Buying a used Mo - Click HERE for Original Thread
staedlerserg
Hi all

I've been lurking this forum for a few months, on and off. Alot of interesting facts, threads, interesting people with the occasional goofball :) Everyone I know that owns a Mo only have great things to say about this car. Most people here seem proud of their vehicle as well.

I'm currently shopping around for a used Murano. I'd like to spend between $25k and $30k on a 2004 or 2005 SE. One of the Muranos I'm looking at is a 2005 SE with 80,000 kms going for about $27k CND.

What usually breaks down on these vehicles at around that mileage?

And should i be concerned with a 2 year old car with that much mileage on it?

My wife, who knows nothing about cars, says it's better to find an older model with less mileage. I disagree, but need input from the experts on this forum :)

What breaks down at 80,000 kms? Not much. In fact, there is nothing that breaks down with any frequency. The later-model MOs are turning out to be pretty reliable cars. The earlier models had trouble with the alternators failing but that was addressed with a redesign and a recall in early 2005.

A two year-old car with 80,000km (50,000 miles) equates to 40,000km (25,000 miles) per year. There are two ways to look at this. The car was used as a taxi or delivery vehicle (unlikely) or was a highway commuter's car. Highway miles are a lot easier on the car as compared to stop-and-go urban driving. And since the MO is such a low-revving car at highway speeds the engine is still in the early stages of it's lifespan.

Why your preference for the SE?

Good luck.

I check my dealers website for the year of Mo you are looking for and found the following:

2004 SE 65700 Km $32K
2004 SL 54000 KM $30K

The best part is no rust, I have had my 03 SL for 3 years and have no issues ( current odometer reads 103500KM) unless you want the nav system, leather seats, HID lights and stiffer suspension, a SL model may work for you.

here is what my dealer got in house....

2004 NISSAN MURANO SE
142020 KM
$ 24921

2005 NISSAN MURANO SL
90806 KM
$ 27868

personally speaking, if there are gonna be 2 full time drivers for the MO, i will suggest SE, the best feature is the memory seating. plus standard VDC (i guess its std on SL as well.... comments anyone) i got my MO used in 2004 with 20,000km and now got 61,000... only issue i had was the alternator but it was covered and MO runs like a beauty now..... no major issues so far.... would be replacing tires (expensive solution... ~ 820$ at costco)

good luck with your search... if you can, i will suggest getting it from AB, SK or BC as no salt is poured here.... so cars stay cleaner......

At least for 2005 and older, VDC and Memory seats are NOT standard for the either model. For both cases, you must upgrade to the leather seats before you can have VDC or memory seats.

As far as "standard" stuff, there are only three differences between the SE and SL (again, for 2005 and older):
1) SE has sport-tuned suspension (corners better, harsher ride)
2) SE has tip-tronic style shift which lets you put it in 6 different "gears"
3) SE has HID headlights (I think that was standard, or it might have come with one of the lower level packages that SL didn't offer. To get HID on SL, you pretty much had to have the car loaded.)

I believe the Canadian MO's are differently spec'd than the US MO's. In the US, SL and SE were equivalently ranked through 2005 model year, and it was not until 2006+ that SE became top of the line (although you can still equip an SL to be almost SE spec save the suspension and manual shift gate).

In Canada, I think SE has always been top of the line with more standard options.
staedlerserg
There will only be 1 full time driver, me. The wife will take it for an occasional spin.

Eric L. is right, must be a Canadian model thing. I always knew the SE model to be the fully loaded (sun roof, leather, etc). SL comes well equipped but after 9 years in an Acura Integra RS, it's time to spoil myself with comfort and options!

Looks like the 2005 80k KM SE is sold already, but just not to me! :\

How's the gas consumption on the Mo? I'm doing about 350km on a full tank right now with my Integra, which is costing me about $40 per week right now. Can I expect to pay double that for the Mo?

What parts (aside from the CVT) are expensive to replace?
How much do disc brakes go for?
How much for an oil change?

And what options are a MUST on this car? I hear the winter rubber carpets are great, and not too pricey.

And what options are really unnecessary?

Thanks for the info everyone

I would have to have a 2005 or later an Sl and FWD with leather. This is all my tastes not necessaryly ures. I feel the 05 got most of the bugs out.

Doh! My apologies. I didn't think about those differences... You know, typical American. Only things that matter to me are things that directly affect only me... :D

yes, SE is top of the line with everything included minus NAV.....

as far as gas mileage is concerned, i get about 475km on a tank with the cost varying all the time.... i use Shell's premium 91 and the latest fillup was at 1.31$/L which costed about 85$ so you can take an idea.....

for winter mats, i got the Michelin ones from Canadian tire for 1/2 price....and i have a plastic (the one used for covering stairs ) rolled all over the mo's sitting area.... so i dont get the melted ice under the mats and onto the carpet surface of MO

you can easily slide under MO without lifting it.... so oil replacement is a piece of cake.... consider getting a Fumoto Valve for easy oil change. search this forum for that and you will find lots of happy users. access to oil filter is also very easy. most people are using synthetic oil and some are changing oil at regular intervals with regular oil. so its upto you.

i will suggest getting a rear bumper protector (standard on 2006 + models),

hope it helps !!

Fuel economy varies for the MO. If you do all city driving, figure between 15-17 miles per US gallon. If you do highway, figure 20-22 miles per US gallon (you can convert to km or imp gallons on your own).

