I bought the filter from NAPA for less than $20 (tax in), $60 from dealer (can you imagine?).

There are 2 filters Nissan sells for the Murano. One is a plain filter, my dealer wants $30 for it. The other is activated charcoal, and the dealer wants $70 for it.
I suspect you were quoted for the charcoal filter at $60 and you bought the plain filter for $10. |

Thats correct Tyler - I was stunned by how much Courtesy was charging for the charcoal filter as well. I ended up buying two Purolator filters ($15 each vs $35 each for the stock non charcoal) from Kragen that fit the Murano instead. |

Kris,
The activated-charcoal filter will not filter out the allergens. You would need a HEPA filter for that. Activated-charcoal absorbs odors and vapors.

Not necessarily. If you regularly drove on roads adjacent to landfills, oil refineries, and factories, like the northern end of the New Jersey Turnpike, then the charcoal filter would absorb the odors from the air and make the ride a bit more plesant.

| Of course by breathing in the air from the charcoal filter you will grow a third nipple but at least the air will smell fresh. :p |

I have a friend who is a specialist in air filters. You can see his site at http://www.allerair.com/
What I understand is that like all Bionair filters and alikes, there is so little "active charcoal" in these that it is effective something like a day or two. To be really effective, it would need to pack a huge amount of charcoal, plus an efficient HEPA filter, and finally a UV light to kill germs. I got 2 of these at home and they are more they weight 75 pounds each and are the sze of a Shop-Vac.
IMHO, In the case of the MO, get the best (most dense) filter you can get to eliminate the smallest particles but, without a HEPA filter, you won't catch the microscopic ones anyway. |
