Hey guys,
I have tried to search for the answers for these questions, but haven't had much luck.....so here goes...
when searching tirerack.com based on the MO, it only shows 4 tires available. Now when i search for tires by size 235/65/r18, it shows 2 more tires are available....why is that??
Additionally, i see that you guys are running different sizes....how have those sizes effected performance/fuel consumption, etc.? if you go to a different size tire, is there a new speedo gear for the new size or anything? whats the most common replacement tire that you guys use (other than the goodyears)??
Also, have any of you guys run coopers? I am kind of partial to those....have used them on my pickup for quite some time...I would like to put on those or Bridgestone's if possible...
Thanks as always for the input!!
Scott
P.S. We finally found a MO, negotiated a price and are picking it up tomorrow! WOOT! |

Scott-
Congrats on your soon-to-be new MO.
OK, now let me take a stab at the tire questions...
The reason TireRack only lists four tire choices for the MO yet six choices when looking by size is because their search algorithm uses faulty logic. ;) I really don't know. But any of the six tires would fit the MO.
Choosing a different size tire can affect your speedometer/odometer; the variance depends on how radical the size change is. And no, there is no "new speedo gear" to compensate. Actually, there is no gear at all. The speed/distance is calculated electronically from a sensor. Here is a link to a tire size calculator that that will show the speed/distance variations: Miata.net Check it out, it is pretty slick.
Check the tire section and you can see numerous reviews on the tire options available for the MO.
Enjoy the ride.

ok, cool....so pretty much any tire available in the sizes are going to meet load range, and all that jazz? that was the main thing i was worried about....
We're looking at 255/60R18.....so thats pretty dern close to the overall height. Close enough for me, anyway.
Electric speedometer calcs, eh? does not compute. :) I only asked about the gear because i had 36" tires on my old explorer and was able to change the gear in the transfer case to compensate....
i don't suppose anybody makes a programmer or anything to compensate if one does end up going to a larger or smaller tire size?
thanks again njjoe!! :D |

You have nothing to worry about. The 255/60 skins will alter your reading by 0.106%. When your speedometer reads 60 mph you will actually be traveling 60.09 mph. That is probably within the error range of the speedometer accuracy. Definitely nothing to worry about. Not unless you try to shoehorn 36-inchers on the MO. :p

| Check the speed rating on the additional 2 tires that pop up. If you search for tires by vehicle, it will use the manufacture's recommendations - speed rating included. The additional 2 tires do not meet Nissan's recommendations for spped. Keep in mind that the speed rating is not just speed ... it affects cornering (roll) and braking. |

Coolness...whats your overall impression of those tires? they look pretty nice....have you had them in the rain and snow at all?

Yup, that was the difference...the other two tires were S rated. Good call!!

Heh heh heh.....just for grins...i tried looking for a suspension lift for the MO...no such luck. :) and since its a unibody, then no body lift either.....too bad...36" swampers would have looked TOUGH! :D hmmm....i wonder if anybody makes a flared fender for these for a larger fitment. :2: |

I'm running 255/60-18 Avon ST on my MO. Very stable and long lasting, but after 10K miles on them, they're starting to get a little noisy on certain road types (concrete is the worst.) But in light snow conditions, they work perfectly and, IMO, much better than the original Goodyear Eagle LS.

| Excellent in rain and snow! I'm in central Maine, lots of nasty weather. Would not buy the rims though, some corrosion this winter. They are much more quiet than the Goodyears also. I feel the size gives a little more zip on take-off and grip the corners much better. |
