Grinding noise when coasting - Click HERE for Original Thread
Maclaren
Hey all, I just purchased a 2004 SE. I've had it for about a week, and have started to notice a small grinding noise from the front/left when the vehicle is coasting.

It only happens when I step off the gas and/or brake. There is no noise when accelerating.

Some days I'll hear it, some days I won't. Any ideas what could be causing this?

First thought was brake wear indicator but only when coasting kind of threw me. Is your mother-in-law in the car with you at the time? Because it could be her. "DOHHHHH"

Maclaren-

I would bet my money on a bad wheel bearing or a worn CV joint.

How many miles on your MO? Did you purchase it from a private party or a dealer? If it was the latter I would bring it back and and ask that it be repaired since you only bought it a week ago.

I'd check the front brakes.

Could be a bad caliper which you won't hear under acceleration and while braking.

Any warranty left on the car?

Thanks for the tips... It was purchased from a dealer, and yes I will put in a call to them.

Wheel bearing is my guess, you can check it easily by jacking up the side that you hear the noise and pull on the top and bottom of the tire. If there is any play, then the bearing is going out. Bad CV joint will click when turning...

I'm betting on the brakes.

Sounds exactly like what was happening to mine shortly after I got it. Turned out to be a loose, left-front brake pad which the dealer took care of by relplacing all the front pads. Only under a forced load (acceleration) and at very slow coasting/braking speeds was I able to hear it.

Hope it's something that simple...

Ahh... thanks I'm finally having it looked at this week, I hope it's just that, too... I'll mention that to them, too...

cheers

My money is on wheel bearing......early onset of bearing failure...

Read my story on another treat related to that particular issue...
