the hood can reset the system and fix your problem. It also baffles me how it occurs every Sunday.

Could be his Murano joined a union and now has Sundays off!:2:

Somethinfg specific is probably happening every Saturday either before or after you park the MO. What...:D

I am having a hard time believing the MO is recognizing a specific day (Sunday) and is initiating a shutdown based on that day. I think something else is happening that is triggering the problem.

dj, do you (or someone else) use a different keyfob on Sunday?

Loose connector?

Sorry, this note is too late but better than never!!

I have discovered the root of the immobilizer problem myself and it was such a simple solution....my battery cable terminal was LOOSE.

NO thanks to the Nissan tech who topped my battery juice and failed to retighten the terminals.

Reminders to all ...when your immobilizers act funny, check the battery terminals!

Why were the terminals loose in the first place? Did you have the battery replaced?

nj,
No, the Nissan service tech just topped my battery liquid. I guess I have one of those batteries that need servicing. I was also surprised since I assumed all modern cars have the permanently sealed batteries.

Well.......yeah.
But I have topped off the Murano battery many times and have yet to take the cables off............I don't understand.......

Doesn't make one whit of sense.

For all who attempt to troubleshoot electrical circuits - always check the source first! Then the fuses, breakers....start from the beginning...

As you now know, the MO does not come with a maintenance-free battery. That's not a bad thing. Personally, I prefer a battery that I can easily check the water level.

Going back to your earlier post.... You really can't blame the Nissan tech for not checking the terminals when he was topping off the electrolyte. Battery terminals, once properly tightened, never come loose. It is a non-stressed connection between two non-moving parts.

If the loose terminal was the cause of your problem, I just wonder what caused it to loosen. Did the dealer ever replace a major component on your MO that required the battery to be disconnected?

nj,

None that I can recall. As I am not car tech savvy, this experience taught me a valuable lesson to check my batt terminals first if having ignition/electrical problems.

best regards,
dj
