The Least Noisy, Most Comfortable (Soft-feeling) Tires? - Click HERE for Original Thread
Tarzan_MO
Hey everybody -

I HATE the stock GY Eagles. I am surprised at how loud they are in picking up road noise.
You know those little scratch marks the roadworkers leave when they sometimes move the white bumps in the line? Well those scratches are like the bumps on a record being scratched by a needle and plays a tune - don't you think?

In fact, speaking of road noise -
why is it that I can feel those scratchy, noise jiggles on the footpedals? THAT was a weird sensation for me the first few times, I can tell you! I'm used to it now, but when I felt the massaging vibrations come through the foot pedals I thought I was getting a foot massage! :p

Anyways, reading through the posts here concerning tires, I was wondering whether y'all have words of wisdom for me from your experiences now that a lot of you have tried various kinds.
I would be honored if y'all could describe what replacement tires you put on, how they feel, how they sound, how they handle, and what kind of driving conditions you mostly encounter. In particular, I am interested in how they feel to you on major roads in and out of the cities where you live.

I am in SoCal - among the spreading towns and freeways that don't go anywhere fast -
a lot of the freeways in and around the cities like L.A. and S.D. SUCK BIG DOODOO !!!! :3:
- they have so much traffic on them, they are all bumpy and grinding and are really uncomfortable to drive on. A lot of them are being constantly repaired but NEVER are repaired perfectly. If I go to the suburbs or further out or to nice parts of town, the roads are much smoother and feel nice to drive on. They actually are smooth! hehe

I'll never drive my Murano on snow, but I will take it out on well-paved dirt roads in the dessert to check out the scenery. Most of my driving is on city streets, and of course on the freeways to get across town.

So, what tires do you really recommend?

Thank ya ~ :4:

I have no complaints with the GY Eagles. I have no vibrations with the tires and the car tracks very true. Have you checked the air pressure in the tires? The pressure should be around 33-35 psi.

If you search the forums, you'll find that most have posted on alternative tires. There aren't a lot of direct-fit replacements, so you'll probably have to go to a larger size. Some of the popular alternatives are 255/60-18 and 265-60-18.

The stock Goodyear LS tires aren't great, but aren't horrible. You don't mention how many miles you have on yours, but all tires will get louder as they wear. I would recommend tires with more passenger-car like tread (as opposed to tires that have off-road style tread) to help minimize noise.

If the noise is bothersome, you can always apply Dynamat (or an equivalent) to the floorboards and doors. That will help to deaden any sound and keep things quieter in your MO.

BTW, I don't feel any vibration in my pedals from Bott's dots. You may want to have that checked out by the dealership...

I went again with the stock tires. I don't have any issues. I did have issues with a defect on a strut from the beginning and had my tires replaced by Nissan. No complaints with the GY stock LS.

I am on third set of GDY LS. Yes, they are not great tires but I do believe they provide a good compromise between handling, noise, comfort, ride, longevity, price. I tried Yokohama Geolandars and absolutely hated them! In my opinion no truck/suv type tire suits Murano. So I would advise look for passenger type tire. There are not many choices. Recently I saw a new tire from Yokohama - YK520. It seems like a decent tire. But I am yet to try it....

Just remember if GDY LS seem to you too hard , any truck/suv type tire will be even harder! GO for soft, passenger type tire...

If you do a search, you will find this subject discussed almost to death. If you fo to Tirerack.co, there are extensive reviews on a number of brands.

I switched to Michelin Crossterrains several months ago - which comes in the factory stock size - and find them to be quieter and better in inclement weather. They do look a bit more "SUV" like as they have a more aggressive i.e., serrated edge. All in all, I am very happy with them.

Funny, I am looking for tires too. Personnally, I think the GY site identifies this tire to the "T".

Ride & Quietness - 10
Dry/Wet/Snow Traction- 7

On the wear factor, I would give it a 6. I've had both GY's and Michelin's on my previous vehicle (S-10 Blazer). The GY in the Wangler GSA wore to about 70 - 80,000 miles and the Michelin to about 45k. The GY had much better traction as well.

Because of my experience with the wrangler, I actually expected more mileage from these GY. I only got around 45k.

If I don't plus size, I will probably get the GY's or try the Dunlop Grandtrex? They are on the Mercedes SUV and have a high mileage warranty.

ALL things balanced that is, price, confort, ride, noise, wet traction.

I have about 62k miles on my OEM tires and I don't necessarily think they are "loud". On some pavements they are actually so quiet I wonder if they are still riding the ground!

I plan to get GY again when wet season returns to CA, or finalize my move to NY (I will be driving the MO), whichever comes first...

I appreciate everybody pitching in -

but one thing I forgot to ask is WHERE you all are? In what city and state do you drive?