CVT? Currently there are no servicable parts for it - thats the caveat of a brand new transmission. Recently there has been a Nissan internal procedure to replace a part called the valve body, but thats it - if anything else breaks, they need to replace the entire transmission and thats pretty expensive. That said, the CVT has been very reliable and only a small percentage (no more than a standard automatic) have required major service/replacement from the surveys on this forum. The CVT is so well engineered, in fact, that no one here really knows the change interval for the special transmission fluid - you can do a search on that topic and read about the mysterious number that the computer uses to supposedly track fluid wear and condition.

Brakes? Its disc brakes all around, so figure about the same cost as it would be to service an Altima or Maxima, which share similar brake components. I'd say at most $300-400 for full pad replacement all around and turning of the rotors. The stock pads seem to last a long time, but as a function of the electronic brake force distribution, the rears might wear out more quickly than the fronts (which is the reverse of what normally happens).

Oil change? Most VQ equipped Nissans use the same oil filter (and oil), so its not any more expensive than a normal car. ~4.5qts of 5w30 and a Nissan OEM filter. I purchase the filters separately ($5 each, cheap!) and use Mobil One 5w30 myself. Obviously synthetic is not required, but I'm one of the overmaintenance nuts that njjoe keeps complaining about. :D :D

I bought a used 2005 SE in January for $30,000 with 60,000km, Nav and a replaced driver's seat gear/mechanism from an Acura dealer in Toronto. I feel I got an exceptional deal - confirmed by someone I had out shopping me a car at auction - and was about $5k below market. It had been traded in on an MDX and as nice as it was, they really didn't want a Nissan showing up their cars. ;) I am now near 70k and loving it. If you can buy from an off brand dealer, you can often do better.

I would strongly recommend the SE because of the "little things" - the gated shifter, leather interior, memory seats, HID lights, intelligent key, VDC and AWD are all standard on a Canadian spec 2005. The uplift cost for a used SE over an SL is much less than the new.

Watch out for the driver's seat though - if it is set-up to automatically move back when the ignition is switched off, it wears faster and when the gear goes, you need a whole new mechanism (nearly $1000!). This is a user programmable function so can be turned off - which I did.

In regards to fuel economy, it depends on how you drive. I heavy foot will decrease your fuel economy, however if you drive with a light foot the fuel consumption will be adequate.

I fall in the latter category where city driving averages 11-13 lts/100Km, that is with stop and go traffic. Highway driving at 100 Kmh give me 9.0lts/100km on a consistent basis. I drive out to the west coast 2-3 times a year and I can go from Calgary to Kamloops on 2/3 a tank. The trick seems to be to keep the RPM below 2000, at 100Kmh I do 1700 RPM.

I would go for the rubber mats, but check out Costco to as they sell Michelin mats.

I'm the proud owner of a 2006 S FWD. Price was certainly a concern for me, that's why I opted for the "S". I picked up a used 2006 with only 6000 miles on it for $22000. I added after market leather, upgraded the speakers, installed the iPod interface, installed parrot handsfree bluetooth and bought the all weather mats. The extras cost only $1700 by doing it aftermarket and I'm very pleased with everything.

I did have to pay $158 to fly to Daytona to get it though since about every used MO in my area was AWD and also a program/rental car. I did have a nice drive back and was able to test how smooth it was on the highway. I took it up to 105 mph and it felt like 70.

How much of that $1700 was the leather interior?
Pens66
Here is the cost breakdown:

Leather - $1050 (from private installer)
Speakers - $130 (from circuit city, leather installer installed these for free)
Parrot Bluetooth kit - $90 + $60 installation + $50 for wiring harness (bought off of ebay)
Ipod Adapter - $225 (from Nissan dealer)
All weather mats - $80 (from Nissan dealer)

Total $1685. The leather is really high quality. There are kits of it on ebay for around $600 if you feel you can do it yourself. I do wish I had the Bose stereo so that I could use the mp3 capability of the 6 cd changer. I am still on the lookout for one on junkyards. Other than that and not having the stability control, I am pretty happy with my "S".

Money well spent; looks like you have a really sweet set up! Would be nice to see pictures. :)

Here it is!

2005 SE Black on Black.
55,000 kms

Really cute car, nice growl, super spacious, gets dirty really fast! I like it alot, but I can't call this love just yet :P, too many payments

Thanks to everyone who posted here with their comments and opinions.

In Canada, the SE is available in AWD only and receives everything but NAV as standard equipment.

The SL is available in FWD & AWD and has the sunroof as sole option on both drivetrains. Our SL has the premium package + heated front seats & mirrors and nothing else is available, no leather, no VDC, etc...

As of 2007, the S model is still not available through Nissan Canada.

Nissan Canada decided that the Canadian buyer who desire leather and VDC will prefer the SE and thebuyer who prefers a softer ride will not need VDC... Go figure!?!?
SIM
staedlerserg, we're really close! It looks more like a suburb around your MO and not the usual Montreal landscape but I could not read the city name on the blue garbage :p

I am in Mascouche, just north-east of Montreal, near Laval & Terrebonne.

Hey neighbor!

I'm in Lachenaie SIM. Very close indeed!

Now that you know where I live, please don't steal my car!!!
SIM
In fact yours look a lot similar to my 2004 that was stolen in front of my door last December... To make sure that you are not driving mine, simply scratch the top of your hood to make sur that no silver paint appear under your nail. You can also use an exacto... :2:

Thanks for the TireRack link!

Going to start searching for a winter tire that fits this car (my dealer says $180 per tire is the best price I'll be able to find - we'll see about that!)

SIM, tell me about this OEM Nissan iPod interface? How much does it cost and what does it look like?

I bought a gizmo from Future Shop but it works with radio tuning, total crap.

PS: SIM, no silver under the hood lol! But I did notice the driver side panel was repainted though. :(
