Tranny Failure - Click HERE for Original Thread
DMurano
My Murano has been a joy, until this week. I was driving on the interstate and the RPMs abruptly went up and the car slowed, basically as I indicated losing power. I pulled over, shut the vehicle off and the it was fine after I restarted, however, the "service engine soon" light was on. Short story are the codes indicated the CVT needed replacing per the dealer. I think the indication was a valve failure and Nissan suggested replacement rather than replacing the valve. It is a 2003 Murano with 90K hiway miles. My question is does this sound correct? Replacement of the CVT versus replacement of the valve (CVT replacement approx $58K versus $11k for the valve) Two dealers I have spoken to have never had a CVT fail.

Thanks for any feedback.

The CVT is the weak Link and Jasco propable pay the tab onall replacement so Nissan screws the supplier.

Is your Mo a AWD?
DMurano
You are probably right. Just a FWD.

Thanks for the response.

DMurano-

I am confused. Why do you state "CVT replacement approx $58K versus $11k for the valve"? Are you talking US dollars or pesos?

Is you MO under any kind of extended warranty? If so, I would opt for a new/rebuilt tranny. If not, then a new valve body would be the most economical way to go.

Also surprised it's a FWD That is rare. AWD put more load on the trranny and of course they have a transfer case. If you are paying Joe is right.

Are we actually talking about thousands of dollars and not hundreds of dollars????

If the higher price is correct, you could get a whole new car for less than than.

I assume the numbers were supposed to be $5.8k and $1.1k.

A tranny should not fail such that it requires replacement. Unacceptable, A cluthch wearing out OK, But the whole tranny failing, not acceptable. Nissan better get this fixed or the Whole CVT thing is going to go a way, I have a 6 speed auto and checked with the factory rep in Auburn Hills they have not have ONE failure yet. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And how many people out ther have (or can afford) a beauty like that 6 speed of yours?

Ok missed the "." yes 5.8k and 1.1k that got beat to death.... I was wondering if it is common to replace the valves. The dealer indicated it was not, he indicated the CVT is almost always replaced. They stated in most cases when you replace the valve it usually fails again pretty soon. Sound like this is not the case. Yes I am paying, so I will be going with the cheaper route.

The dealer is probably right, that 99% of all CVT problems were addressed with a complete swap. The most-likely reason for that was because the CVT's manufacturer, JATCO, wanted to tear-down the failed units. Your dealer is trying to avoid the valve body replacement for two reasons - 1) he'll make more $$ if he can install a new CVT, and 2) his mechanics have probably never done a valve body replacement.

If you know what the code was, you might want to check to see if it falls under the "Valve Body TSB" for the Murano that you can look up on

www.nissanhelp.com

I'd considering replacing the valve body only if your conditions match the TSB.
GripperDon
Really needs to be researched, You have never said the dealer is paying so it your dough at that price differrence I would replace the valve and trade the car.
Lightninrod
Keep in mind that a failed valve body may caused metal 'bits' to invade the tran's fluid cooler and then, invade the CVT itself...

If you have them replace the valve body, be sure to insist that the cooler and lines all be flushed until free of debri. For that price, I would hope flushing the system has already been figured in...

I wholeheartedly agree, but do you really believe you would find that saying on a poster anywhere near a Nissan garage? Certainly not the one I use, nor the one that forgot to add oil during an oil change on 3.5V6's MO, nor the one... .