I think that, when people tell me how GREAT the ride is on these tires and suspension, people are driving on roads that are in pretty good shape and have pretty smooth pavements.

So the problem lies probably NOT in the tires, but in the roads around here.......

Sounds like these stock tires are what fits best. I probably have to break them in a little bit still. I've only got less than 1000 miles on the car!:2:
Kris
I have no idea how people are getting 45 - 60k miles out of the GDY? I am getting only 30 - 35k.

I am driving mostly in the Atlanta metro area though the Murano already seen place between Miami, Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, to New Mexico.....

alright well i'm from canada in the alberta praries and i ride on 2 sets of tires, the ones mentioned in my sig in the summer, and unfortunatly, the stock goodyears in the winter. i say unfortunatly because i find these tires absoultely horrible on snow even with AWD. they don't provide enough of a biting edge when turning and on dry roads are load and more harsh than my summer tires. but i'll have to live with them for a few more winters as there is no point in discarding a perfectly good set of tires(just over 10000km on them)

here are my suggestions for those who will never drive on snow:

Michelin Cross Terrains(235/65/18) they aren't overly aggressive and those people that i've talked to which have them on other suv's find them quite comfortable for a truck tire.

Avon Tech ST(255/60/18 or 265/60/18) somewhat the same treadpattern as the goodyears but from the member that has them on this forum, he says they are much better than the goodyears and are rated number 1 on tire rack for suv all seasons. plus you get a wider tread but the overall wheel diameter stays the same.

Bridgestone Dueler HP Sport(265/60/18) these are my summer tires so i am a bit biased towards them. they are a bit more pricey but i find that the handleing is much improved in the murano with these tires and they feel sooo much safer when driving through heavy rainfalls. forget about any snow traction. the added width gives the murano a sportier profile but some members have reported decreased fuel economy after putting these tires on

Kumho ECSTA STX(265/60/18) looks like a good tire for those that will never drive in the snow. tread seems geared towards performance but some members have reported issues with feathering on the inside edge of the tires.

Tarzan MO, I drive mostly highway - 90% (to/from work). However, I have never had a problem with the GY's on rough roads. I suggest that you check the tire pressure. If it is too high, you will notice the bumps. Mine is at around 35 psi.

I would have thought that the roads would be smooth in La la land? :D

Nissanlove, nice writeup. I like the reference of other members experiences. I would like to also see someones writeup on the Dunlop and Continental.

personally, i wouldn't go with the dunlops or continentals. the conti's are a tire that wears quite rapdily and it dosn't have all the traction it's hyped up to have. the dunlops are very much a truck type tire with a blocky tread pattern and again, not enough grip. they may look good on range rovers and such but not on the mo.

on the other hand, these dunlop sp5000 may be considerable. apparently they are considered a high performance all season tire but i wouldn't dare to use them on any snow but they do look like they have decent water chutes.

I just got my second set of LS's.
No complaints.

I also have my tires around 35 PSI.

Let me tell ya, the roads around here are bad. Not necessarily pot-holed bad, but with so many varying scars of tarmac/concrete overlapping each other and poor quality patch-work repairs, there are jagged bumps and recently-flattened bumps that are now bulldozer scrapes, I swear you think you're playing a musical instrument with your tires every time you drive over these things.
Of course, in all the smaller incorpoprated cities where the wealthy live, the roads are nice, without scars, and are very smooth and everybody's cars feel completely different.

The freeways are unforgivable. They do have a lot of traffic on them, but I think CalTrans are not getting the proper funding to repair the freeways. They recently figured out a way to scrape off an inch of the top surface of the white concrete roads and make then smooth, as if they've been sand-papered - and those areas are fairly decent, but there are loads of cracks and scars that they repair with tarmac (!!) and they end up being little bumps once the heat hits them up real good.

OK I think I've bitc_ed enough about the roads around here! Yes, I've got road rage! hahahahaha:2:

The sp5000 is rated no. 1 my consumer reports, for what that is worth.

That tire's treads look remarkably similar to the OEM GY Eagle LS, huh?

So - when comparing tires, how reliable do you think this chart is?:

What y'all thunk?
To our experts out there - which of these tires fit the Muranos????

I think the trick is to drive so fast that the MO flys over the road rather than on it. Less friction, less tire wear....:D

Seriously, I had less tire wear when I was driving 85 mph during my commute than now. I seldom break the speed limit now (and no , it has nothing to do with the speeding ticket I got last year! Just that I am a bit older, wiser and care about the safety of others more) and my tires seem to wear faster!

I think I can probably get another 3k miles, a total of 65k miles overall, out of these tires but then they will need to be replaced for sure.

Not very reliable. After my experience I do not trust TireRack reviews, or rather surveys....
