Leather vs. Cloth ? - Click HERE for Original Thread

We're still looking for the right Murano for us but hopefully getting close to making a purchase. I've been looking at 2006 models and I previously asked on here about the cloth not having a power passenger seat.

I'd appreciate it if those of you that have Muranos could tell me how the leather holds up. I had a bad experience with leather seats in a Durango so I guess that has made me avoid them. They wore down so much more quickly than cloth, the support wasn't as good and then there was the cracking problem that made them look old pretty quickly. Most importantly though, they squished down and it felt like you were sitting on the plastic power controls instead of being held by the cushioned seat. We haven't had that problem in our vehicles with cloth seats but maybe the Murano is different ?
My husband is a big, tall guy. I also take my mother out fairly often and she tends to slide off car seats to get out and I was wondering if that would wear the leather out fast or does it hold up well? Does it scratch easily, dog friendly? Pros, Cons?

Any input would be appreciated! So many decisions to make!
Thank-you in advance. :-)

I wouldn't compare the leather in a Durango to that of the Murano ;).

Anyway, I haven't heard complaints from anyone regarding the leather for all the years that the Murano has been out, and Nissan isn't known for bad leather either. I'm almost 100% positive that you can get the upgraded power seating without the touring/premium/leather packages. According to Nissan's website, it's standard on the SL and SE.

However, you don't get the memory system, passenger power seating, entry/exit system, or heated seats.

IMO it's worth the money to get leather.

We have had our Mo for almost a year now and it has 12k miles on it. There is absolutely no wear showing (which there shouldn't be) but you should have nothing close to the experience you had if experience in our last few Nissan products is any clue as to the leather quality.

I have detailed cars for quite a long time and it's been my experience that German Leather > Asian Leather > American Leather. At the risk of irritating some of the Big 3 drivers most of the interiors in general and the leather in particular in GM/Ford/Chrysler has left a LOT to be desired for a long time.

Keep in mind that leather interiors reflect how they were maintained a lot of times.

Not as good as Mercedes but very goot, I had Black.

I just got the 07' with leather, and I LOVE IT, really soft but with 2 dogs, holds up against their CLAWS haha
I was told not to condition the leather too much because it wears it thin, don't know how true this is but just food for thought =)
Best of luck!

Where did you hear this?

Don't clean your leather with harsh chemicals or detergents, use a good quality leather cleaner & leather conditioner and you can't go wrong. I have conditioned leather in my cars every other time I cleaned them (or about every other week) for many years. There are much harder cored people than myself when it comes to detailing but I try to keep a balance to my anal-retentiveness :D

There are also much more critical people where leather (and audio) is concerned but lets face it this is a $35ką car, not a $50k+ one.

My brother-in-law told me that his friend told him, like I said I didn't know how true it was..... =)

I can't speak for durability of the MO's leather, but just traded a Max for my MO, and had no problems with the Max's leather in over 3 1/2 years.

Those have been my only 2 vehicles with leather, and I do love it. My only issue with leather is that when it's hot, even with the A/C cranked, my back gets sweaty. :(

I have had mine for almost three years now. I conditioned it once, and that was sort of partial too nevause I got tired and went back inside!. No dogs but since I have 62k miles on it I would say at least the driver's seat has been used a lot. I also slide off the seat and except for a little crinkling, which I understand is common in Muranos, I have not noticed any wear.

I have a 96 Maxima with leather and 190,000 miles. No tears and no marks . I recondition once a year.

Thanks for your replies!
I feel better about the durability of leather now. Still just concerned with it being hot though because we live in the South and the heat is a problem the majority of the year. Just can't help but think that cloth would be cooler but maybe it's just an old mindset!
Thanks again. :)

I was a firm believer in cloth for many years since you stick to it to it and I have a bad habit of umm....spirited driving :). My first car w/ leather seating came to me about 6 years ago and I fell in love with the feel of it. It's NOTHING like the vinyl seating that some of us grew up with and maybe what kept me from wanting it sooner. Part of the draw is possibly a perceived luxury, many pros and cons have been discussed above.

I've lived in the deep south all my life and I can honestly say that aside from that first few seconds on a black seat that has been left in the sun (our other car is a Z roadster w/ black leather) being hot in general isn't really an issue.

I have the feeling that in the hottest parts of our summers until the A/C unit gets the car to where you want it you are going to sweat a little no matter what the seating surface (I know I do). Cloth seats may soak this up somewhat better than leather but that has it's own drawbacks. In the end you have to get what feels good to you, you will spend quite a few miles in this vehicle.

ya know, i think that the rest of the vehicle can play into the heat thing as well....i'll compare the vehicle that we just traded in for the MO.

First is an 03 Mazda 6s w\ black leather, sunroof, and clear windows (no tint)....BEASTLY hot in the dead of summer.

This weekend we were shopping for a MO. It was partly sunny, and generally a plesant day. We parked the Mazda and sauntered around the lot for probably 30 min before we got the keys to check out the MO. This vehicle also had black leather, a sunroof, but was very darkly tinted. It was about 12:30 or so...so mid day sun. When we got in the MO it was actually quite nice, even though it had been sitting outside all day, all closed up! I went back to the mazda to see how it was after 30 min, and it was already like a little sauna! Not as bad as it could be, but shoot....too hot after only 30 minutes!

So we finally decided that the window tinting on the MO must really help keep the overall temp down, and helps keep the sun off the seats, so therefore the temp of the seats themselves will be lower too.....just guesses, but it seems to make sense. :D

So I guess I'm saying (the long way around, of course) is that, as a previous leather fearer(is that a word??) like you.....we decided to get this MO with the black leather because of the experience that we had this past weekend. That and this mo was just too sweet to pass up! :D

edit: oh yeah....i forgot...the quality of the Nissan leather versus the Mazda's leather (im guessing its from Ford anyway) is night and day! The MO's leather feld so much more luxurious and soft as compared to the Mazda....

The hyjacking of everyones post like the word "Vehichle" use in the previouse post taking you to that dumb site? I hate it and them.
Nathan @ NBO
Do any cars come with fans in the seats these days, because I really dislike leather only because my back gets so sweaty.
GripperDon
Has air cooled seats and the air is refrigerated.

Leather problem

(sorry hawk1 to use your picture - thanks)

anyone know how to treat it. Thank you

Sit down on that spot, it will stretch it back out and you won't see it ;)

(It's not a defect, it's a common occurance, sadly the best advice is get over it)

LEATHER. The tough choice is all the options in colors. I just can't decide. Let's see, black or tan???????

Which brings to mind, is the whole seat leather, or just the seating and back areas?? A lot of leather furniture is only leather on the seat and some hybred material on the sides, back, and front. Does anyone know for SURE???

That is true for the MO seats as well....
