Just changed air filters in both the Murano and FX after approximately 12 months and 20k miles. I was stuned what I saw! But see for yourselves.
From left to right - Murano, FX.
I replaced the OEM filters with FRAM. I will see how they perform. |

| Ok what am I missing... stunned at what? That they both use the same filter or that you should replace the Infinity's filter more often. :p |

Same question here, but I was afraid to be the first one to ask...:2: |

OK you "smarties'
1. they are really dirty but I guess this is good thing as all this crap did not end up in the engine...
2. why t...h....the FX one is so much dirtier?.. |

The CVT makes the VQ a slow-revving engine (when left in "D"). The MO ingests less air per mile than the FX, so the MO's filter is cleaner.

nj, that's a good explanation.
My other thought is that the FX may suck air into the engine at a lower induction point than the Mo - resulting in dirtier air. |

No, it does not. I think Joe's explanation is resonable. Also what makes the difference is where the cars are driven, though in this case I would say it should not matter as both cars are driven in similar environment.
Anyway, filters did their job. It looks like changing them more often would not hurt. Especially given the price of the filters... |

One other thought Kris - driving habits.
If the FX driver tends to tailgate the car in front of them versus the Mo driver, then there may be a situation were more dirtier air is present. Epecially, if they tailgate behind big rigs and construction trucks.
If that's not the case, I really don't want to mention my other theory of an affair with a construction worker.

OTR Trucks and Construction vehicles typically vent upwards....so that one wouldn't work....but it seems like city and school busses exhaust down, don't they? Same with RV's? maybe??? oh heck, i dunno...just babbeling.... :D :1: |

scolba,
I'm not referring to the exhaust, I'm referring to the dirt and dust they kick up as a result of there size/wind drag. :4:

What are the prices for the Fram and OEM filters ?
Were you able to replace the filter just by opening the filter box or did you remove or loosen some of the wiring or the intake tube?
When I tried to open the filter lid it seemed I would be forcing it because of everthing connected to it. |

| I had to cut a cable tie holding a bracket on. Kind of rediculous considering there was another one 6 inches down the way. It would have been impossible otherwise. |

I did not cut anything. I loosened up the hose clamp and pulled the box out. Same with FX.
Price - I just do not remembr.....but it was cheap. I think about $10 for FRAM. |

That was on the post I did back in 04 when I was asking about it.
Notice how the harness is tie wraped to the firewall and the bracket leaving zero wiggle room. I thought it was stupid to tie wrap it to the firewall as the gave a more severe bending moment, and a much more shakey one. I clipped it off and now the lid comes off easy with no tools.

Is your engine still that clean? |

This is what I do - I loosen up the hose clamp marked with arrow on the photo. Then pull the filter box to the right and up. And that's it!
Mr. Z - look at the engine bay......it is not that dirty, is it? ;) Even after 75k miles.... |
